I very seldom clean my hardwood floors, but I vacuum them frequently using the floor brush attachment. If the grooves are filled with dirt, they are going to stay that way.

I use a weak solution of vinegar water on my oak floor...maybe 1/4c to a gallon. The floor is natural (no stain) and I use a special mop the floor company gave us. It uses a double twist method clockwise and counter clockwise so there's little wetness. And the added vinegar helps to clean it and dry it faster. I hate mopping but I love the ease of this. As far as your travertine, the acid in vinegar might damage your travertine.

I also have read that Murphy's will "ruin" hardwood floors, in that it leaves a residue that prevents a new finish (when you are ready to refinish) from adhering. I was sick when my wonderful house sitter cleaned my Swedish finish floors with it. I also read it can soften/cloud the finish. I never was able to read/find what to do to try to undo the damage. They are fine now and it's been maybe 10 years, but don't know if they will ever be able to be refinished. ETA: here is something I found that might help: If you have solid hardwood with a urethane finish, using products like Murphys Oil Soap or Orange Glo can create a cloudy residue. To remove the residue, clean with a 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 water solution and a damp sponge -- Not overly wet. THEN dry with clean towels. rebeccamomof123 your floors are lovely. If you like the way your floors look, I wouldn't have them refinished now. You know now that when the time comes you'll have to completely refinish them, but there's no reason you have to rush into it since they obviously are in good shape. I'd stop using the steam mop and Murphy's and start using the damp microfiber mop. We had oak floors refinished in our last house and I used Bona and the occasional steam mop. After 6 years, the satin poly was starting to wear thin in a few spots. Our new hardwood floors are waiting to be installed right now and I don't plan to ever use the steam mop on them!
