That was caused by not seasoning at a high enough temperature......all you accomplished with your seasoning attempt was to create an oil removable coating on your pan. That is not the same thing as actual "seasoning". Next time you you re-season your pan with Crisco, do it a higher temperature.....350 degrees is NOT HOT enough. For best results you need to use a temperature that is ABOVE the smoke point of your seasoning oil (Crisco in your case).....use a 450/475 degree temperature instead. Make sure you put a VERY thin/light coating of "melted" Crisco on your "warm" skillet. You do not want the Crisco to be puddled or in a thick layer anywhere on your skillet. Again, use a very thin layer and place in a hotter oven. You will have to do this coating/baking procedure several times for the pan to develop a real nice durable seasoning. Dan

My father smoked.....heavy all of his life. He died at 64 from heart aneurysm....his father died of the same at 72. I was daddy's little girl...with him as much as possible. I would lay with him on the couch when he would take his 'noon nap', ride in the tractors with him..smoking, we would take Sunday drives..he was smoking in the closed up car. I started smoking at 12...lightly, was smoking regularly at 16. When I was 19, my lung collapsed completely. Dr. told me that I needed to stop smoking....I was smarter than the Dr.! HA The 2nd time it collapsed Dr. told me that I HAD to quit, I cut back dramatically. The 3rd time, Dr. told me I had 2 choices....quit smoking and walk out of the hospital, or continue smoking and they could just leave all the tubes and oxygen on me and stay in the hospital. Well...I quit at that point. I had the corrective surgery on my lung when I was 21. At that point, the specialist asked about family smoking. He said that there was a thought that it was a lung defect, and if you had it, it would generally show up at 19 when the lung was done growing. I was a small baby, and dad was a heavy smoker. Dr. said those were the 2 biggest against my lungs. Of course, I never told my dad this...it would have broke his heart to think that he might have been a cause to all the pain I went through...and still have.

You won't be able to wash that crud off. I had to put a clause in my leases about not burning 'dirty' candles, had two walls turned into a slimy mess in one house from candle soot. The tenant managed to get most of it off (plaster walls). They lived there only a year, but it was not easy getting that off, I can't imagine 32 years worth! The only other suggestion I have is try a good oil-based sealing/blocking primer. I had to use that before I could repaint, and it's also what I used in my bathroom when the wallpaper glue residue wouldn't come off the wall (even with a palm sander). The oil-based primer worked well, that was 5 yrs ago and latex top coat I put on is holding just fine, not compromised at all.

The warning label is actually pretty good. It nicely summarizes exactly what you need to know. The SDS is more detailed and fun to read, if you are into that kind of thing. But most consumers don't need that. I agree that the letters are small, and that can be problem. But there simply is so much information that they want to give and only relatively little space. If in doubt, you should assume that any cleaning supplies are potentially harmful. More often than not, that's probably true. If that isn't good enough and you really need to read everything, I have found my cell phone to be much more useful than a magnifying glass. Take a picture and then zoom in. Or even better, look at the picture on your computer screen. Then you can make all the letter really big.
