natural ventilation ? (cross post in windows)
Comments (7)I know you don't care about resale but think of the waste generated when you leave the house and someone has to tear out all the perfectly good windows. Most people really prefer open windows when weather allows and it also helps with energy use when weather is favorable. Your natural ventilation requirement may be local/regional. I have a house with a room with large windows that are all fixed. But every room still has enough opening windows to ventilate. Think of the cooking mishap.......See Morehelp!
Comments (5)gwyllion, I have experienced the same rage twice in the past few months. Went completely out of control yelling and screaming over something very minor and insignificant but at the time it was basically a breaking point and mentally I couldn't handle the anxiety anylonger...so...an explosion ensued. It's no fun. Yes, afterwards you feel like a huge idiot and I'm lucky that both times no ones feelings got hurt or someone's neck broken. I experience high levels of anxiety often and it presents in a meanness and nastiness that I sometimes have difficulty controlling. Days that I know I'm having alot of trouble I don't go anywhere if I can help it because I don't want an explosion in a public place. The smallest things upset me greatly when I'm in a very anxious state. I know that, I try to keep a perspective during those days but it's very difficult. Last week I was making motel reservation's. I wanted adjoining rooms but guy on the phone was telling me that they can't guarantee that at all, and I could just feel my blood start to boil in my veins. It wasn't his fault it was just that I was now having to deal with a situation that was going to cause me alot of screwing around the weekend we go away and when I'm having a high anxiety day anyway, it's this kind of 'little' stuff that will set me off. Anyway, I knew I had to get off the phone before I ripped into this poor guy so I just told him, I have to hang up now, I'll call back later. Click. But it wasn't over because now I was MAD and I had to get rid of that anger or it would just keep festering. My heart was racing I was just about to lose complete control again. I went outside and walked, very very quickly, up and down our driveway until I could get myself calmed down. And all this over the fact that you can't reserve adjoining rooms anymore!! But once my anger is heightened I have a hard time bringing it back down. That day in particular, for the rest of the day I was just prickly. Crabbing at my kids, DH, every little thing just p*ssed me off all day long. Physically and emotionally it absolutely wears me out. When I've had a day or two with a high level of anxiety I am wiped out and then the following couple of days I have no energy at all. It helped me alot once I realized that my anger/anxiety was a perimenopause symptom and not me in the process of a breakdown. Some days are really hard but when I feel myself starting to lose a grip on reality I just keep telling myself it's hormone's and nothing more and I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill and I need to calm myself down. It stinks. But we'll get through it. And hopefully still be married!...See MorePlease help me choose my range!!! I'm so confused...
Comments (50)I have a viking 30 inch vdsc that has been installed for about a year and a half and am happy with it. I chose this range because I wanted a black range and I wanted dual fuel, we have to use a lp tank and did not want to have both the range top and oven dependent on the tank. I am a cook-something-quick-and-easy-that-my-picky-kids-and-picky-husband-will-eat-5-days-a-week cook so did not need a super high powered cook top, I almost never go above med-high. I do use the simmer a lot and it is not the best so I bought a simmer plate to help get an evenly low cooking surface. The burners are closed and have been very easy to clean but I have not had any overflows or cooking mishaps that would get anywhere near that part of the burners. The black, shiny surface that is below the grates of the viking does show every little bit of dirt and I do clean it frequently using soap and water and a dry rag to buff out water streaks. The oven seems to take a bit longer to preheat than my old stove and because it uses the broiler to help preheat you cannot stick items in before the preheat is done or you will burn the tops (I still sometimes put items in early but keep them on the bottom rack.) The oven also cooks a little differently than I am used to, cannot really explain how or why but it does leave most items moister which is nice. If you have concerns with how a viking cooks I would recommend finding a dealer that offers demonstrations, the dealer I bought from had demos all of the time....See MoreOh no! Cooking mishap and how you solved
Comments (18)Well, my mishap occurred three years ago, but it will live in infamy in my family. Background: In addition to Christmas, between Dec 23 and 29 we also have four birthdays, so our family of six kids, six spouses, seven grandkids, Hub and I gather from far and wide for several days every year. Three years ago, one son and his family moved into their new home Dec 22 and wanted our entire family to gather in their new home - 21 of us. I was charged with preparing the meat. On Dec 22 I bought 15 pounds of beautiful beef tenderloin and a frozen duck. Because my fridge was full, I put the meats, well-wrapped in their butcher wrap and grocery store bags, on top of the newspapers in the recycling bin in our garage, which was perfect at 30°. Christmas morning I went to retrieve the meats. The bin was EMPTY! Recycling was picked up the day before, and Hub had dutifully put it on the curb. Panic on Christmas morning, not to mention mourning the financial loss. We pulled all meats of every description from our freezer, a couple chicken breasts, a couple hamburgers, a few pork chops, a very small beef roast, some salmon, and a sausage or two, and called it a Christmas Smörgåsbord. What can you do? Couldn't ask the kids to bring anything because they were already here! Stores were all closed. We had plenty of food because the sides and deserts weren't affected. It was a blasted nuisance to cook all the different meats, but delicious nonetheless. The upside was I got my freezer cleaned out, and I shan't be keeping this year's meats in the recycling bin....See More- 9 years ago
