When we were first married (29 years ago)I only knew how to cook meatloaf. One day I decided that I was going to make beef stroganoff. The recipe called for one clove of garlic. I had never cooked with garlic before. You guessed it, I put the entire head of garlic in. I did peel it all first at least. Needless to say, we had bologna sandwiches that night for supper. I think I smelled that garlic for a week afterward.

I'll never live down the Thanksgiving I got to yakking and forgot to put sugar in the Pumpkin pie!!! Every single one I make now, somebody has to ask "Does this have sugar in it?" I'm tempted to leave it out on purpose one of these days and tell 'em "yes". HA That'll fix 'em.

I can think of pie disasters-
First was the time at 16 that I decided to bake a cherry pie for my new boyfriend who claimed to love them. I had never baked a pie before and as some of you already know, my mother doesn't do dough or pies so I didn't realize that you had to bake it before the filling was added and baked. Eeeww, that sweet boy attempted to eat a piece of the pie just to be polite (or get on my good side LOL) and we laughed about my mistake for the rest of the relationship! I certainly learned my lesson in prebaking the pie shell!

Second one was when there was a popular mud pie recipe where you were instructed to melt a Hershey bar and pour it on top of a pie crust, add the ice cream and freeze. Well as a self proclaimed chocoholic, I just knew that if one Hershey bar was good, a really big one would be even better. Not exactly...that thick layer of frozen Hershey bar was impossible to cut, much less eat! We had good friends over for dinner and to this day we remind ourselves that more isn't always better! LOL

And if ice cream is good with some heavy cream in it, then ice cream made with ALL heavy cream should be really, really good....right? WRONG! Think cold, slushy, sweet butter!

When I was about 12 I mixed up the measurements for the sugar and salt in a sugar cookie recipe....I think I invented 'salt dough'! Ingredients $3.00; my sisters' face upon tasting...priceless!

Yup - I left the giblet package in the first time I tried to make a turkey!! We never stuffed the actual bird in my family, we always made the stuffing separately, so it wasn't like I was in there, feeling around to notice it!

I've mixed an entire banana bread, then glanced over and noticed the bowl of mashed banana still sitting there that I forgot to add in! I just had my oatmeal bread experience where I kneaded the dough, then notice I didn't add the butter! I made it again without the butter btw and it was just as good!

I made a stir fry once when I was first learning Asian cooking and I used all prepared ingredients. By the time I added the soy sauce and this sauce and that sauce the end result was so salty it was inedible!!

The biggest "almost" tragedy was this past Christmas with my mom - she's getting up there in age and her eyesight isn't what it used to be and she bought cilantro by mistake instead of parsley. I don't think the ravioli would have been edible with cilantro!! Good thing my sister noticed before she added it into the ricotta! Altho, even with her eyesight, I can't see how she didn't SMELL the difference!

OMG! I am aggravated. So I am glad I remembered this thread was here so I can vent and maybe find my sense of humor again.

I have a long list of things I have to do today, plus a sick husband, and of course the grocery store had some beef shank cross cuts on markdown, just the thing I needed to turn the marrow bones in my freezer into stock. So, I figured I'd just get that going and move on to my other chores.

I duly roasted the meat and bones 'till nicely brown and put them in the pot with water, and then put the veggies in to roast. I like to start the bones simmering first, so that I can skim off the first layer of gunk before adding the veggies, which complicate the skimming process.

Then I realized that I had also picked up a big package of mixed, marked down mushrooms and had promised my husband his favorite, mushroom soup. So, I set to chopping and sauteing onions, mushrooms and celery again, got out my spice grinder to powder some dried mushrooms and sliced the fresh. I got the roux made, pureed the now soft vegetables I'd set to simmering in stock, added the roux and powdered mushrooms, and eventually finished off the soup with another batch of sliced onions, celery and mushrooms,and turned it off to cool. Phew.

Now I noticed a rank smell. I'd burnt all the veggies I was roasting. I really didn't want to have to roast again, so I figured I'd use raw veggies as there were plenty of brown beef bits and caramelized juices from the veggies in the pan. Cut up more onions, celery, and carrots to add to the stock pot and went out to gather the herbs to add as well.

Then I drained off the fat from the pan, and carefully added hot water and scraped every last smudge of brown off into the water. Which I promptly dumped into my mushroom soup which didn't need it instead of into my stock which did.

I suppose I'll make do with adding a wee bit of Kitchen Bouquet to the stock to make up for the lack of all those lovely brown bits, but if I go back into the kitchen in the next half hour, I'll likely do something I'll regret later.

It's almost 1:30, I've accomplished almost nothing on my original list, and I'm very glad my husband has finally gone back to bed because he really doesn't want to be around me right now.

Well, um, when my now husband (of 34 years) and I were dating, one time and ONLY ONE TIME, I forgot to put tuna in the tuna-noodle casserole. I often eat only veggies, so that wasn't such a stretch. Anyway, two weeks ago I made tuna-noodle casserole and my husband asked if I had added the tuna. Enough already! Some things should be forgotten especially after 34 years!
