NeveDunnRanch, I live in Az too..but I live on the east side Miami/Globe area,..if your temperature drops to freezing at any point, your fish freeze too! We do get snow here for only about 2 weeks... but everywhere around us has snow longer!..still the temperatures stay below freezing...until spring.you would have to figure out how to heat your water tanks for the fish to survive, most mosquito fish do not live more than a year maybe year and a half in slightly warmer conditions only indoors do they last approximately 3 years, guppies last a very long time indoors but they do breed like rabbits, and most other mosquito fish,will breed every 45 days or so, I myself own livestock and have to keep other water loving predators out that want to eat eggs or fish, for livestock I have to hook up a warm water line to have for my livestock...but I ended up having to catch the fish and bring them in for the winter..which prolongs the survival rate on the fish and I don't have to buy new! There are no mosquitoes during winter..and I know it's easier to keep them in the water, but they won't last! THEY are NOT an indigenous species so by law in Arizona you cannot dump them in any lakes or rivers or anything other than what is acceptable to Arizona fish and game guidelines! there's only two places to get them and Arizona fish and game will guide you to where you need to go but most of the people that have them for their pawns, Arizona fish and game take certain information from you..before you can get them..Arizona puts them out in the water canals or flood zone areas of watering farmland and where livestock drink but if we are caught putting them in lakes and river beds stuff like, it's a BIG fine the fish populate so fast they will kill out our own natural indigenous species so Arizona fish and game take all the information down to pick them up if you bring a container you can bring home as many as you can carry in that container there's another person that has them she sells them and I believe she takes the information to and Arizona fishing game will direct you to her too if need be depending on where you're at on the map! MOST IMPORTANTLY....MOST IMPORTANTLY...IF YOU LIVE IN A MOUNTAIN TERRAIN..You will have to stop on your way up back home BECAUSE every so many feet up/miles up..the elevation changes and the pressure becomes harder on the fish and their bladders will burst and you will have dead fish on your way home not many will survive so you have to stop every 10 minutes and weight about half an hour 45 minutes and then travel 10 more minutes and wait another 45 minutes so their bladders do not pop otherwise you wasted time and or money! and another thing the fish will eat the babies the parents will eat the babies if they are confined together in a tight spot so you want to try and separate the babies to keep them safe if you want to make sure you have enough and not buy anymore I have 1 male to three females and I have more than enough babies and I'm going to start selling them now because they do have about 60 babies each time! Momfryhover, It's a tough weather year. I often wonder how the pioneers raised and gathered enough to survive. I know they must have had tough years too, and they couldn't run to the grocery store, farmer's market or restaurants like we can. No wonder they always look so thin (sometimes gaunt) in photos from way back then. Paula, All that hasn't produced well here so far is the broccoli and cabbage, which didn't produce at all, and the sugar snaps, which produced poorly, so I really cannot complain. I'm not so sure what that harvests will be like in July and August though. Well the tree fruit lost everything to freezes or hail, but we had a great year last year and a great year always is followed by a poor year. We're having a very good strawberry year here though. Did your granddaughter's big ole cabbage make a fine head for her school project or was it just too dry for it this year? Jammie, I always feel like I should have planted more bush beans and peas too, especially when the heat cranks up and the production winds down. Don't forget, we can plant pole beans soon for fall and bush beans not long after that! I plant lots of southern peas (purplehulls, cream, zipper, crowder, etc.) to fill the "bean gap" between the last of the bush beans and the fall beans, often called October beans here because that's when the harvest is heavy. You can plant southern peas all summer long through early August. My bush beans are winding down now and likely the harvest of them will end next week, but the southern peas are starting to bloom, and so are the Lima beans. Larry, I know it is frustrating when "life" gets busy and interferes with gardening. I hope life gets a little less hectic so you have time to garden a little more as fall approaches. Kelly, As recently as 4 or 5 years ago, I grew all kinds of winter squash and pumpkins (technically, pumpkins are winter squash) with little problem from squash bugs or SVBs. Now the only ones I can get through the summer are the moschatas. Squash bugs sometimes get the moschata types anyway but not often, and squash vine borers don't mess with them. Seminole is a great native (from Florida) moschata type tear-drop shaped winter squash/pumpkin that I grow with great success every year. If the SVBs ever start bothering it, I'll be so disappointed. You must be reading gardening info from a cooler climate. In the south, squash bugs have two generations and in a few areas with late first freezes and very long warm seasons, they can have three, and I think we see the three generations at our house in southern OK because some years we have squash bugs until October or November if the weather stays nice and warm. Miraje. Ditto what you said about the two generations....and even a third. We see them here throughout the long hot summer. I don't know if that is true for those in zone 6, but it is for us here in zone 7. We always have two generations, and sometimes a third. Today I stepped out the back door and was face-to-face with a deer who was standing in the driveway drinking water from the wildlife puddle I make for the bunnies....and it was 11 a.m.! There's a separate deer drinking pond about 30 yards west but it was dry when I went afterwards and checked it so I refilled it. When the wildlife get hungry, they act oddly...desperate you could say, so maybe it is a small animal eating your plants that normally wouldn't bother them. "My" deer then retreated to the neighbor's woods while I brought the dogs into the house to get them out of the heat, then it went to the compost pile looking for food. After finishing that, it ambled casually down the driveway looking for anything it could find sticking out through the garden fence. This would be typical behavior at twilight or during the night or right around sunrise, but not in the middle of the day in June. I do think this is one of "our" deer, a herd that lives in a heavily wooded portion of our property and which we feed all winter long. It has the mule-headed look of this particular clan, and I bet it is the beast that's eating my tomato plants that are in pots on the patio, and any tomato plant foliage that dares to grow outside the garden fence. We have birds that peck through or squeeze through 1" chicken wire to 'drink' from the tomatoes, and even through bird netting with 1/2" openings. They are really small birds, probably some sort of small sparrow or house finch. All the wild things are desperately hungry and thirsty now and we have a long, hot summer ahead of us. I've also had trouble with turtles eating low hanging tomatoes, and voles and squirrels. Honestly, it is such a battle this year! To make the birds happy, I turn on the sprinkler in the yard for a little while every morning and you wouldn't believe all the birds who come to play and bath in the water from the sprinkler during that few minutes. I try to put it in an area where the grass needs watered (which would be, ahem, everywhere) and where there are fences and trees/shrubs the birds get sit on and enjoy the mist from the sprinkler. I use the excuse I'm watering the ground near the house to keep the foundation from cracking, but (shhh! don't tell Tim) I'm really just doing it for the poor little birds. When the summer is hot and dry, y'all, every single living creature needs food and water and comes to every green 'oasis' they can find, so keep that in mind when things start happening in your yard and garden. You'll see damage from critters that usually aren't a problem. As for our garden production, here's the quick summary: Lettuce and other salad greens, green onions and radishes were great producers. Broccoli and cabbage produced nothing because we hit the 90s in March. Sugar snap peas produced poorly, but at least they produced for a brief period. Potatoes and onions both gave a bumper harvest. We have well over 100 lbs. of each and I've given away a lot of the potatoes and some of the onions because we have more than we ever could eat before they go bad. I've been chopping and slicing onions to freeze for cooking. The last time the crop was anywhere close to this good, I froze enough onions to last us for three years. Since the warm-season crops are still producing, it is too early to say if they will be only average producers this year or good producers, but they're doing all right at the present time. We have a lot of corn and beans in the freezer, and enough hybrid tomatoes that we're giving away plenty. The heirloom tomatoes are not producing heavily but at least some of them are producing (and we greedily devour them and don't give away any heirlooms). Others haven't set a fruit yet. I've kind of decided that any tomato plants that don't have fruit on them by July 1st are going to be yanked out and replaced with hot-weather lovers like winter squash, okra, pole beans (they tolerate the heat but produce heavily in the cooler fall temps), okra and southern peas....and okra! There's no point in continuing to water tomato plants that will not (in fact, can not) produce in the heat we're experiencing. At least okra and southern peas enjoy the heat or at least tolerate it well. The melons and cukes are blooming and are setting melons and cucumbers well, so hopefully the will avoid the diseases they often take them out. (I planted County Fair cukes this year in an effort to overcome the diseases cucumber beetles spread and, naturally, I haven't even seen a cucummber near them, which allows me to think I might be harvesting large loads of cukes. They went in late, after I dug potatoes a couple of weeks ago, so they're just now climbing the trellis.) I think gardeners must be the most optimistic people on earth because we just keep trying to get those good harvests, don't we, even in the face of much adversity? Anyway, despite all the weather and garden trials and tribulations, I am grateful that we haven't lost our home, plantings and property (or livelihood!) to the destructive forces of Mother Nature that have wreaked havoc across the USA this year. Our state isn't aflame, we aren't flooding, and most of us have escaped tornado damage, although hail certainly has been tough on some of our forum members, and so far our Oklahoma ranchers and farmers are hanging tough despite the drought, although I worry about how long they can hang on. Overall, I feel grateful things aren't worse, because the weather and climate seem to be against us this year. It is too bad that knotweed and bindweed aren't edible, because I'm growing a bumper crop of those two....and Johnson grass as well. wow! that is severe pruning even more than the Serena way...it's like one/third of its original size, hee-hee! Something which I have done before...but man, I never thought you'd prune it down that much! I thought I was the only one doing that major of a lopping off... But it does like very aerated and well spaced and since your Platinum is growing so vigorously I am sure it will still end up being quite the giant...especially with all the goodies that you keep feeding your roses with. My roses are bushy monsters right now so you would definitely be hacking them down, but I just let them overgrow themselves and only hack the top parts off... I figure 1st year roses I'll just let them become one massive forest...They're so dense right now, I'd have no idea where to begin! boy, I'm such a chicken-lazy one... I hate to lose that wonderful bushiness and have let my roses become fat, wide and massive...

All of them the exact same standing there in full glory at complete attention. THEY EACH LOOKED LIKE A COMPLETE SET OF MALE GENITALIA. The flag pole and the two boys. It was a giant sea of white serpents. Have I told you yet that his parents are Baptist ministers? His mother was afraid to walk on the stone path leading through, she kept looking back and forth as though she thought one of them were going to jump out and bite her ankles. I do not use leaves as I found they created a slug problem for me. Dying material and a soft environment to slither over. They seem to resent the rougher texture. Last years chips were predominately maple which produced the serpent army, this year it's birch and it's crop are like the Japanese Shitaki mushrooms. Birch chips are my favorite as they smell great (just don't work with them too long after freshly being cut as you can actually be overcome by the fumes, smells like being in a giant soda factory). Like other chips they will dry out but a rain will bring on the fragrance again. I also find that the insect level seems to decrease in the beds when I use them. He raised his head up out of the weeds under the trees, looked at me, then KEPT RAISING UP OUT OF THE WEEDS TO A HEIGHT OF ABOUT 4 FOOT AND CLIMBED A TREE!!!! He stretched out along the branch that hung over my yard. About 6 Feet long! AAAAUGGGHHHH! So, methinks, I'll get you yet! So I go back to the garage to get my son's .22 and some shells. So I come back to shoot him and he's gone. Naturally! So, after I calmed down a little bit, I got back on my mower to finish the yard. (Hang with me here.) I had to mow under that branch, several times, and each time I was craning my neck to make sure he wasn't up there and ready to fall down on me. Unbeknownest to me, DH and DS (who is 13) returned home. DS brought me a cold pop (how sweet, you think). Well, he thought he would be clever and sneak up behind me and surprise me with it. Well, you guessed it. As I was making a pass under that fateful branch, DS tapped me on the shoulder. I thought I was going to die! As we say in Missouri, I nearly "had a cow." I screamed, I cried, I nearly wet my pants. DS thought it was extremely funny. My family has a modest-sized pine bush on the east side of the house. Well, one day I was out there trimming the grass or mowing it or something, and I kept hearing a rustling sound... I turned around and my eyes wided in horror at the pine bush. The whole thing was covered with pinesaw worms (or something like that) - these long, green caterpiller like things would cover the stems and sorta blend in, but they'd all squirm and wriggle at the same time. The result was as if the whole plant was a Medusa - a slithering, ghastly mass of snake-like worms. HORRID!! Fortunately, a good dose of insecticide kills the dang things, but it was a pretty revolting sight to see. You just don't expect to see that many bugs on a plant, and they were all green so they blended in... until they moved... --- Spiders: Normally, I don't mind them, but there's a particular kind that I've seen around on the east coast that gets in houses now and then... it's large and black, and while not one of the dangerous, biting types, it is still nasty and bold. Unlike most spiders, if you try to crush it, it will jump at you, or run away with astounding speed. Just a real pain in the neck, especially when they jump off walls and such. --- Mushrooms: I just hate mushrooms. I don't know why, exactly, though my family always had a problem with mushrooms and gross toadstools growing in the soggy, shady area of the yard near the drainage ditch. I just hate nearly all of them. They're nothing but decay, feeding upon death, and they have all sorts of gross and unnatural behavior... puffballs that unleash clouds of spores, bloated, revolting mushrooms that kill all the grass around them, etc... and the big ones STINK! when cut with a lawnmower or whatever. Please, please, it's a bonafide one that I just remembered. When my brother and I were young our little sister was a real pain in the ____. The type of kid that would sneak up behind you when you were watching TV, rip a hunk of hair out of the back of your head and then run and tell your parents you were beating on her. Which resulted in you getting smacked! Well one day when my brother and I were playing out in the front yard she was really harassing us so of course we started to chase her. She was so busy running while looking backwards that she had not realized she had cleared our property line and was now entering the neighbors. The neighbors with the really really big dogs.Well before you knew it she hit the biggest, juiciest, pile of St. Bernard's crap you ever saw. That poor dog must of had alot of grease that night as man was it loose. As soon as she hit it she went down like a baseball player sliding into home plate. Too this day I can still see it in slow mo in my mind. My brother and I started laughing so hard, she cried all the way home and we presented her to mom with us still laughing our butts off. What was mom's response? "Oh you think it's funny, well lets see how funny you think it is when you clean her up!" And we had to. EEEWWWWW!!! She stunk so bad! The hair on the one side of her head was slicked back like some greaser from the 50's, she even had it in her ears. Man it was horrible. My brother wanted to throw her in the pool but we remembered she still couldn't swim that good. Seriously we were pondering the thought but were afraid that if we had to fish her out in an emergency move we might not be able to get a good grip on her because she was so slippery. (Heh the minds of a 10 & an 11 yr old). We opted for the complete strip/garden hose technique as we were in enough hot water. So if any of you ever cross paths with my little sister and she starts to get on your nerves just use this little question "Is it true your nickname as a kid was stinky?" I looked up to see a hawk flying away, with a recently caught ground squirrel dangling from his talons! I threw stuff in the pail a few weeks ago and a mouse jumped up about a foot from inside the pail. Nearly gave me a heart attack. While I was pondering how it got in there and what I was going to do about it, my husband came home (HEHEHE). Told him I had a problem with my garden pail and stood back. It's ok, he does not have a heart problem, at least not that I know of. LOL... Anything to do with maggots or snakes is bad enough, but those *gigantic* Missouri slugs pretty much do me in. First time I saw one I started screaming "SNAKE SNAKE" at my hubby. Those suckers are so big, you can't step on them. I can't even bring myself to salt them they so nasty. YOU SHOULD HAVE MARRIED A PARK RANGER!)= Everyone in the water including 9 snakes. (Ever seen someone levitate before?) Beaver attacks boat, but only stern of boat where husband sits. (He wouldn?t let me steer the boat anymore once he figured out I steer towards the snakes) Husband on hike goes to pee off the side of the trail into a ditch and a deer runs out of the woods and knocks him over. Mountain lion follows us up trail Mountain lion follows us down the trail until a BEAR shows up. Tiger swallowtails at a 'puddle club' fly up and circle his head and manage to stick a butterfly foot into his eye.. you guessed it, eye becomes infected. Bet you didn't know that the majority of frogs can't make it through the laundry from start to finish. The rpms in the spin cycle literally rips them apart. Found that out a few times. Totally gross! Although tree frogs are a bit more durable wash wise, it's the dryer that finishes them off! You find them shrink wrapped like some ancient Colorform on the drum wall (and they don't peel off easy). It was the gifts from my son that finally taught me to check pockets before doing a load. It was especially a relief after having spent yesterday morning at my sister-in-law's, in her fabulous garden as she casually picked off beetles from various rose bushes and other plants and proceeded to smash or vivisect them in her BARE HANDS! EEEWWW! And she was doing it like it was nothing. Of course so many times I've read gardening experts say that before you resort to using chemicals you should try the hand pick method. But besides her, I've never actually SEEN someone doing it and with such gusto. My hand was instantly covered in tiny baby spiders. Thanks for the laughs. My garden Heebie Jeebies has to do with snakes. I used to be terrified of them, but since we built our house in the middle of 50 mostly wooded acres, I figure they were here first and am trying to cope. I can handle most of them but when it comes to the poisonous copperheads I draw the line. One day i decided to divide a daylily that had ajuga growing all around it and reached down to pull some of it back so I could see what I was doing. Well I guess the little copperhead under there thought I was trying to pick him up, and it bit me on the left pinkie.(they are poisonous) Can you say PANIC! Since I was home alone, I called the nearest neighbor. She said she would take me to the ER , but since her little ones were asleep, I decided to drive myself to where my DH was working not knowing if I was going to get sick or what. He took me on to the ER. I didn't die . LOL, just had to get a tetanus shot and had a swollen and painful hand for about a week. So I figure I can survive a bite but I still don't like them. This summer I was in the garden with my dog Keebler ( named for the Keebler Elves because he was a stray born in a hollow tree). Anyway, he gives his ?someone is here? bark but with a low growl at the end, so I come to check it out and there is a LARGE Shiny copperhead on the front walk. I went to get the hoe and when I got back I couldn't see it, but figured it went under the bush next to the walk. Couldn't flush it out with the hoe, so went for the 22. Still couldn't see it but shot into the bush anyway. It pops it head out and I shoot it. Sure I killed it with the first shot. But since snakes have a habit of wiggling for a while after they are dead. I target practiced for a while. When I related the snake story to my DH, he asked if I shot it in the head. My reply was, yes and everywhere else. He chuckled. It didn't have what I was searching for, but I can't tell you the last time I laughed that hard. I was telling my h about it when we got into bed last night, and I kept telling him stories as I remembered them. We were lying there, only 1 lamp on across the room, peacefully giggling about the creepies in the stories when suddenly something small jumps up and is flying for us on the bed! I screamed and yanked the covers up, trying to fend the creature off...... Just then I realized it had made a noise just before landing on my husband. Gee, it sounded like our cat. Now, our cat is not allowed in our bedroom because of my allergies. She has the upstairs of the house to herself and our big dogs have the downstairs. (She hates them. They love her and don't understand why she doesn't like them.) But she apparently gets lonely and feels left out so she crept across the living room and was sneaking into our bedroom. Once we finished laughing hysterically, I told her she needed to announce her presence BEFORE jumping on the bed like that. No response. I called her and cooed for her, no kitty. She had been so scared by my screaming that she had turned and run back through the living room (dog territory) and back upstairs! My h went to check on her and she huffily informed him that she was not amused, that she had lost one of her 9 lives to my scream, and that she was NOT going to grace us w/ her presence again tonight. Of course, tomorrow is another day.....
