Cost of Installing Vinyl Tile

We went to a large flooring store in NJ. We liked a Duraceramic tile. The sample on display had grout lines and a price of about $4.65 / sq. ft for the tile and about $2.65 for installation. I had a sketch of my kitchen and the salesperson said it would be approx. $1100 total installed.

After the store did a pre-measurement of our kitchen, they said that the tiles would cost $770 but the installation would be another $1200 for a total of $1900. This seemed unreasonable as the tile is simply going over an existing linoleum floor just using thin-set. They added extra for the glue, the grout and separate labor for grouting, in addition to actually laying the tile.

Is this an unreasonable cost for installation? Shouldn't the installating be less than the tile cost and include materials? If yes, what percentage is average for a simple floor? Thanks.

We put in Metroflor solid vinyl tiles in our kitchen in 2003. You couldn't get any easier layout than our kitchen, a 14x13 rectangle. The materials were $300 and the labor was 3x that - skimcoating the existing sheet vinyl, then laying the tiles. Because it was the rainy season, they let the skimcoat dry overnight even though they didn't have to.

Remodeling is like that - homeowners sweat over the cost of materials, but the real cost is in the labor. It's why DIY saves money, after all.

I don't regret hiring this job out. Crawling around on the floor on our hands and knees for several hours isn't appealing any longer, LOL. They moved our stove and refrig, and in fact the foreman spent over 1/2 hour re-leveling the stove when they put it back in! He was more meticulous about it than the original stove installers.

it depends on your floor size and labor is expensive. i didn't get a duraceramic quote, but was told it would around the same as for vinyl sheet or ceramic tile because they have minimum charges for labor and i have a smaller floor; perhaps that is the case at your place.

OK then! :) My stupid floors are kind of uneven, though. Does that make a difference for the engineered hardwood? I should add that although we've never had any problems, the previous HO (original HO) did install a basement waterproofing system. It could certainly have been paranoia on her part, and I've never known our sump pump to run in almost three years, but I thought I'd put that out there. Many basements in my area DO have flooding issues, which is why I am somewhat paranoid. The rest of my house is hardwood though, and I vastly prefer that. I have always hated carpet. If you know of any good deals on EH, I'd be very interested in at least pricing it out. Is it something I can install myself?

You new installation will only ever be as good as what is there now. If you are willing to take that chance, then following the above advice should be sufficient. Additionally, if you do not have an voids to fill, instead of patching you can use a liquid primer to facillitate a good bond if the existing tile is asbestos. It its not asbestos, you want to scarify (rough up) the surface with a heavy grit sandpaper to facillitate bond. If there is any wax coating on the existing tile, that wax should be stripped before scarification, patching, priming, or installing new tile.
