Comments (6)Laney, Your menu sounds perfect. What you didn't mention was whether you were preparing the soup at her location or transporting it. I'm guessing she is at school in Canada and its going to be cold coming in from the recital. When I was in Ontario I noticed that even Campbell's soups had packaged soups in boxes Squash bisque, tomato bisque. You could pour that stuff into a crockpot maybe add sherry and green onions before the concert and it would be ready to serve when the group comes in from the concert. I would serve it in cups. the rest of it sounds great. I have noticed cake eaten less these days, and at a recent shower they didn't have one. They had brownies with Reese's pnut butter cups baked in. I do like Gellchom's idea about musical themed paper goods or cakes, but maybe cupcakes....See MoreGraduation Gift - Military Academy bound
Comments (11)I have no experience with West Point but my husband is a Naval Academy grad and we are currently sponsoring several midshipmen (basically we are their home away from home). Plebes (freshmen) are extremely restricted on what they are allowed to have in their rooms when it comes to personal items. Basically NO personal clothes aside from undergarments - only clothes issued by the school. For example, they have gym gear (shorts & tshirt) that they are allowed to wear at our house when not in uniform but unless they are not leaving our house, they must be in uniform. They can leave personal items at our house and wear them IN our home, but not if they go somewhere, like the movies, to a restaurant, etc. my garage is stacked with personal items that belong to two of our mids (who are now sophomores) that they either can't have or don't have room for in their rooms. They can't bring their own bedding, etc either. I'm fairly sure West Point has similar rules especially for their plebes/freshmen. My advice would be to give him money. Because they are unable to work in college, including in summer, they have no way to earn money. They do receive a stipend but it is very minimal. I know our mids would very much appreciate cash. I imagine West Point cadets would feel the same....See MoreH.S. Graduation gift
Comments (12)I don't think it's necessarily bad that she isn't headed straight for college. It's difficult to know at 18 what you want to do with your life. I know many, many people with crippling student loan debt right now because they felt like they had to go to college, and they often picked majors that, in hindsight, weren't the best choices. I don't know if anyone has priced out colleges recently but they are extremely expensive, even state schools. I graduated 10 years ago and tuition costs have raised considerably since then. Tuition increases are outpacing pretty much anything else in the economy, and it's really becoming a problem when young adults graduate thinking they did this great thing only to have trouble finding even low paying jobs and soon facing $1,200 a month in student loan repayments. I routinely see people $60k-$80k in debt at 22 because they went to college like they were supposed to. Community college is usually a good deal, though. Granted, wanting to work part time forever without getting any additional education isn't ideal, and I think pointing out the limitations would be a good thing. But taking some time before college isn't always a bad idea....See MoreDo you still have and enjoy graduation presents?
Comments (46)Yes! My answer will be long because both are very special in my heart. My parents gave me a Kenmore sewing machine for my college graduation. My mother had taught me to sew so we all well knew the sentimentally behind the gift. It has generated lots of joy through making clothes, craft items, and quilts. In 2019 it began having problems and I purchased a dual purpose machine. But just recently I have decided to have it repaired/tuned because it’s always been a great machine and I can jump on it to do basic sewing and piecing if the newer machine is set up for embroidery. The other gift is this Royal Doulton figurine my sister gave me for my high school graduation. We would go to the mall together and I would stand and just stare at these ladies in the display window. I was absolutely gobsmacked when I opened it. They were expensive! She offered to buy me another - that I could choose myself! - for my college graduation. I never did. Partly because they were even more expensive. But probably mostly because of the enormity of the decision for which one. To this day it is always centered and featured in my hutch. After rereading my words I’ve realized that the greater value of these gifts is the meaning and love they symbolize. My parents were wonderful people and there is no better big sister than mine. Today is my father’s birthday, he passed away two years ago ( my mother five years). My sister is driving 7 hours south to visit. While I’ve been able to go to her state during the pandemic she has not been here since early 2020. So forgive me being sentimental today....See Moretinam61
