Where and how to put wood flooring help please

This is basically our house plan. We would like to put in wood. Right now the flooring is all tile. We live in AZ and the tile does cool things off, it seems better for all the dust we get and we already have to it so keeping as much as we can will save money.

I would like to put in wood in the areas I have shaded brown. We won't be floating it. The questions come with that hallway. All the areas I have a question about are still in white.

To the left of the living room is a short step/ledge. That ledge is easy to have a transition from wood to tile. Not really worried about keeping tile there.

The first question I have is what do you think about keeping the tile in the white space? I talked to our realtor who we just bought the house from. She said she thought as long as the wood is similar in color and shade to the tile then we should be ok. I still worry.

The other questions I have to deal with are if the tile is not going to work then just how to we lay the wood? Do we go all horizontal? All vertical? Or do we need to turn it in some way in each of the green triangle areas? And if we turn it then do we miter it and make a diagonal line or what?

One other question. should the wood on one side of the ledge be a different direction than on the other side?

With your plan to not have wood flooring in the hallways, there is no issue of wood meeting wood at any of the thresholds. I would take advantage of that and orient the flooring the way it would look best in each room, rather than be concerned about having it all oriented the same way from a birdseye view.

I'm not sure where you are talking about turning it or mitering it. I don't see any places where that would be necessary and I don't see any green triangles.

And one question: what is going on with the bathroom in the upper left corner that appears to be half wood and half something else?

The corner bathroom - that is a walk-in closet, not part of the bathroom.

So you feel it would be OK to leave the tile in the hallway? It won't seem like things are broken up too much?

With turning and mitering I am talking about where the hall turns only if I need to lay wood in the hallway. If I lay it vertical at the front door then would you continue to lay it vertical throughout the house or would you turn it when the hallway turns? My thought is we would lay everything one direction. Dh thought we should lay it so the wood runs parallel with the hall walls (necessitating a change at the corners), but I am really not understanding why you would need to do that.

with only two 4x4 raised beds, you definitely have way too much. For your tomatoes - you need to dedicate at least a 2x2 area for each plant at the minimum. That means only four tomato plants in the 4x4 raised bed. You **might** be able to plant a row of lettuce/green beans around the perimeter of the beds if you put the tomatoes in the middle. Lettuce & green beans should be space six inches apart from my experience. Peppers typically do not need a 2x2 area - and you will really be stretching it to plant them in a square foot. Best is about 18 inches square for peppers. For your peas - you could put up a pea trellis on the north side of one (or both) of the 4x4 gardening areas for the peas to crawl up. Hopefully they will be taller and be fully finished by the time the peppers and tomatoes take off. Then you could plant green beans in the place of the peas after they are done. Oregano really needs two years to grow and is a perennial. I started some from seed last year and they didn't get very big - but I understand they will take off this year (hopefully). Oregano needs to be left in the same place each year - so it will come back yearly. You can mix-and-match what you would like to grow - but with the cucumbers and watermelon, you could potentially grow those near the end of one of the beds and let the vines go out into your lawn. "I've been told, half jokingly, that every house in New England has a damp basement." Sounds like something a savvy real estate agent would say to a prospective buyer! Regardless of what you put on your kitchen floor, don't live with a damp and moldy basement, it isn't good for you. We fixed curtain drains, added dirt so water would drain away from the foundation, and painted that black goop on it, and finally got the dry basement we needed.

Thank you so much for the tips. I found the number on the inside - the manufacturer is a German company named Geze, which is written on the cranks. The numbers I found are 062939B (I think this is the window model) and the other number is 063030 (I think this is the crank model number.) Sadly, my google search did not turn up anything using these numbers. I did not see a "track" for a screen outside. I saw two small holes, one at the far bottom right and one at the far bottom left of the window, but there were not corresponding ones at the top (e.g. I thought maybe you could hook a screen on with 4 hooks....) I posted about 10 photos in photobucket - you can see the window from the outside balcony opened inward, plus a closeup of the track, and the tilt in and so on. We have 6 of these windows - does anyone have an idea what screens might cost? I am starting to think this is not going to be as straightforward as I had hoped. Thanks again for all advice and suggestions!

OK...so the question is: Can I do it? Yes of course you can. I think the FULL question is: Can I do it without looking BAD? Yes. You can. It is fully acceptable to have different flooring options/colours/presentations on different levels. A basement floor is often quite different to the upper/living/public levels. There is no problem with a wood-look product (faux) in the basement (regardless whether it be laminate or vinyl planks) when real wood is in the living areas. The separation of the stairs is what allows you to do this. The DOOR allows even greater freedom. So long as the PUBLIC space is continuous (visually) then you can do whatever you want in the basement.

The tile is your choice. It's not wrong or right, although I, myself, would do the hallways in wood; and I wouldn't go to the trouble of trying to miter and change direction. I would, however, change the direction of the flooring in some of the rooms. I suggest that you visit some showrooms or take a look at how wood flooring is laid out in other homes to get an idea of what looks good to you. You could also look through the many photos on the Houzz.com web site.

wood gets scratched and dented so i would keep the tile in the high traffic areas.
we put a prefinished red oak in my dining room because it was carpet and the wood looks like hell after 10 years. we don't wear shoes in the house but we have dogs and even with the felt things in the chair bottoms, there are lots of scratches from the chairs.
