YAY... I have a Food Processor!

Many thanks to Linda (aka: momof2doxies) for taking pity on me after my embarrassing incident where I ruined my FP work bowl.

I returned home from work today to find a large box waiting for me. This is what was in it!

Linda said this has been collecting dust in her pantry and she had been hoping to find a good home for it. I can assure you it will not collect any dust here! It is a 9 cup which is larger than what I had, and look at all the fun blades and discs! That little white blade is a dough blade! Can you imagine the fun I will have with that?

Linda, it was great talking to you on the phone this evening. I thank you so much for this beautiful and generous gift. I am always astounded by the generosity of the members of this forum, and this is just one more example of the true friendship and integrity of this group.

Thanks again! Oh...and I promise not to put this one in the nuker! LOL

What a wonderful gift. I couldn't agree more about the friendship and caring that our members show to each other. You're right Peppi, it seems especially nice because it is from one Linda to another.

Here is my recipe for Tex-Mex bean dip: 1-1/3 cup dried pinto (or red) beans (about 2 cups cooked) 1/2 large onion, coarsely chopped 2 tbsp cumin 1 bunch of cilantro, large stems removed, about 2/3 cup chopped 1 can Ro-Tel tomatoes (10 oz.) or similar tomatoes, diced with green chilies, drained, liquid reserved 2-3 Serrano chilies, coarsely chopped 6 tbsp chopped fresh oregano (or 2 tbsp dried oregano) 1 tbsp soup base - vegetable or beef (or 1-1/2 tsp salt, or to taste) Cook the beans by your preferred method (I use a pressure cooker now) until done, and discard the cooking water. Place all of the ingredients except the beans in a food processor and process until smooth. Add the beans, and process until pureed. I remove some of the seeds from the chilies and save them, in case it comes out too bland. You can remove more seeds, if you like it mild. Serve warm or cold with tortilla chips. This is a staple at my house, and is similar to beans that are a staple in Mexico and are used as a condiment every day. I use them for making burritos, tortas, migas, chalupas, tostados, quesadillas, taco salad, etc. Sometimes I serve them, heated, as a side dish for enchiladas or tamales. If you do not have my hummus recipe, I can post that as well. When I started making hummus, I learned that I liked it much better Greek style without cumin and so I leave that out when I make hummus but use it in bean dip. I think the Greeks use hummus the way Mexican use bean dip. You definitely need a FP for these dishes. Lars

Someone posted a tip about putting plastic wrap between the bowl and the top of the processor so that the top doesn't get dirty. This works for most of my applications (at least for when I just purÃ©e, and I'm very grateful for it. I have neither Cuisinart nor Kitchenaid because when I bought mine I was on a very strict budget. I'd like to replace the cheaper one I bought, but I don't use it enough to justify it, especially since I now have less time for cooking anyway. I've gone back to using a mandolin for a lot of things I might use a food processor for, and my FP works fine for purÃ©eing. I use my KA mixer for doughs. Lars

san, as you know, Elery bought me a big Kitchen Aid food processor for my birthday a couple of months ago. Have I been convinced that it's worth the counter space? Not entirely. I did use it to chop the onions and peppers for those 36 pints of salsa I canned, but no matter how I try, they are still a little too fine or a bit too big, it just doesn't do it the way I want them. It's passable, acceptable, but not exactly how I want it and so I'll go back to chopping it all by hand. I don't use it for bread because I have a bread machine that I love and use several times a week. Studies have been done showing that neither stand mixers nor food processors knead bread as well as the bread machines which were designed to do just that. Of course, you and I both know that you aren't baking a bunch of bread, LOL. I made pie crust but it got too hot and I had to put it in the freezer to chill before I could use it. Not much time savings there, although I suppose with a LOT more practice I might make it passable. So, bread making, pastry and vegetable chopping? Not ideal for any of those, at least not for me. What does it do? It makes spectacular and short work of a batch of hummus, which I love. It's better for Jessica's lime chipotle marinade/glaze, the cilantro tends to gum up the stick blender and the regular blender doesn't make enough. It made short work of the dough for the Cheddar Thumbprints with Habanero Jelly, because that dough needs to be frozen anyway, no matter how it's blended. Finally, I've used it to shred cabbage for slaw and it works great, much faster than a hand grater. It makes a smooth liver pate. Oh, and I ground up a bunch of dried hot chili peppers into bits, small enough to put into a shaker. It was so easy with the food processor. So, bottom line, I think you need to decide what you really use it for and whether another appliance would do the same job. Then decide. I like mine and I appreciate the fact that Elery thought enough to get me one but I still wouldn't buy one myself if it broke. Annie

I Was aware that kitchen aide was now made by whirlpool, and that my old kitchenaide food processer was actually made by kitchenaide. Someone ask the question WHY I did not go with kitchenaide in the first place since I was familiar with the kitchenaide and that was one of the reasons why...also like I said before, I was looking at a cooking show on t.v. and they were using cruisinart. That is why I thought I would like a cruisinart instead of a kitchenaide. Then I had second thoughts, as I had told my SIL that I had bought a cruisinart, and she told me she had, had more problems with her cruisinart. I started questioning my choice, so I Thought I could come on here to get a vast number of opinions. I am going to keep my cruisinart...actually used it today, and really like it. Either my K.A. was wearing out for awhile or this is just a tougher machine. Also nice and quiet. Looking through your responses, I found more people satisfied with the Cruisinart than the kitchen aide. So thanks for your help. Much appreciated!! Your opinion of appliances counts with me! That is the #l thing I like about the K.T. and would read alot of your suggestions and opinions before I EVER started posting. Again thank you.

what a considerate (and timely) gift! very very cool of doxie! whatcha gonna make first??? I used my Boeing 737 engine to shred the cabbage and apple for my slaw, and chop the walnuts. My cat is scared poopless when I run it but hey its worth the fresh chopped salsa!!

I owe Linda the thanks for freeing up some of my pantry space. It was great talking to you last evening. Can't wait to hear what all you shred today.

Peppi- DH and I are doing great. You would never know now that he was in a coma last summer. As for me, I had my last surgery on my neck wounds a couple of weeks ago and am on the mend finally. Hopefully later this PM I will have time to update on the trial over on conversations.
