Anyone tried the new food vacuum hand tool w/bags?

I've seen it advertised on TV and print. Seems you apply the smallish hand tool to a hole in the specially designed plastic bags and it supposedly removes all the air. Curious if anyone's tried it and your opinion; also, what is price of tool and bags? Thanks!!

Yep! Best 10 bucks I ever spent. I use mine (several times) daily. Bags are a little pricier, but I wash and re-use them. I gave my big ol' expensive Food Saver to a girlfriend that has a family. This Handy Vac is perfect for just me! Mine is over two months old now and still running on the original batteries. I bought one for the office and one for my mom!

I have had one for a couple months and so far find it does what it is supposed to do. I think I paid a little under $10 for it and the bags are around $3-4 per box; 14 qt and 9 gal size. To me it seals better than the large one I have sitting in the closet. I am not sure it would do a good job on something that has a lot of liquid, though. I noticed in the Sunday paper there was a coupon for $3 off....of course, after I had already paid full price!

I reuse them because I start with big stuff - whole roasts or a big bunch of chicken parts. After that stuff has been used, I cut them down (maybe 2" lost?) and use them for smaller stuff like 4 pork chops (after thoroughly washing of course). When the chops are used and bags cleaned, the much smaller bags are used for cooked meat for 2 or for soup parts. After that it's toss time. The bags are expensive but then again, freezer burn is much more costly. I do the same with a ton of yellow onions, then cut down for diced carrots, then for chopped peppers, then bits of herbs. I also use the littlest bags for saving heirloom seeds to plant next year - though those never go into the freezer! There is more of the "outside" sealed edges when I get to that point, but they are still safely sealed and air tight. Perhaps you need to start out with really, really big bags of multiple burritos and progress downwards as they are used? I think I use 2" for each succession, but then, I really stuff everything in terribly tightly to start with yet you may want individual servings - which aren't economical for the volume you use over the year's time. Janiner: Congrats on the new floormate and I agree w Lazygarden's observations. I don't know which one I have, it just says Spin and Scrub on the front. We have had it for about 2 years and I love it, given what it is for and how well it does the difficult task of cleaning tile. We have 1550 square feet of tile (the whole house, including the bedrooms), no pets or kids, and I hate housecleaning, so do as little as possible. But the tile is light, so I still have to do it every 6 weeks or so. The worst is always the kitchen, especially under our restaurant-style thick rubber mat in front of the cooking area. It has lots of holes for things to drop through and can be quite a mess. When we bought the floormate, the sales staff were clear in stating that it was for flooring, but not specifically for grout and that the brushes would only reach the grout if is was very high -close to the height of the tile itself. Our grout is darkish, so it is not much of an issue. Here is a tip for you on a way to pre-clean any really dirty stubborn spots: Go to Sears and pick up a Scumbuster by Black and Decker. This little battery operated hand-held device has rotating scrubbers (and several attachments) that will clean any tile or grout, no matter how bad it is. I love it. For floors, it is still hands and knees (or sit on a low stool or chair, which is what I do). I also use it in the shower, though there is not much to do there, since we don't use bar soap. Back to the floormate, my normal process is to use the stick vac to clean up crumbs and heavier dirt, then the swiffer for dust and to get under things, and then the Scumbuster (only if needed, which is not too often) and lastly the Floormate. While I know the floormate will do dry vac work, I have not found it to be very good at that unless you have a wide open area and not much dirt to get up. I still love this useful device, but am dreaming of the day when we can hire a housecleaning service. We can afford it, but hubby "does not want strangers in the house...." Lynne

Very satisfied Dyson Animal owner here. In a home with two large dogs that shed enough hair daily to stuff another dog, as well as 4 cats, the Animal does the trick! I've had all kinds of vacuums over the years, and the Animal is by far the best at getting all of the hair. The worst was the Oreck. That was traded in soon after purchase as it really did nothing to pick up the animal hair. I know lots of people love them because they are so light to use, however, they don't have a roller/beater, ergo, it only picks up surface stuff. As soon as I started using the Animal, I loved it. I could see not only the pet hair, but everything that vacuum pulls off the floor! Vacuum also has a setting for hardwood or other flat surface. The Animal works well on all surfaces. DH even loves using the vacuum because he can see what he's vacuuming up. I know it sounds crazy, but I can actually get him to run the vacuum for me once in awhile. LOL While Dyson's products are not inexpensive, there are no bags, no odor, just a great purchase. A true workhorse. Worth every penny!

I have two portuguese water dogs (male and female) and use a Rubbermade dog bin purchased from Petsmart. The male eats from a bowl. The female is picky about where she eats and is currently on bowl-embargo. If I put food in her bowl she'll loudly protest and stand over it bark bark barking. Ditto for a plate. If you put it directly on the tile, she's fine. At some point she'll decide the bowl is okay again. The last time she went on bowl embargo she preferred to have her kibble on a placemat. It's probably some form of alpha-dog-logic and she's testing me. Hubs thinks it's because she's crazy. My dogs are counter-surfing-food-crazed beasts. They'll sometimes even swipe napkins from your lap while dining. They ate a whole watermelon...rind included. Couldn't pry it from their mouths. They eat everything. We're on friendly terms with Animal Poison Control and our vet calls them The Indestructibles. In the new kitchen remodel, I'd like to incorporate food storage in a drawer like someone else upstream mentioned. Funny how two furry clowns can dictate so many kitchen and home decor decisions ( dog friendly materials, etc) without voicing a single suggestion. Laughing over all the stories. Pets do make our lives interesting.

I have one too, I bought it a couple months ago. I love it. It works great and the bags can be reused. I store my coffee pods in the freezer in a quart size bage and it still works great after being opened and resealed every other day for the past 2 months. I did get one gal size bag that just would not work though, I'm going to call about it.

I almost bought one last week but wanted to do more research first. I found mixed reviews on line. It seems that it does not work well with large bags. I held off buying because I thought the bags were too expensive. I might change my mind, however. In my store, it was $20 - if it had been $10, I might have bought it any way. I think I would have bought it if it plugged in instead of using batteries.

I bought one and I love it, like most of the comments here, I only paid $10.00 for it. I did make the mistake of trying to put some chicken stock in it and lo and behold it started to suck the stock out of the bag. Won't do that again, but for solids it is great. Vique.

Thanks, Lars, for the link to the reviews. I'm having the same kind of luck with my food saver. I won't go into the problems I've had, it just uses up cupboard space now, I should just throw it out. It's been fixed once for $60 by Tilia, so $10 would be a cheap trial in comparison. Maybe I'll go for it if I happen to see it.
