Need help on hardwood and tile transition

Our installer came today and started installing the white oak hardwood floors. The floors butt up to the mudroom which will be porcelain tile. I know, I know, I keep reading that tile should be first but we have not done it that way...hoping it is not a huge problem.

Anyway, the hardwoods run parallel, if you will, to the tile. What do we use as a transition? Our flooring guy told us to use a metal strip in between the two but is that it? Will it look oK??

We used wood T molding to transition from wood to porcelain tile.

Our tile guy used a strip of marble.
If the two floors are different heights, he can get it as a reducer.
Looks great! Very neat and easy to keep clean.

Thanks for your replies. I saw that thread you posted a link to - I was visiting the kitchen forum before I checked to see if anyone had replied to my question. I like what that person did with the mosaic tiles, but I don't think it would look right next to vinyl (she has it between wood and concrete floors). Anyhow, the vinyl is probably temporary also, so he'd want something he could take up later. We may have to go ahead and take up the vinyl and see what there is to work with underneath. Just more work than he wanted to do right now.

You're probably going to need to make (or have someone make) a custom transition. Start with stock (same species as wood floor) slightly thicker than required, then run it through a thickness planer until the height is right. Then run it through a table saw to bevel the edge. Soften the edges (either a router or with hand tools), sand, and finish to match the floor.

Rule #1 Never grout to wood. Grout is a guaranteed failure. Especially up against floorboard end cuts. To apply something over the top looks cheap and should always be avoided IMO. See what the installer offers and do not hesitate to ask why this detail was not discussed prior. It would not be the end of the world to have 2pcs. of tile removed and replaced with a proper transition.

OK...the solid hardwood is factory finished. That's fine. It means that you can choose a solid factory finish so that EVENTUALLY you can get all of this refinished at the same time AND STILL end up with the same floor throughout. What you do is find the SPECIES of the hardwood and the width (and the thickness)...and if you can find the same grade/cut. Sure you can run it perpendicular to the hallway...so long as you are NOT on wood joists. If you have wooden subfloors the direction of the joists will dictate the direction of install. Regardless. So long as you get the same species in solid, you can always sand/refinish everything at once = same floor throughout the home. You do not have to do it today...but it gives you the BEST option to do it later if you want...or just before you put the house up for sale.

Check out the Walker Zanger online catalog. Amazing choices of porcelain tile trims, from Old World to contemporary. A narrow strip might be more durable than wood.
