Carrier Infinity vs American Standard Freedom 95

Hello, My furnace is shot and have been quoted prices on two units for replacement HVAC in my home.

WHich would you choose?

Carrier Infinity 96 or the American Standard (Trane) Freedom 95? We are doing both our upstairs and downstairs zones, so two furnaces, two ACs. Thanks for any input.

What A/C's are being quoted? That is, what other model numbers were you given, including coil and thermostat? If you weren't given them, it's important you get them, because the system as a whole needs to be considered. The Infinity furnace is good when used in conjunction with the Infinity control thermostat, and also the Carrier Infinity A/C or Performance A/C, both of which are 'communicating.' Both are top of the line units -- I wouldn't have a problem with either.

I agree either would be fine. But I would want the brand/system configuration that qualifies for the Fed Tax Stimulus HVAC credit, if any. I would start with either a Carrier or sister company, Bryant dealer. Qualifying standards may be a challenge.

Sorry I do not have the model numbers. American Standard is quoting their Freedom 95 Premium model in a 60,000 BTU, a 2 stage heat/one stage cool Stat and do not know what the coil is. Carrier is quoting their Performance 96 model 59TP5 60,000 BTU unit, a performance series edge Stat, will have to check on the coil. Is there something I should look for in the coil when I talk to them on Monday?

Thanks TD. I will look into the L series to double check - and the 9kw strips. Thanks for the suggestion with the Performance series - the Carrier had already supplied that quote to me as well. But it had the Infinity heat pump as the outside unit with performance everything else. I've asked him to revise the quote - but it looks like the performance setup would be about $2-3k less than the infinity setup. I really do like the idea of the communication with the Infinity setup (like the stat too). I'm OK with the price. I think that number looks average comparing it to other threads on this board. I think my 2 Trane guys were pretty high, but they are the only 2 authorized dealers in town. Bryant Evolution quote came back more than the Carrier Infinity. Thanks for the advice. I might put up the final 2 quotes in a bit to get thoughts - the Performance setup vs the Infinity setup.

Boris, Your house and set up are very similar to mine. Two story house with 3100 sq. ft. serviced by two furnaces and condensers. I had Carrier Infinity Furnaces (58MVC60) and condensers (24ana17 2 ton downstairs, 3 ton upstarirs) installed in April. So far the air conditioning comfort has been great. If you go with Carrier, here are my comments: The 58MVB furnace is being phased out and being replaced by the 3 stage 58MVC. There is nothing wrong with the 58MVB, except the lack of the 3rd stage. I think the price difference is about $200. Has the Carrier dealer informed you about the rebates? The combination of Infinity furnace and Comfort condenser is a $150 rebate if you get the Infinity controller. If you upgrade to the Performance or Infinity condensers then the rebates are $400 and $1000 respectively. I found after rebates the Infinity system was about the same price as the Infinity/Comfort configuration. A Carrier humidifier has a $25 rebate. I recommend you purchase the 10 year parts and labor warranty directly from Carrier. The Carrier dealer can include this in the quote.

A-S can't touch what all the Infinity control can do but for most people, it does more than they would ever use. The Freedom 95 with Honeywell Vision Pro IAQ would be all most need anyway. I personally am more of an A-S/Trane fan.

As for the tax credits, I couldn't find any Carrier furnaces besides some 40,000 BTU models that met the 95% AFUE criteria in the downflow position. I guess some will report it anyway but if you are one who doesn't cheat on their taxes and have a downflow application, the Freedom 95 is the way to go.
