Suggestions to replace our oil back-up furnace?

Hello folks,

I usually post in the gardening forums, but am venturing over here in hopes that you wise folks can offer some help.

Our heating system in our 50 year old house consists of a heat pump and an oil furnace back-up. We keep our thermostat at 68 when we are away and at night, and at 72 when we are at home. Not long after we moved in last year, we had to replace the ten year old heating coil to the tune of $3,000. In November, when we filled up our 500 gallon oil tank, our bill came to $1500. And that's just for Nov-Jan. We have to top it off again for Feb-March and are terrified of the potential bill.

Given the cost to run the oil furnace we're keen to explore other options for a back-up to our heat pump. Any suggestions for clean green solutions to our quandary? Unfortunately, our neighborhood is not connected to any natural gas companies - those who want gas use propane tanks. I wonder if an electric back-up is even a possibility, particularly given the characteristically 'weak' warmth from the heat pump.

We're a young couple and this is our first house - are we just naive about the costs to heat our home? Short of replacing the whole system, is our only option to stick with oil?

ANY thoughts/suggestions/replies are GREATLY appreciated!
