Thanks for your comments. Yesterday I tried to climb the roof that is at 45 degrees to seal the flashing. But I finally gave it up because it is too difficult to climb it. The shingles have sand. It is very slippery. I will call a roofer to handle it though it is probably not difficulty to fix the problem, sealing it because by further carefully check the top of the furnace pipe in the attic; I did see light through on one side. The water must drop from there. I can fix the problem but I am unable to climb the roof at 45 degrees. Though I will call the roofer, I would like to hear what good ideas you have to climb the roof. If one uses a Harness, he still needs to climb to the top of the roof and nail on it before he can use it, right?

Thanks zl700, I think it is probably convection current as it is very mild and mostly coming out the top slots rather than the sides. I didn't see any place in the heat exchanger area where there was any strong air coming out of cracks - it just seemed to be heat radiating from the flames visible at the burners. I also noticed while checking it out that my fan limit controls were set very high - about 115 deg for off and 140 for on. I suspect this was also further heating up the crawl space by keeping more residual heat in the exchanger between cycles. I adjusted them down to 85 for off and 110 for on to scavenge out more heat. I'll probably have it looked at next year after I see how the remodeled house performs over all four seasons. There's also an air conditioner unit above the furnace that hasn't been working or needed in at least 10 years, but with significant changes to the house (roof changed from light to black, stories changed from 1 to 2, more windows) I need to see if A/C is actually needed or not.

I agree with all the posters. That is the worse garbage install i've ever seen. I guess your code boys are just brain dead. Could be you have no codes. Your vent on the roof will NEVER draft properly in a million years, eat the shingles because of acid fumes,and could be a fire hazard. Even your gas pipe install is totally garbage and illegel. Tinmantu is dead on. No way in hell is that vent supposed to touch any combustable material. I guess you live in a no code zone and anything goes until 3 people are killed. If i did that install up here i'd be out of business, my licence pulled, sued, and probably in jail. That includes the gas piping. I feel for you. We were told in school that the U.S watches our codes. We set most of your gas and electric codes. Just takes you guys years to catch up and i think you need three code related deaths before there is a change, might be five. Can't remember. Bottom line is if your home was in Canada with that install the house would be locked off untill all code infractions were repaired and the installers were jailed or out of business. Well not jailed but out of business or forced back to school with a major fine. Here is how it works up here. I make one mistake with venting or gas i pay $150.00 for a new inspection. Make another mistake on the same home i pay $500.00 for the inspection. I make a third mistake on the same home i lose my licence and have to go back to school and pay a $1000.00 fine. As i said before, i feel for you. You want to know what a gas code or electic code is, come up here. I can't believe most of you people are still alive. Is this a conspiracy on their part ? Canada is an elected dictatorship but our codes protect people. Can't say the same for the entier U.S. Some states have it right on. Some haven't a clue. Just one man's opinion.

My then 7 year old son and I removed the original tile from our breakfast room, family room, utility room and master bath. You could hear some places where it sounded hollow underneath, so we were confident it would not be a problem there. We were amazed when much of it came out in strips! My son just said that was one of the most fun things he's done, but we did leave a few spots for the new floor pros to have to chisel out before leveling. The tile they put down in the family room and kitchen came out when we put down wood, and we had that all done professionally. I knew it had been put down properly and wasn't going to be as easy. I would have been willing to do a smaller area, but when you have them coming in to do the rest of the work, they just don't charge that much to do the take out. If your question is more to the mess than the DIY aspect, I wouldn't be too concerned. The tile will break up and there will be some dust and lots of smaller pieces, but it generally goes fairly quickly, especially if being done with a power tool designed for the job. The tile is heavy and the edges can be sharp. You have to wear protective gear and be prepared for the disposal. Turning off AC is good for any demo work, but it will settle down fairly quickly -- not near as bad as drywall.
