Our Rift & Quartered white oak floors -Pictures

I have been reading the forums for a while now.

Our new floors are in and I wanted to post some info and pics.

We went with 5" rift and quartered select white Oak from Graff Bros and used a custom blended Duraseal stain and 2 coats of Traffic satin finish. We also refinished our red oak stairs with the same color (added the rift/quarted in the landings).

Now we have to refinish the lower level (2 1/4 regular white oak) to match.

We are in NC and the company we used was VERY competitive in it's prices.

Cost : $8.71/sq ft

Material $4.31/sq foot including tax (would have never gotten this price if I hadn't found the hurst hardwood site- thanks ccoombs1!)

Istallation $1.75/sq ft

Sanding $1.95/sq ft

Stain $0.20/sq ft

upgrade to Bona Traffic $0.50/sq ft

(After reading the forum I was planning to order Taylor lumber brand flooring from Hurst Hardwoods at $3.99/sq +$200 for shipping but our flooring guy was able to bacically match the price with the Graff Bros product through his distributor Horizon Products so we went with it.)

For a while I was looking at prefinished and even handscraped floors but it was so hard to find at the exact color/look that i wanted. I am so glad I went with the site finished floors even though they took 4 days to sand and finish and a lot of heartache to get them to look just right.

In any case we would have never been able to have our floors if it wasn't for all the information i learned through these forums so thank you everyone!

mwrede, I LOVE your floors and the stain your chose. I can't believe what a great price you got and if I lived in NC and not in expensive northern NJ, I would go for the exact same floor with the exact same company since it is beautiful, priced right and will be stable since it is quartersawn and rift white oak flooring. After my busy season, I will call Graff Bros. directly to see if they have a competitive price on stained engineered white oak rift and sawn flooring since I love the look but I need engineered due to the cement floor and the location of my home.

Where are you in NJ? We just move to NC a few months ago from Wyckoff.

My advice would be try not to be discouranged by the prices they are quoting you. Just do a lot of researh, figure out what you like and get a lot of quotes. In fact in many cases you can order online and just find a good local installer (not a store) to put the floors in.

Ive refinished hardwood floors for over 10 years. And while both maple and white oak have differences its mostly down to color that seperates them. Maple is "harder" based off the Janka rating system used by industry. But dont be fool all wood will dent if something is dropped. But back to color. Yes maple is lighter in natural tone but doesnt accept staining well. It can be done and look good but not as evenly as oak does. Oak is of course darker and also has thicker grains then maple. If you are going natural with the finish i personally like white oak over maple. Maple tends to become too orange as the floor ambers over time.

What kind of plant do they get the jaco-beans from? No one has ever been able to say. ;) Red oak has a stronger color-presence to overcome that it would appear from looking at the unfinished wood. Black walnut stain, which has some greenish cast in it, may be more useful as the first coat to deal with the excess of warmth. Casey

sincerelymjandrj@yahoo.com , Rift Sawn White Oak is a beautiful selection. It is very strange that the contractor has never worked with White Oak before. I would ask to see his portfolio and look for reviews. Most big remodels and new construction use White Oak over Red Oak.

The raw look of White Oak could work...assuming you have the right GRADE of wood. A White oak floor coated in water based poly (ie. 2 part high priced stuff) MUST HAVE: A. Sealant, or B. Stain White Oak can handle Bona NordicSeal without turning pink. The NordicSeal is both sealant and white frosting on the wood. This can then be finished with Bona Traffic HD (2-3 coats). Your words to your refinisher are: "I like the look of Bona NordicSeal over White oak. I like the Scandinavian look it creates. I do NOT want anything yellow or anything that TURNS yellow on my floor. What would you use to create the look that I want?"

Mwrede, Thank you for the links. I am going to call Graf Bros and coswick after my tax season ends. I still love the Brazilian Cherry flooring but with all my cabinets on top of the floor and seeing the major color change, I am beginning to think a stained floor is better for me or the Amendoim. But I will make up my mind after my busy season. I love the way Rift and Quartered White Oak Floors look so much. I also like the way Rift and Quartered Red Oak Floors look that I seen pictures of on the Decorating Forum. I love that type of grain that is not busy but pretty.
