Stair runner question

So after almost 3 years in our new home, we've decided that we need to put a carpet runner on our beautiful oak staircase - mostly because of dogs and senior citizens feeling insecure on the slippery wood. The house has an arts & crafts look to it (even though it's new), so I'd like to find something in that style for the staircase. However, roll runners are very limited - unless you want to spend $70-80/linear foot. I was wondering if anyone has ever used a regular runner - or actually 2 or 3 - instead of a roll runner, cutting off the border at each end and ending each piece at a discrete (under the stair tread) location. I have so much more choice if I'm going that route. Two 12' runners should do it, with only one seam to hide somewhere in the middle. Any thoughts on this approach? Thanks!
