Improving existing AC system

I have a ten year old Carrier 3 ton system that has had reasonable maintenance over the years. The air handler was rebuilt last year, new blower, cleaned coil etc. Our utility bills have been quite high over the last couple of summers. The house is about as well insulated as I can make it including new windows etc. Short of upgrading to a newer more efficient system, can I do anything to my existing one? Can it be fixed up to operate better, re-built or improved? I'm wondering about the ductwork being ten years old also. Like most folks we are getting by financially, but really need to make do with what we have wherever we can.
