Unexplained weight loss

I'm in between appointments with my internist, but this is a pattern that has established itself for the last several months. It was only after a visit to someone I've been seeing every month recently that my (and the doctor's) alarm button was pushed.

I've been consistently losing weight at the rate of five or so pounds a month for a long time.....didn't really think about it much. I'm at the point where I'm not willing to lose any more and I haven't been trying to lose weight, period! I ingest more calories than I burn by exercise, that's for sure.

I am concerned. This is different, for me. Any useful thoughts would be appreciated.

Concern indeed. Useful thought would be don't wait, go get checked.

Are you experiencing any other symptoms at all? If not, has anything changed in your diet at all? Are you simply eating less, or lower calorie food, or have cut out something without realizing it? Are you experiencing normal hunger symptoms before meal time? Any weakness or fatigue?

I would try to keep careful track of the above while insisting that all appropriate tests are run, beginning with a blood test. Keep insisting on getting an answer.

The only time I lost weight like this without trying was when I had a G.I. infection, but the other symptoms--malabsorption of food resulting in diarrhea--was obvious.

Does it have shiny leaves? If not, it's probably a Rose of Sharon, and it's going dormant. They are deciduous.

HELP! 10 year old wetting bed

    Q

    Comments (24)
My son has ADHD, and is very active. He has trouble sleeping, which surprises me, since he plays so hard all day long. I tried the bed alarm, but he wasn't allowing it to work. Every time he used it, he wet it about 10-15 minutes after he went to bed(yes he went to the bathroom right before bed). It was almost as if he was forcing pee to come out so he could hear the alarm go off. The problem is, once the pad is wet, you have to wait till it's dry again to use it again. He's still wearing pull-ups, and wets almost every night. Tonight, only 5 minutes after he went to bed, he let out a little yell, and when I went to go see what the matter was, he said his sister turned his light on(not the case). I looked at his bed, and it was soaked with urine, and he had a pull-up on, plus he had his Nintendo DSI open in the middle of the bed!He has snuck the DSI into his bed many times, and he loses it for a day, but, tonight I told him he lost his DSI for a week! I was furious, because I knew he peed intentionally, and his pull-op obviously wasn't fully covering him. I don't know what else to do. He has to "want" to quit pee-ing the bed, I can't force him to quit. Does anyone have any advice?

Weight Loss in Cat. Any thoughts on what this could be?

    Q

    Comments (20)
(Meg, she stated the cat has had dental work done-at 13 - this means cat was probably on kibble which causes dental issues because it is unnatural for feline jaws and teeth.) Go to www.Felinefuture.com to learn more. I think you should invest in better feeding now before more serous issues happen.- a 13 year old cat is really middle-to getting older age, like 56- 65 in human years, cats should live over 20- unless they are over bred or have birth defects- heart issues/ect.. 13 -14 is "old" for house cats because 70% to 90% of pet cats eat, like people do in 3 world countries ( human rarely live to 50 in Africa for example)

One of the symptoms of diabetes is weight loss. Have you discussed this with your doctor?

Have you had your thyroid checked?

Diabetes was my first thought too. I'm told the symptom of weight loss is often combined with excessive thirst. In any case, I hope you can have this checked out quickly to fix whatever might need fixing and to ease your mind. Keep us posted, Rhizo.

Get thee to a doctor ASAP, my dear. No sense in waiting. It could make a big difference in your treatment, should you need any. If not, you should write a book. Millions would pay to find out how you did it!

Yes, Diabetes Insipidus could be the problem... doctors often miss it. I knew a lady who lost about 100 lbs before she was correctly diagnosed.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will make an appointnent with my primay doctor for sure.

We keep very regular track of things with me due to a very bad reaction to a statin drug (evil Crestor). I continue to have some residual aftershocks from that. I can't take any cholesterol lowering drugs but manage it by diet. Same for my borderline diabetes. Actually, I started drinking a daily 'green sludgy " (NutriBullet) about a year ago and was able to go off diabetes and BP entirely. Those issues, including high cholestrol, are inherited from both sides of my family.

Fit and active as a whole family, all four of us children have had to be number watchers our whole lives. Only one is a stupid idiot who smokes and drinks to great excess and has had two heart attacks before the age of 50.

I do have a good appetite, I think. I've always been able to eat well and plenty and often without side effects or weight gain. Again, the whole family has been like that.

I did have an endoscopy and colonoscopy (routine) last year resulting in a clean bill of health. But have also had abdominal pain and tenderness over the years with lots of resultant tests of various kinds. Always negative.

What has triggered my concern is that I had seen this particular neurologist after Thanksgiving and again a few days ago. He commented on my weight loss during the holidays which seemed unusual to him. It is strange, considering how much I was eating!

So! I am going to keep track of what and when I eat. And we bought a scale (I've never had one!).

I'll keep you up to date. I'll probably discover that I'm not eating as much as I think!

I would suspect the stuff you've been drinking for a year, but you said you had abdominal pain prior to that. You might want to be checked for celiac disease.... typical symptoms are abdominal pain, anemia, and weight loss.

When I did the same several years ago, overactive thyroid. It wasn't particularly difficult to treat in the hands of a good endocrinologist - I hope you find a simple answer to your issue too ;)

This past year, just like you, I was losing weight which I can't afford to do. I went from my normal 96 pounds down to 86. Naturally cancer was the first thought in my doctor's mind, but I knew I didn't have cancer. I was put through every test possible...thyroid (complete), xrays, CT scan with dye contrast, colonoscopy, endoscopy, cystosocopy, complete bloodwork.....all normal. Doctor put me on an appetite stimulus pill. I wasn't eating enough. With Ensure, lots of snickers bars and other nuts, cheese crackers, fatty foods like McDonald's Big Macs, I finally gained back what I had lost. For your own peace of mind, get every test run that can possibly be run and eat, eat, eat....every couple of hours and also before bed.

Besides my not eating enough, I think a big reason for the weight loss was several years of constant diarrhea due to IBS which I now have under control thanks to taking Welchol.

would it be possible for you to share with us the problems you have had with Crestor. I was on Lipitor and one other one and Crestor. I had to be taken off of it. I've had a lot of problems and hope Crestor was the cause of some of hem.

Same as morz8. An over active thyroid triggered by Graves' disease was the culprit. I have never had weight issues and a healthy appetite. When I first started losing weight I thought it was just because it was a busy time of life for me and a normal fluctuation, but even after I consciously started packing on the calories the weight loss continued. In case it is Graves, get your thyroid levels checked ASAP, I almost let it go too far and had a couple of scary episodes (I was also 102 pounds by that time at 5'5"). You don't want to risk a thyroid storm.

Regarding cholesterol lowering medications, I can't take Lipitor or any others either. You might want to look into Cholesterice, available at a health food store and also Red Yeast Rice. You need to take CoQ10 with these. This has helped my cholesterol.

Party, I had been sufferting from lots of tummy/digestive problems before I started on the green drinks. The problems stopped once I started with those veggie/fruity drinks. :-)

My problems with Crestor began a few weeks after starting on it. I developed terrible muscle fatigue, muscle paint, and weakness. Blood tests indicated the presence of certain muscle proteins as well as impaired liver function. My doctor reduced my dose by half which still helped with the cholesterol but did not resolve the debilitating side effects. I've been off statins for about eight years, I guess....maybe more.

Though my liver function has improved and blood and urine tests are good (which took several years after stopping the drug), I still have physical symptoms.

Using a red rice product of any kind is not something that anyone with a problem with statins should do. I'd be scared to try CholesteRice. To date, I have been managing the cholesterol problem with triple fish oil, fiber dense foods, plant based foods, choosing healthy snacks, opting for lean meat and fatty fish, the usual.

Over the course of one day, I probably consume more calories than my husband. I'll see after a few days of keeping a diary. When I think about it, Robert eats all kinds of bad (but tasty) stuff at work....fast food, cookies, candy bars, chips, etc. Yikes, I better NOT be eating calories in those volumes!

I will absolutely check on the thyroid, per the suggestions here.

You could stop drinking the 'sludge' and see what happens. Your weight loss alone may be what improved your BP and blood sugar. Stop drinking it for a month.

IMO too many people are taking meds for BP when they have merely 'borderline' high BP. Every med has a downside -- sometimes more dangerous than the original 'condition'.

Gosh, had no idea that the physical symptoms would last so long. I have had the same " severe" reaction to statins a short time ago. I tried taking them for some days and stopping because of muscle weakness, then starting them again over probably 4 months... only to find out that I really was having a problem with muscle fibers in my blood. That has been two years ago.... blood work for that looks good now, but these muscle aches just keep going on. Have had no medication for those two years and my numbers are 150 I think. I hate all these medical appointments... and getting old.I do wish 'losing weight' WAS one of my problems.... but then, one must be careful what we wish for, right!

Chisue....thanks sincerely for your thoughts, but there's no way I'm stopping my green drinks! I've reaped too many health benefits from them. There's nothing harmful in a fruit and veggy drink....I've always eaten lots of fresh produce.

Today's concoction consisted of a couple handfuls of baby spinach, half a banana, half a cup of fresh pineapple, half of an apple, T. ground flax seed, unsweetened almond milk, protein powder. Deeeeelicious.
    :-)

Consistent weight loss can be caused by internal blood loss. The cause of this can be varied and many - see you doctor. If you are loosing enough blood to cause weight loss, a blood test may show slight anemia and you may feel lethargic at times and tire easily.

A tape worm can cause unexplained weight loss.

Since you like the green drinks (and they do sound good) why not add something like coconut oil (very good for you) or peanut butter or the like that will help you regain or at least stabilize your weight? What you have now is, of course, very low calorie.

Gtreat idea and I do add the coconut oil sometimes....in the drinks and in other things. I wish that I liked it better than I do. :-(

A point that I haven't made clear, I guess, is that the drinks are not instead of solid food, but an addition to my daily consumption. It will be the first thing I have in the morning but I'll be eating something two or three hours later. With the protein powder, a drink could be a meal replacement, but that's not my intention.

This is a pretty recent development, just a few months, I guess. I'm doing my homework and keeping track of what and how much I eat...and counting calories, too. I'm thinking that I might not be eating as much as I think I am.

    Tapeworms???? Wouldn't that be something?

And then lunch...and then a snack or appetizers before supper.

Later this morning, I'll probably have my version of an egg mcmuffin, yum!

You say you are not *substituting* your green drinks for all of your nutrition. However...you will never absorb as much nutrition from liquified *anything* as you would from eating the foods, and the lack of bulk is not good for most peoples' guts. The back and forth between liquid and solid foods may be irritating your gut, too. (For instance, orange juice is good for you, but not AS nutritious as eating the oranges, and lacking the fiber.)

What's your caloric intake without the drink ingredients?

How's your stress level? I lost thirty pounds in a few months about ten years ago while we did battle with a building review board's flighty and illegal demands. (An overweight 138 lbs. to an unhealthy 108. I'm 5' 6".) A whole-body CT found nothing -- except a staghorn calculus, for which surgery had to be delayed until I gained back some weight!

The Senior Me is evidently always going to weigh less (115) than I did in prior years (125). I have some bone thinning due to having to choose between taking a steroid daily (Advair) -- or not breathing.

Chisue, my "drinks " include every bit of the pulp, fiber, and edible skins. That's why I call them sludgies, and why a liquid has to be incorporated while blending the drinks in the NutriBullet.

So, I'm ingesting the whole orange, minus the rind and seeds, but in a pulverized form.

My husband and I started with the sludgies because I felt that we were not getting enough of these essential and nutrient rich foods in our diet. These drinks help with that.

I haven't figured out the calories of the drinks...every day is different. Today's was higher than usual with avocado, yogurt, walnuts, and coconut milk, along with the rest of the goodies (kale, apple, pineapple). It would not be a 'diet ' concoction.

I'm beginning to thnk that the mystery is going to boil down to calories. I'm eating something all day long, it seems, but when I actually start counting calories, I may be falling short.

Due to my genetic predisposition to certain health problems, I must avoid junk food, sugary stuff, empty carbs, and bad fats. I may need to research healthy but calorie dense foods.

I've NEVER been a calorie counter, so it's going to be a day or so before I can figure my food diaries out.

I'm not going to make a doctor's appointment until I can get a better grasp on the calorie thing. I think that all of you caring people will agree with me on that.

Gosh, thanks for the many suggestions. You're the best.
