How does your garden grow?

DH and I were out in the veggie garden tonight and I'm sooo disappointed! We have loads of teeny tiny green tomatoes. HUGE summer squash. Baseball sized cabbages, bolted broccoli and spinach. Peppers are teeny and the pole beans are just starting to flower. Beets did nothing worth writing home about. We've picked lots of zucchini and cukes, but the other types of squashes are all tiny still. The only thing we've consistently been able to pick is lettuce, and it's still going strong.

We got only a few raspberries (the dogs ate most of them that actually fruited) and no blueberries. The pear tree will have a bumper crop, however. I've noticed that the blackberry bushes around everywhere are loaded with puny little green berries...they'll never get big & juicy at this rate.

We're hoping we get an Indian summer...it's been unseasonably cool this year. I don't think we've been to 90 yet at all this year. My flowers love it, but if we had to live off our land for food this year, we'd be going hungry!

I am not growing a garden for the first time in many years. We decided to eradicate wild berries taking over our garden/land instead. . It has been hard not having a garden this year but hopefully worth the wait. Meanwhile we are supporting other gardeners at our Farmers Market.

We're in the same boat as Goldie. No garden for us this year, due to too many other activities, etc. going on - just didn't want to spend the time on it this year. We, too, are supporting local farmers and my dad is having a good crop of tomatoes (sharing with us). We've been eating lots of yellow squash, zucchini, cukes, tomatoes, okra, and green beans. Cantaloupes just about daily. We did have a very hot spell early which apparently affected the corn crops in our area. I've not yet found some really good, sweet corn (prefer silver queen). Had some that's not bad, some that's okay, some that's pretty good, just not really good yet. Still looking!

As for flowers, etc. we have been lucky for a period on our rainfall. No drought this year (so far). Rain in early July pulled us out of the deficit, even gave us a surplus. Roses, etc. are loving the high temps. Others, are doing well but I'm really having to keep things watered. My bouganvillea (sp) has been beautiful!!

Thanks raimeiken, glad you like the amaryllis. I got it as a single radish-sized bulb in 2000. It's actually in a large pot although you can't see it from the pics, I just noticed. I've split it several times and love to share it out. It's slow to get established but once it settles in it just grow and blooms and grows and blooms. Awesome new pics, Kevin--you grow a lot of really great plants. I love all of the brickwork too. Nice captions/narrative too. Thanks for taking the time to post all of the pics! Just for fun, here's a quick pic along the east side of the house: And a fun six-pointed stapelia seedling from my hand pollination of stapelias (S. grandiflora x S. gigantea). It's not super unusual to get an occasional 6 pointed flower instead of the usual 5 pointed ones, but it's still fun when it happens. Some leaf lettuce seedlings, and ferociously-blooming "Mexican heather" (Cuphea hyssopifolia) along with some I'itoi bunching onions in my little round veggie bed. Hi, My garden is exploding with all this rain. Everything is so lush and green including the weeds. I grow mostly perennials, i.e., daylilies, peonies, phlox, lilies, etc. It's safe to plant annuals now and I'm going to make up some hanging baskets this weekend. Lisa West Newfield, Maine

No garden for us this year, either. This is the first year in memory that we just didn't have the desire to take on the challenge. Considering the way the weather has been, I believe it's a good thing. The high heat and humidity, coupled with near-drought conditions, has been enough to knock the stuffing out of even the most hardy.

Last year for my birthday hubby and I bought two recreational kayaks, which is where you'll find us on most days that yard work isn't on the list of chores. Even with the low water levels, we've had some wonderful treks. We yakked the Great Swamp in nearby Patterson last weekend and it was spectacular, even with the lower water levels and the vegetation choking parts of the waterpath. This coming weekend we have plans to visit the Bashakill in Orange County (we're in the lower Hudson Valley of NY).
The water levels are slowly rising with the recent rain and thunderstorms in our area.

We also support our local farmers, buying from either or local (and organic) farm that has a small market or a close neighbor who's a farmer.

It's been a hot (and mainly) dry Summer here in New Mexico. I'm not growing veggies as they really need afternoon shade here and have to be grown in a walled garden to keep them away from the many nibblers out here. I am growing herbs (rosemary, parsley, sage, thyme, lemon balm, chives, basil, etc.) which are doing ok. And, lots of flowers, which are up and down. I pulled out 2 tea roses and a climber that had been struggling for a few years now and planted 2 yellow floribundas in their place. They're just now starting to rebloom. I'm starting to think only cacti, sunflowers and weed like this weather we're having . . . I sure don't!
