You will get many answers here. I leave mine in the oven.
It takes a while for the stone to heat.
I use pans to bake and finish Baking on the stone if the bottom isn't browned.
Sometimes you can't rotate everything in the oven, so that it bakes evenly.
Example:
I use the top shelf to brown the top of the Bread, because it is hotter.

You can do a Search of this at the bottom of Messages.
just put in Baking Stones.

Thanks Lou, but do you keep your stone in the oven even when your aren't using it to bake bread, but using the oven to cook something else?

I used to leave mine in all the time. But recently two different friends mentioned they'd noticed that it took their ovens a lot longer to heat up to the desired temperature with the stone in. I did a preheat test and found the same, so now I take it out when I'm not specifically using it. One more way to save a little energy.

I store mine in the oven, and take it out if I'm using the oven for something other than bread/pizza.

I seem to bake several things at one time frequently and find the round stone gets in the way so I don't keep mine in the oven. It's hard to move the racks around without taking it out too.
I always put it in when I'm cleaning the oven though. Comes out like new.

I leave mine in the oven all the time, never take it out. I don't find any trouble with uneven temperatures when cooking other things. Mine is an electric oven.

Like Sharon, I leave mine in the oven and never take it. Mines a big rectangle. I hadn't noticed that the oven takes longer to heat up, but even if that is the case, the upside to that is that once the stone is heated it actually helps maintain the heat in the oven. So when you open the oven door to check on something, or to baste, or to turn a cookie sheet around the temperature doesn't drop.

I leave it in during the cleaning cycle too.

I store mine in the cupboard and treat it like any other baking pan. Just pull out when needed.

Seems to be a fifty fifty spit to leave in or take out, so I guess I will continue to leave it in, as it makes storage so much easier.

Ann I noticed on the other pizza stone thread, that you said you put pans and casserole dishes directly on the stone when you need to bake or cook something. Does the bottom of what your cooking cook faster or burn? Do you keep your temp the same?

Shelley, the stone just heats up to whatever temp the oven is set for. So if you are making something like a potato gratin or a lasagna, just set the oven for what you would normally bake at.

Lou, I have used the stone I have in both gas ovens and electric ovens without any problems with burning. I'm currently cooking on a old GE that is probably 23 years old and so far so good. No problem with burning. And I keep the stone on the lowest shelf rack.
