Cat weight loss and Nutro?

Could it possibly be? My earlier post explained how my cat Moo recently became very, very sick. At first it was just weight loss. The vet did blood work and nothing. By the next Saturday he spiked a high fever and was rushed back to the vet office were she gave him antibiotics, did a urinalysis and took an xray. Other then unexplained sugar in his urine, and what seemed to be an enlarged kidney, he had emergency ultrasound,expecting the worse, again nothing.

Now is this a coincidence? I bought Nutra Natural Weight Control for my overweight cat who grazes on dry food. During this time, I went away for a week, boarding my overweight cat (asthma meds) and left my other 2 to graze on dry (Nutra) and be fed canned only once a day by a friend. When I noticed Moo loosing way too much weight and too many cat throw ups around, I stopped using the Nutra but heÂs been sick ever since. Now I find out that there is a recall on Nutra dry cat food. My vet kind of blew off my concern thinking it was internet junk, but since they canÂt explain his illness, IÂm really thinking I might be on to something. For the last 5 days, Moo has not thrown up and seems to be gaining some weight back, slowly.

There was an earlier post on the Nutra issue, which made me look into this. Where should I go from here? Can anybody find a reputable site my vet might actually believe?

That would not explain the fact that your other cat who stayed home and also ate the Nutra food did not have Moo's problems. Moo might have become dehydrated from eating more dry food and less canned than usual??? Just a guess, but be thankful he's headed back in the right direction. And obviously, I would get that weight control kibble out of their diet.

Excellent point made by lfnyc, although Moo may have been more susceptible due to his recent, unexplained weight loss.

I read your previous post but I am not sure I completely understand the exact chronology of the food change in your cat's diet. The Nutro recall is quite recent and may only explain Moo's recent fever/vomiting episode. Not familiar with the Nutro products, so I don't know if the weight control formula is included in this recall. They say (I quote): Select varieties of NUTROÂ® NATURAL CHOICEÂ® COMPLETE CAREÂ® Dry Cat Foods and NUTROÂ® MAXÂ® Cat Dry Foods with "Best If Used By Dates" between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. Hope you kept the bag. And in doubt, you should contact the company. There is also plenty to read on the internet about this recall.

I know how frustrating it must be not to have a cause for this abnormal weight loss, but at least all the tests came back negative except for this 'enlarged kidney'. So keep an eye on that issue..

Finally joining in... First of all Bobby, it really sounds like you're going in the right direction. When I read your comments from 6 weeks ago to now, you seem to have evolved to eating in a more sustainable way for the long term. I've been following, but instead of starting with the food, I started with the exercise side. I had been feeling that age and gravity were taking too much of a toll. Now that I've been doing "boot camp" for 1 hour, 3 mornings a week since early December, I can see the changes in toning, but it's still hard to get rid of the gut. My instructor said the best results she sees in people is when they cut out wheat products. So that's my next step. I'm not a big sweet or junk food eater, but I do like my bagels, pasta, croissants, good bread... So my plan is for no predominantly wheat products (not going totally gluten-free). I'm not going to worry about everything, or totally diet (I don't believe that works for the long run). Just going to make one change at a time until it's a lifestyle change. I've heard often that it takes about a month to really change a behavior. And that seems to hold true for me, so first, I'm just going for changing breakfast from a bagel w/cream cheese to oatmeal and banana or yogurt or ?? (Breakfast ideas anyone? I get really hungry after the morning workout!)

Lol Bobby! Keep trying darlin! Eileen, 32 miles is impressive. I wish we had some of your weather right now... Good job Pam! 4.5 pounds that was fast! I think I am only down 6 pounds since the beginning of the year. But I am way healthier and my measurements are showing it. I've lost 2 inches off my waist. My pics from the beginning sickened me, but now my tummy is so much flatter! Great job FOAS (thanks Pam!) keep us informed - hope you get the exercise clearance - what a difference it makes in how you feel. Deanna, how did you survive that day? Sometimes, I think you just have to go with it and do your best. And not beat yourself up over stuff. I read recently that you should eat "clean" 80% of the time at first and the other 20% let yourself eat waht you are craving - so you don't feel deprived. There are so many darn theories out there, it confuses me. "Eat more! If you don't your metabolism slows down in starvation mode..." "The only way to lose weight is with a calorie deficit - you're eating too many calories and not working out enough!" "You're working out TOO hard - you need to lighten up a bit and let your body repair!" "All you need to do is WALK - just move." No wonder nobody can lose weight. Who was it that posted the food journal on the Daily Plate? I started using it and am curious to see if I had been eating too many calories ...or if my proportions were off (protein-carbs-fats). Unbelievable! Moo had an ultrasound yesterday. I left him for the day and picked him up late, after work. My vet had the day off so I was told she'd call me first thing this morning. The phone call of doom in my mind. She finally called while I was sitting in traffic this morning. The Ultrasound came back FINE! No tumors, No cysts on the Kidneys, No Obstructions. The urinalysis also came back fine although with a little unexplained suger. I think its those darn Party Mix treats he loves so much, and I give him all the time. (I know, I know but I thought it was his last supper!) I can't believe what wonderful news this is. I cried anyway. So now I still have the problem. Why would he be loosing too much weight? Could it be from switching dry foods a lot this year? Purina one Chicken and rice, to Prescription allergy formula from the vet, to Nupro weight loss formula (I have a very fat cat too)and when Moo got sick, I went back to Purina Chicken and rice. And what caused him to have such a high fever on Saturday? I have to stay in my office all day before going home and giving him the biggest kiss and hug. (NO PARTY MIX!) I have to keep a close eye on him and make sure he gains and not looses the weight. The vet is going to give me another dry food to try to prevent any stomach upset.

I came across your postings while online looking for something else. It sounds like Princeton has had lots of tests, but has he been tested for diabetes? This sounds exactly like what my cat and I went through before he was diagnosed. He was given clavamox and some sort of steroid (I don't remember what it was.) He finally quit eating and became dehydrated. He had to go to the vet and be put on an IV. It was a vet I didn't know because I had moved about 8 months before this started. When I went to visit on the second day, he was sleeping in a litter box and was covered with feces and urine. Needless to say, I took him out of there and took him somewhere else. The second vet diagnosed diabetes and said that it was possibly caused by the steroids he was given. (The first vet gave him steroid shots along with the IV, which may have made it worse or brought it about more quickly.) The second vet said that it was likely that the steroids caused his blood sugar to spike so high that his body gave up trying to produce enough insulin. His blood sugar level was in the 900's which you would think the first vet would have noticed, but I am not sure if they routinely test for that. I don't really know if the steroids were the cause or not, but the second vet was MAD when he got the records from the first vet. Anyway....we've been doing insulin shots twice a day for almost eight years now and he is the picture of health other than being diabetic and now mildly overweight. Once we got him on insulin, he was better in about two days. I am sure they have probably checked for this, but I wouldn't assume anything....might be worth at least asking about. My second kitty is very finicky and she most likely didn't eat much of it, but was throwing up way too many hairballs. She never had them in the past. They ate this from about 3/15 through around 5/10. I do have the bag because I never imagined it would be bad. I now have it all taped up, DO NOT USE, so nobody ever uses it again. BEST BUY 07 26 10 28 and it's Natural Choice Complete Care for overweight or less active cats.

It's too much of a coincidence. Moo has never been sick in 7 years.

I certainly do understand your concerns... yet, the recall does NOT cover those dates. Unless you have the food tested, you can't tell. Could the Vet. Specialist Hospital you mentioned test the food for zinc levels for you? I vaguely remember a thread on the CRF forum about nutro food being linked to sickness, but I can't tell you when it was. I'll try to check it out. I am very sorry about this.

Check the link below if you haven't done so. The only thing to do would be to have the food tested yourself... to really know.
