Cherry Garcia...I couldn't wait!

Okay, I don't have ice cream for breakfast very often. Actually, I think this may be the first time, now that I think of it! LOL

Since I bought the Ben & Jerry's book in Chicago, and got the ice cream maker from Tracy, and posted the Cherry Garcia recipe for Beachlily...I have been dying to make some ice cream!

So I bought some frozen sweet cherries at the grocery store, then got the bowl all nice and frozen, and made my first batch of ice cream in my new ice cream maker!

Cherry Garcia is my favorite, so it was only fitting that it was my first batch. It turned out great, and will be even better when I can use fresh bing cherries!

Next batch will be Maple Walnut. My neighbor brought me a bottle of maple syrup he made from his own mapll trees the other day. I am going to make a batch of Maple Walnut ice cream and give it to him. I think he'll like that!

Gotta go finish my "healthy" breakfast! LOL

Excuse me? Just who do you think you are? Posting a picture looking that good with my favorite ice cream... but no recipe (LINKED BELOW).

Probably everything falls under the category of things I thought I'd never be growing from seed . I was not a gardener at all before WSing, and it was actually WSing that started me on my Indoor-sowing of some things. But every year, because I've noticed some things that said "difficult to germinate" on the package, yet found they gave me little to no problem in WSing it, I always pick at least one "challenging" type of seed each year to see what happens. This year, I'm WSing a couple types of Jack-n-the-Pulpits, Burning Bush (Euonymous, spelled something like that), and either late winter or Spring Sowing Big-Leaf Magnolia. In the past, I've done Ligularia and didn't realize it had germinated, yet it kept growing in the spot where I put it. It grew to a nice size last year. I Spring and Summer Sowed Bay Laurel and Gardenia back in 2005-2006, and the plants are still alive and kicking, and doing well. I bring both of them indoors when it gets cool. Then there's the plight of the Cherry, Cranberry, and Blueberry seeds. Still haven't suceeded in those and I'm taking a break from them this year, because I don't really know where I want them in the yard anyway. And may just find out they've been growing in my yard wherever I dumped the unsprouted container contents. Linda

Ashok, I too remember Black from Tula as one of the best tomatoes I've ever tasted, but the last time I grew them, the squirrels got most of them. That, and Pink Caspian, had bites in them while green. The next year I grew more cherry tomatoes, so that even if the squirrels did eat some tomatoes, I wouldn't notice and there would be enough for all. Last year, they left my heirlooms alone! So now I'm emboldened to try the irresistible BfT and PC again. Penny, I've wondered who buys all those early seedlings. Does everyone else have a greenhouse? The place where I found mine, OSH, always has tomatoes in February, and they have a free replacement policy, so last year when the first two seedlings died in the cold, I got free replacements (so they are, in a small way, subsidizing my experiments in winter tomato culture). Of course that did mean another visit to OSH (more temptation), but surely if lots of people brought them back, they'd stop selling them so early? Or maybe the plants are so cheap ($1.29) that most people don't bother to bring them back? Still, I'd think selling plants that are bound to die would be bad for repeat business. And OSH does not sell walls-o-water.

Matt, You question surprised me because I knew that you already knew the standard answer....and you also knew that you have the know-how/experience to succeed with a mid-summer planting. But, if hearing some of us say 'go ahead' makes you feel better, then I'll say it again---go ahead and do it. Joellen, The reason many containerized trees often do not do well and/or have a high failure rate is because they start out with a tiny amount of roots in comparison to topgrowth. I'm a backwards tree and shrub planting person. Most people want to plant the largest tree or shrub they can afford to buy, but I want to plant the absolute smallest ones available. Why? I want root growth that is adequate to support the top growth. When we planted trees around our newly constructed home which was in what was essentially an old cow pasture, we dug up oak seedlings from the woods and transplanted them up around the house. At the time we dug them, most of them had a 12" or bigger root ball and the trees themselves were 4 to 12" tall. In about nine or ten years, most of those trees have grown to be over 15' tall. Some are close to 20'. I'm a big believer that smaller is better when planting trees since it gives you a more evenly balanced tree. Bareroot plants do great if planted in fall or winter so they can establish roots before the summer heat arrives. Dawn

Linda, it looks yummy to me and I agree, it's a healthy breakfast. It has milk, eggs, fruit....why, it's practically health food!

Now I'll wait for the Bings to ripen here too. Oh heck, I might not, I have some frozen from last year.

That looks so good. Chocolate and cherries, what a combination.

I have two of the freezers in a closet that I bought for gifts when they were on sale. Now I am thinking of gifting myself.

That is one thing I plan on buying as soon as they come into the stores here for summer, an ice cream maker.

Is there a recipe for Chunky Monkey in that book too?

CG is my favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor. Luckily for me I only eat ice cream in the summer. It makes me too cold at other times of the year. I used to be able to polish off a whole half pint if the situation warranted it, but no more, that was back in the day when my job was running (literally) a wilderness outpost.

Linda, that is so very tempting! The first ice cream I made with that little machine was butter pecan. Why in the world didn't I know that that stuff was so easy to make?

Man-o that looks good! I made my inaugural batch of ice cream last night. Vanilla. It was SO easy! We ate some immediately although it was pretty soft. I actually like it soft so I was happy. It was YUMMY!

I put it in the freezer of course and took a taste this morning. It was perfectly firm like REAL ice cream - how exciting is that! I'll scoop some out and take a picture tonight.

Next up: Coffee, my favorite ice cream flavor.

Love Cherry Garcia.

The other one I really like, but I seem to be in the minority, is the Willie Nelson Peach Cobbler something or other. I can't never remember it's entire name.
