7 Steps to a Fat-Free Kitchen
With the holidays pending, many of us are looking forward to gathering in the kitchen and celebrating with food, fellowship, and fun. So imagine my hesitancy to write an article with the words "Fat-Free" in the title. This description makes the kitchen sound boring and tasteless. But a recent trip to the doctor left me with a call to action regarding my eating habits. Immediately I wanted to overhaul my lifestyle with one wave of a magic wand, but it doesn't quite work that way.

Brighten up! Dim lighting in the kitchen can make you want to eat more. (A good example of this would be restaurant lighting.) Instead flood your kitchen with light! The recessed lighting, pendant light, and natural sunlight makes this kitchen diet-friendly.
Opt for the blue plate special. The color blue is known for being calming and tranquil, but did you know it also relaxes your appetite and helps you to eat less?
Shrink your plate and shrink your waistline. Consider replacing your larger dinner plates with appetizer plates and your tall glasses with a short juice glasses. You can fill the smaller ones to the brim while still exercising portion control.
Nix the kitchen commute. Having a desk area in the kitchen can be a convenient place to do homework or pay bills. The danger lies in the temptation to snack while working. If you get the urge to munch, stash sugar-free gum in one of the cubbies or simply take your work elsewhere.
Divide and conquer. Buying in bulk is a great way to save on your monthly grocery bill. When you do, be sure to divide food into sensible portions to prevent overeating.
Don't eat while watching TV. Studies show people who eat while watching television eat about one meal more per day. Cooking while watching television is easy when you have an open floor plan. Employ a "no eating while watching TV" policy to curb mindless snacking while you cook.
