Just a thought.....Nigella Lawson used it all the time on her show.....could it have been one of her recipes?

I remember it being discussed right here on the forum, so I'm sure that someone was probably asking about a recipe, substitution, etc. Maybe last summer?

It was David I think. Runs in my mind he was having trouble finding it for a recipe.

Maybe it was the same thread but there was bug discussion about corn syrup and the HFCS thing, Lyle's was cited as a great sub.

I use Lyle's for Treacle pudding, Butter tarts and anyhting that calls for corn syrup.

I use it for pecan pie!

Thanks everybody! I think I recall what it was, some kind of dessert bar with oatmeal. I'll try and find it.

Am I the only one who's never heard of these? Last night I was catching up on some old issues of Bon Appetit I had never gotten around to reading and in this year's March issue, I came across this recipe for British flapjacks by Molly Wizenberg. The author tells how she had these in England when she was a teenager backpacking across Europe. Flapjacks are basically an oatmeal bar cookie, and not pancakes as we sometimes refer to them. I know they don't look like much and they are dead simple to make but to someone like me who thinks there is no more heavenly combination than oats, butter and brown sugar, these bars are simply wonderful....kind of like a thick, buttery oatmeal cookie. Since I live in Podunk, TN and do not have ready access to golden syrup, I subbed Caro Brown sugar corn syrup with good results. I can only imagine how good they are with the Lyle's golden syurp.

British Flapjacks

Ingredients
�1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into 8 pieces
�1/2 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
�1/4 cup golden syrup*
�2 1/3 cups quick-cooking oats (not instant or old-fashioned)
�Pinch of salt
�* A type of syrup popular in Great Britain; available at some supermarkets, specialty foods stores, and British import shops.
Preparation
�Preheat oven to 350�F. Butter 8x8x2-inch metal baking pan. Combine first 3 ingredients in heavy medium saucepan. Stir constantly over medium-low heat until butter melts, sugar dissolves, and mixture is smooth. Remove from heat. Add oats and salt; stir until coated. Transfer mixture to prepared pan and spread out in even layer.
�Bake until top is golden (edges will be darker), about 25 minutes. Cool in pan on rack 5 minutes. Cut into 4 squares; cut each into 4 triangles (mixture will still be soft). Cool completely in pan before serving.

Now....where can I buy some Lyle's syrup?
Quick before I forget why I wanted it!

I stockpile it!!! It's plenty good just licked off the spoon as far as I'm concerned (LOL), such a lovely buttery taste. I use it instead of high fructose corn syrup in pecan pie, peanut brittle, etc. The link below at their web site will give you more than enough recipes to use up the jar.

You can order it on-line - check Amazon.com. I always stock-up when we drive through St. Louis (Boone's Crossing) at a World Market where we like to stop on our 12-hour trip from Kansas to our daughter's in Tennessee. Shopping at the World Market is a GREAT way to stretch your legs on a long car trip ;-).

Glad you found the Lyle's! Hope you like the bars. Funny story, I was visiting family in OH and I went into the grocery store where I worked as a teenager and met my DH. I found the Lyle's which I KNOW we didn't carry when I worked there a million years ago. The checkout girl happened to be British(not a common occurence in Beavercreek OH) and asked my why I was buying the syrup. I told her for flapjacks and she actually knew what I was talking about. She was telling me how she likes it for treacle tarts.
Oh, and the flapjacks were wonderful with the Lyle's!

Tracey, Thanks for the Flapjacks recipe. I went right in the kitchen and made some! Although I didn't have Quick Cooking Oats, I ran my regular oats through the food processor to break them down. The bars turned out well in spite of myself, and I'm glad to have such a quick easy dessert fix I can use my Lyle's Golden Syrup in.

I've seen that Lyle's syrup somewhere in a grocery store fairly recently. I remember glancing at it and thinking, oh, there's that stuff they were duscussing on CF. I didn't buy it because, well, the last thing I need to make are sweets, although dessert IS called for sometimes.

This recipe sounds pretty good. Does the butter/brown sugar/syrup mixture make a sort of caramel? I might copy paste this and buy the syrup. Just have to figure out now WHICH grocery store I saw it in.

May, it does have a caramel sort of taste once the bars are baked. The reason I like it so much besides the fact that it's easy (dead simple like Tracey says), is the fiber content is great. I had one for second breakfast this morning, and really like them. I can see why cutting them before they harden is called for, so be sure to do that. Once they cool, they are very chewy!

You know, I do that all the time. (Forget why I bought something.) I started printing out the recipes so I would remember, in addition to putting them in a computer file (in this instance labeled ''Lyle's Golden Syrup''). Sometimes I'll print the ingredient/recipe name on my chalkboard, because one of my favorite things to do is erase the board! I'm still figuring out how to get organized, and wondering if this is something we ever actually achieve. One can always hope!

I'm not sure if I can! Just as I think I'm organized, something comes along to throw a kink in it. Maybe it's time constraints but then again, mostly it's just life. Oh well, whatcha gonna do? I'm tryin anyway!

My recipe for Anzac biscuits calls for it.\

Anzac Biscuits � Dark and Crispy

350 degree oven

1 � cups flour
1 � cups sugar
2 cups rolled oats
2 cups dessicated coconut
1 cup butter
2 tablespoons golden syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 tablespoons boiling water

Bring small amount of water to a boil. Mix together flour, sugar, oats and coconut in a large bowl. Melt butter in a small bowl. Add golden syrup and baking soda dissolved in boiling water. Make a well in the dry mixture and add wet mixture. Mix thoroughly. Roll small, uniform pieces of dough into balls and place on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for about 12 or 13 minutes.

These cookies are flat and crispy and would make good sandwich cookies.

Excellent with tea.

In England, a very traditional dessert is treacle tart - no treacle in it at all - golden syrup. It's really good. Recipe link below.
