What's Orange, Small, Sweet and Spicy?

Drum roll, please......

Little bitty wonders in a jar from Jessy!!

Her kumquats are killers, I mean KILLERS! I think that I am addicted.

We arrived back home last night from St Thomas and there was this neat little box awaiting me which I was too tired to open until this morning. I immediately emailed to thank Miss Jessy for her kindness. I actually said that I'd probably taste them tomorrow because we weren't eating home today.

Who was I kidding? We came home to unpack and those gorgeous little jewels were calling to me from the kitchen. So, out came the lid opener and I promptly popped one in my mouth and released its sweet juicy tang. Than another because I had to have that experience again and before I knew it, another one had leaped from the jar to join it's friends. I had to hurry and close the jar before the rest followed.

I want to put them with something to stretch out the experience. So I am contemplating what that should be. Duck? Ice cream? It's fun to think about while I recover from travel brain.

Jessy, Thank you so so much. You are an angel to send them.

Patty, the tree is on the west side of the house. Here in tucson, I think sunshine should be more than enough. My concern is still that no too much growth on new branches. DocHollywood, your tree looks great and way bigger than mine. It seems that my tree has some issues. One thing is here the soil is clay, very hard to dig. When I planted in the ground, the hole is not very big, which could limit the root system development. I don't know what I can do can help growing new branches. More fertilizer? I think I just fertilized once last year. Probably watering is not enough. Another question is, which season do new branched and leaves grow? only in spring? Fascist, I have only one drip emitter there, watering twice per week. Each time it should be well irrigated. Below is another picture I took yesterday, showing the size of the tree. Many small oranges fell off, but there are still some on the tree.

1. You can leave out the celery with no problem. 2. Yes, they're referring to sweet green bell peppers cut into quarters. 3. You can process in pints rather than quarts. It's always OK to size down but you can't size up. Do keep the time the same. 4. I can't give you an answer on the garlic. This is an unusually weak brine and garlic is in no way comparable to celery. You could acidify the garlic cloves by pouring boiling hot vinegar over them and soaking before adding to the jar but that's still no guarantee of safety. If you want an extra-garlicky flavor, it would be safer to use the single fresh clove and supplement with dried garlic flakes. It's up to you. Carol

I was sick this season so I didn't get to keep the garden size I usually keep, but I do have a -very- limited amount of seed. I've already sourced over 1/2 of it locally. I have enough for 4-5 mailings of 4-5 seeds. I also have the spare postage from the earlier offer to send it out without a SASE. I'll hold 2 of these for ferret/bdan for a while. I had issues with this past offer making other boards and getting a ton of requests from people who were only hording seed. It wasn't a big deal, but there's not enough to go around this time.

Becky, I have cut all my daylilies back as it seems to cut down on disease and gives my nearby roses more room and sunlight (I have a small, California yard). The daylilies start growing back immediately and in a couple of weeks, you have all this pristine green foliage. I also cut them back in late winter or very early spring. This works well for me--I do not know if it is a good or common practice.

I'll have to munch on the kumquats straight again today because.....we are eating salmon burgers tonight, not duck.

bubbe, that looks just beautiful, we have some snow in the forecast here.

Enjoy the kumquats, I made a chutney of some last year and it was yummy. I'll bet, somehow, that kumquats could go with salmon, though.....

Those sound amazing!! I love kumquats. it is a good thing I am the only one in my family that does as they are expensive here. Bubbe, I am trying not to look at that picture of your vacation too much. it might make me hate the ice and snow outside even more.
