I can't find boysenberry pie nor the berries themselves!

I remember growing up and eating boysenberry pie that was purchased from the frozen section of the grocery store. If the brand was good, so was the pie. This is one of my favorite pies and I can't find the pie, nor the berries.

If it makes any difference, I live on the central coast of CA. Von's (Safeway) does not carry it. I asked and they told me it is not that popular a pie (or people nuts?). I still have 3 other chains to try.

Any ideas? I wouldn't mind making it myself, but again, I have never seen the berries in the produce isle.

Oh, yes. My favorite berry (well, for pies Marionberries might be a tie). Given your location, you might take a look around this summer and see if you can order some from a farmer's market. They do freeze very well.

In the meantime, there's always Amazon if you don't mind ordering a case of the canned berries. At least the shipping is free. I worked for Oregon Fruit Products when I was in college. It's a family company and the berries come right out of the Willamette Valley.

Marie Callender has a good frozen one. I get them at Costco.

party_music50: Recipe sounds good! I have been SO disappointed though when the berries this year from the first year after planting were so 'blah!" No flavor or tartness at all... I am SO upset! My memory it seems they were rather tart when we kids ate them. Are your elderberries tart or have any real flavor at all? Someone said the first crop after planting will be that way but it is a mystery to me...! If the same next year, those bushes will be dug out; the bushes grew from the 18 in. twigs planted last spring to bushes over 8 feet tall this year & full of blooms & tasteless berries.... no way would they ever be used in a pie... no flavor at ALL!! Birds even left them alone! Do you have a special/easy way to glean the berries from the clusters ? I also have ground cherries which come up from seed all over every year & I love to use in pies but they are a bit on the bland side also so I use a bit of lemon juice in the pies also... no sugar needed! Now those are REALLY labor intensive to pick up the individual husks from the ground, take each berry from the husk, etc.!! Have you used them also? I live at 5200 ft. in a high desert area; temps get below freezing most winters, summers in the 90's & low rainfall (except this year!!)

Pollinators? Maybe, but other stuff set fruit just fine. ==>>> in my MI ... RB bloom 6 to 8 weeks before any fruit trees ... in fact.. they are the first thing to bloom.. barely after the soil thaws ... and basically.... that is what makes me happiest about them .... the first tree/shrub sign of spring ... i like the heavy frost/freeze theory ... but i would also think about how active the pollinators might be.. if they bloom during a cold week ... the flowers last longer ... but the bugs just might not be all that active ... tie both ideas together ... and bingo... wait.. bazinga.. little or no pollination ... ken

Bridget - our season for wildfires just officially started this week (they base it on temperature, wind, and how dry the wild plants are), and goes until November, so that is 7 months. The huge climbers on our house could be kept shorter, in theory, but the last time we cut them down to 7 feet tall (so that the house could be painted), they went right back up 3 stories within a few months, and I really do not feel like dealing with a constant pruning effort. The Fire Dept said I could plant small shrubs in that bed, including roses, as long as they do not touch the house, so I am contemplating some antique polyanthas or whatever, if I can find some which would stay smaller. I can't help you find the boysenberries since I'm now in Connecticut where a lot of people have never had the pleasure of eating boysenberries. But, your post sure brought back many wonderful memories of eating a huge sugar cookie & drinking a glass of fresh boysenberry juice at Knott's Berry Farm when I worked there as a musician in the Steak House as a teenager. I would go for my boysenberry snack in between sets. Thanks for the memory.

Check at the nursery...they may have the vines to plan and you can grow your own. My brother lives in Templeton (by SLO)middle of the state of Calif.
My dad's favorite pie..we always had it on Sundays.

When I lived on the Central Coast there was a U-Pick Boysenberry farm in Santa Margarita. Loved that place, but they grow very easily in that area, so plant a few. It's easy. Nanny

One day, as i was leaving Simonian Farms (where 5 out of 4 Fresnans shop), I stopped to talk to a lady just going in. She was hoping they still had Boysenberries... she just wanted to bake a pie in the worst way. She gave me her recipe right there on the spot and it is a good one:

Boysenberry Pie
Faye Tolbert, Corcoran, CA

1 unbaked pie shell
1 to 1-1/2 pounds fresh or frozen Boysenberries
1/2 cup flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 to 1 cup water

Use enough berries to generously fill the pie shell. Mix flour and sugar together; pour over berries. Add enough water to come up to 1/3rd the inside of the pie shell. Add top crust, crimping all around. Make vent in top crust. Bake at 350-375 degrees F for 45 minutes to 1 hour - until juice appears thick.

There is a u-pick at Avila Beach, near San Louis Obispo, for olallieberry, which is kind of a boysenberry. We have made overnight trips to visit this farm and stay in Avila Beach. There is also Berry Lady Farms in Kingsburg but thatÃ¯Â¿Â½s off highway 99 south of Fresno not even close to the coast.

Did the Marie Callender's in Pismo or Shell Beach close? They carry a couple of berry pies that are better than mine, unfortunately. Not all grocers are carrying MC frozen pies but maybe that's seasonal. It's too early for berries here. Berries at Costco are generally a mix of berries.
