New furnace/ac or wait?

We are looking at getting a new furnace but are concerned that things are made the way they used to be. Maybe this is a "don't fix it if it isn't broke" situation.

Our furnace is a Carrier Weathermaker at 15 years old, single stage, 92%, and we think too loud for our home or oversized. The a/c is 22 years old. We have lived in this house for seven years without a problem with either other than comfort and noise. We are in western PA.

We would like more even temps and a quieter furnace. Our current furnace works great but it kicks on only in one stage (high). We would also like a furnace where we can run the fan all the time with no worries.

Our house is 130 year old Victorian with decent ductwork (so they say). 2200 sqft living space, high ceilings, and lots of large windows. Half the windows have been replaced and we plan on replacing the other half. There is nothing special yet on insulation but the home has asbestos/cement shingles, which is a good insulator.

What does everyone think?

I will say that if we install a new furnace/ac and have problems, in spite of any comfort improvements, I will consider the decision a mistake.
