October 2014 how does your garden grow?

Hi all,

I don't know about you, but I LOVE October weather--warm days and very pleasant nights, plus plenty of plants really perking up with the cooler temps. Even my outdoor aeoniums look less cranky, hah!

What's looking good/bad in your garden? Here's a couple of things looking good in mine: a pot of hollyhock seedlings sown just under three weeks ago, and one of several clumps of Mirabilis multiflora (western four o'clock or Colorado four o'clock) .

Late September early October is my favorite time for starting hollyhock seeds since it's not SO hot that the pots dry out while I'm away at work for the day, lol, and yet it's warm enough that the seeds sprout quickly. I'll plant them in their permanent locations in a few weeks and some will bloom in late winter/early spring and the rest will do so each spring thereafter. Such fun plants.

In any case, let us know what looks good/bad/awful in your garden too!

Happy gardening,
Grant
