Types of Curry?

Vacuumfreak's post got me thinking - I recently had Vietnamese food and one of the dishes we ordered was a curry dish. Another time we had Indian food and again, most of the dishes were based on curry. The dishes couldn't have tasted more different! I realize the other ingredients also lended particular flavors, but I'm finding while I love Indian food, I like the curry I've had at Southeast Asian restaurants a whole lot better. I'm wondering if it's the coconut milk that most of them seem to have in them as well.

I'm stumped when it comes to curry overall, however. I have gotten a few "curry" combos from Penzey's but was wondering if anyone here is more knowledgeable about curry powder and what the differences are throughout different cultures. I realize "curry" can be anything - there are so many different spices in them it all depends on what you like and some dishes are simply called curry. But still, I'd love to find out what the ingredients in the Vietnamese/Malaysian/Thai dishes I've had are compared to traditional Indian curries.
