QTR& rift sawn 2 1/4" T&G White Oak

I just had 410sqft of this flooring laid in our new kitchen. As the title says, it is rift and Qtr sawn. To my eye, and I know what I am looking at I would think that there would be at least 25% of one grain pattern in the mix. The floor looks beautiful pre-finish but is almost entirely rift sawn. I counted the number of boards with any qtr sawn pattern and out of 410sq ft there are about 25 boards and most of them are shorties. The first coat of finish goes on today so I will confirm the count. The guy who laid the floor did an excellent job and it will look great finished. That said I'm more than a little hot over what I would call mis-representation and will have the vendor out next week. Nothing can be done at this point and we'll be in the new kitchen next week but I'm looking forward to the discussion.

Make sure, if you are ordering and told that you are buying a mix product that you ask more detailed questions about exactly what you will be getting

Each mill has its own interpretation of QTR & Rift, #1 common and so forth and each has its own way of inspecting and selecting the product. Even packaging is different from mill to mill. You can still find 'bundled' flooring (equal lengths tied together), but most is now packaged as 'nested' bundles, which contain mixed lengths in each bundle.

Standardization in appearance of a natural product, such as wood, is difficult to establish. Consumers pay a hefty upcharge when requesting all QTR sawn or Rift sawn or all long lengths.

I am not excusing your concerns, just describing some of the basic nature of the product and how it gets to the consumer.

If it's not plain sawn, all quartered or all rift, it must be rift and quartered. Quarter sawn doesn't necessarily mean that the medullary rays run exactly parallel to the board surface.

I suggest you do something that helps you cool off before speaking to your floor vendor. Being more than a little hot serves no positive purpose.

mwrede, I LOVE your floors and the stain your chose. I can't believe what a great price you got and if I lived in NC and not in expensive northern NJ, I would go for the exact same floor with the exact same company since it is beautiful, priced right and will be stable since it is quartersawn and rift white oak flooring. After my busy season, I will call Graff Bros. directly to see if they have a competitive price on stained engineered white oak rift and sawn flooring since I love the look but I need engineered due to the cement floor and the location of my home. I am just finishing up a remodel and I also used Mirage floors. I wanted a floor with as durable a finish as possible because refinishing would be extremely difficult in my condo as I would have to vacate and move all furniture. When researching I also read that the oil finish floors are higher maintenance which is not something I was interested in. I wanted my floors to be a background for the rest of my design decisions - I have a lot of custom Quarter Sawn WHITE Oak cabinets in kitchen, dining area as well as a wall of built ins in the open den area that I use as an office. I also have wood stained doors with glass inserts. I went with their Red Oak Select & Better because I wanted to minimize knots and movement and "character". It is their natural so very light and I like the way it contrasts with my honey caramel stained white oak woodwork.

can you show us what you've tried so far? Since the veneer is so much lighter than the rails, you're doing to have to use a darker choice on the panels. without experimenting w/some stain colors, going to be hard to advise you. see if you can stain the veneer to be the same color as the rails, and then use the rubio. try a Driftwood or weathered gray type of stain and see if you get close. you may have to mix the driftwood w/a brown tone that matches your natural oak maybe something like #5 or 3? these are bona Dri fast stains Clockwise from top left: 1) white, 2) driftwood, 3) Bona Traffic w/o sealer, 4) BonaSeal w/o stain, 5) 25% white and 75% birch, 6) birch, and 7) sand dune

bry911, I watched that same video last night. I was amazed that his third experiment was successful and gave me hope. At the end of last year when I questioned the finishing guy, he said he is going to hand-sand to remove the top-coat. And I doubt he/they will try to educate themselves. So I am going to put something in writing and send it to the owner to sign-off that if the finisher sands through the veneer, is not able to do an adequate job of color blending, or causes any other irreparable damage that all the doors be replaced with matching wood. Perhaps that will make him pay attention. They did do a good job for the most part. The biggest errors have resulted from the owner trying to take shortcuts and rush the installers. When the fridge panels had to be repaired (but were replaced instead), the installer told the owner that he needed to replace the large pop-up door above the fridge at the same time. But the owner didn't want to do that. That door is such a different color than the other two batches of wood. If it had been replaced then it wouldn't stand out visually. And then the finishing guy wouldn't have applied the whitewash trying to mask the differences. But, 20/20 hindsight and all that. Here are a couple of other pics to show the whole design. The doors above the cooktop have the Blum Aventos Lift Up System with Servo-Drive. And the niche in the island has floating quartz that is supported with hidden, inset support brackets. I did a lot of research to find out if that was a possibility and then found a custom stone installation company that had done something similar before. They were more than willing to take on that aspect of the project.

My rift and quartered was supposed to be 60-70% rift and the rest quartered. I have under 10% quartered, which doesn't bother me -- I would have ordered all rift, but R & Q was significantly cheaper.

What I didn't like was that there is a lot of flat sawn appearance. The boards may show some rift, but some boards show a lot more cathedral than rift. Also, there were a significant number of shorts under the 12" minimum, quite a number of boards discarded for bad milling, etc. I had ordered 10% more than my installer would normally order (so I could be picky), but had to order even more, and still had to use boards that should have been used for kindling wood. My service/delivery/etc. from Hurst Hardwoods was fine, but I should have paid another $1.40/sq ft and bought the material locally.
