Heat Pump Icing Up!

This past weekend we had a winter storm hit with freezing rain and snow. During the night I noticed that the auxliary heat was running a lot. I never heard the fan running on the outside unit but I did hear the compressor running. I went outside and checked it and it had ice all inside the unit especially up where the fan turns. The fan blades would try to turn but once it hit the ice it would quit trying to turn. The next morning I went out and knocked the ice loose. Once I did, I turned the unit back on and the fan worked fine. But even though the fan is working now, the auxliary heat seems to still run a lot for some reason. I would appreciate everyone's help with this problem. I know that with the unit running on auxliary heat a lot means money being wasted. I have a Trane XR15 ( Model #4TWR5048E1 ) Air Handler ( 4TEE3F65B1 )that I purchased back in October 2009.
