Breast cancer reconstruction

I've just been told (1 1/2 hrs ago!) I have a recurrence of cancer meaning mastectemy (sp?) & have option of reconstruction. My breasts are large (40DDD) and I just don't think I want to reconstruct that large. Has anyone one here made the decision to reconstruct small & have the other breast reduced/lifted to match? Any regrets or suggestions?

Background-I found out 18 years ago today (6/11/92)of my previous cancer diagnosis. Guess 6/11 is not my day!

I did the whole magilla with the first diagnosis...no reconstruction...I just wanted to be well as soon as I could.
I would discuss the options with a plastic surgeon and with your oncologist. I assume you will have chemo and radiation....and perhaps any reconstruction might best wait until you get rid of the cancer?

I'm so sorry this has come up again for you. Just my two cents here--I have little experience. Don't you think you would be more comfortable with less weight on two well balanced breasts? Sounds good to me. What does your doctor say? He has done this before? It would be more surgery, probably more soreness and maybe a more difficult recovery?

My only knowledge is that when my elderly mother had a mastectomy, she did not choose reconstruction. She always said she felt off balance. And she did not like the prosthetic breast. But this doesn't really relate to your situation, but I thought I'd share anyway.

When is your surgery? There are lots of nice people on the Kitchen Table Forum, and someone there might have some feedback for you. I suggest you ask over there as this is not a very busy forum.

In my past I've had two experiences with SO's that had breast cancer. One had a lump-ectomy (if that's the way to say it) and the other a wedge-shaped excision. I was with them pre-diagonosis, through the procedures, and afterward. Sexually, it mattered almost not at all. Of course I had to be careful in physical handling at first, which I completely expected. That wasn't the issue. Getting through the physical healing was easy. What was hard with both women was convincing them that it didn't matter to me. Our relationships were much bigger than their boobs. However, neither of them believed that. Both got hung on the "imperfection" thing for the longest time. The period of constant questioning and reassurance seemed interminable. Huge mental problem -- for them, not me. That, too, I think is quite understandable. It would have been better for both of us if they'd believed me....but such things are very deep-seated, apparently. In the end, we came apart for totally unrelated reasons but it was an enlightening experience. Breast damage/reconstruction is a HUGE deal for women. Causes all kinds of troublesome thoughts. Basically saying if your husband is an untrustworthy prick, that's one thing. If the TWO of you are having trouble with the physical change, that's something else entirely. Where it may come down in your particular case, I have no idea.

Silverdove you are only the second person I have heard from who has personally been able to use the SAVI. (The other person is my SAVI Sister from KS who just went through the treatment in March.). if you don't mind sharing, how long did it take you to get this experience in the rear view mirror and move on? I am just 1 week + 1 day out of radiation so I have just begun the healing process. Next week I hope to go to physical therapy for exercises for my arm on the surgery side. Do we always (forever) have to accommodate that side --like carry the purse on the non surgery side, etc.? Thank you so much for writing! I can hardly wait to be able to say like you "back in such and such year I had ....." You are an encouragement Silverdove!

Years ago before Dr. Fuhrman became so commercial, our doctor was following the dietary information he was promoting. Fuhrman had started what he calls the Nutritarian Diet and coined the primary foods g-bombs (Greens, Beans, Onion, Mushrooms, Berries, Seeds). Like most diets, it's centered around eating healthy but g-bombs are foods that are good at supporting and improving the immune system. Our doctor has been on the diet for several years, teaches it to his Resident Students from MSU and encourages his patients (especially those with chronic illnesses or cancer) to use the diet as well. He actually gave us a couple of books written by Dr. Furhman and referred us to his website which has a lot of helpful articles. Honestly? When I saw how commercial Furhman's site is, I thought the whole thing was hoaky and even told that to the Doctor. He encouraged me to look past that and to keep an open mind (and he was right). My husband figured he had nothing to loose by it and decided to give it a try. Immediately we cut 95% animal protien, white sugar and synthetic sweetners out of his diet and the only oil I use to cook with is cold pressed olive oil. He uses milk in his coffee but I try to always buy organic or atleast antibiotic/hormone free. I pretty much cook everything home made so I can control the ingredients and avoid preservatives. My husband loves mushrooms, we put them in all his food, but the white ones at the store are not the best for immune building so we supplement his diet with Host Turkey Tail capsules (I found them on Amazon). The doctor suggested a few different herbs to help with energy because he'll always be on a low dose of chemo. There are natural supplements too that help with a variety of the issues one has when on pain medication or chemo. But I have to admit, what has really made the difference has been this diet. When he's gone off of it, he looks and feels awful, when he goes back on, his counts improve and he feels his best again. We were told to expect his remission to last for 2-3 years but we're in year 5 and his oncologist just told us this week, "it looks like he'll be coasting for a while". (Yeah!) Even though he has an impaired immune system and works in a hospital environment, he hasn't been sick with as much as a cold the entire time. It's completely exceeded our expectations. There's no question that conventional medicine is the best defense against cancer, but not having an immune system afterwards is what really puts a patient at risk. This diet has been very instrumental in keeping my husband healthy and feeling the best he can feel. It's not a substitute for standard care, but it is a great tool to use in tandum. My dear cousin always did a lot, and I do mean a lot, of research on just about anything. When she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer several years ago, she knew it was probably fatal, and it was, taking her life within 6 months. But she altered her normally healthy diet anyway, following a more alkaline diet because that was what she read was supposed to be conducive to helping kill cancer. She also went to Houston to a cancer clinic there and then went thru chemo treatments for a while. Like others who have said, I don’t think there is more you can do now other than be supportive, and encourage her, when you can, to be more proactive and aggressive in her treatment. My good friend even had both breasts removed, choosing that over a lumpectomy, because of the presence of BRCA genes and family history.

New to this site as of today. I had a complete mastectomy Dec 2007. It was MY choice to have both removed. I was never as large (38C) and I never gave reconstruction a second thought. And I have never regretted it. I was 58 at the time and felt I didn't need them. The Dr advised I did'nt need chemo but would be a good "insurance policy" I followed his advise and did chemo. I have talked to lots of ladies since then that went to other hospitals and their Dr didn't feel a need for them to have chemo. But there again I don't have any regrets for taking chemo, as long as I, in my heart feel like it helped and I did everything I could. I know reconstruction will be a long drawn out healing process and you will probably be required to take radiation also. I didn't need radiation being I chose the complete mastectomy. My mother had only one removed and always regretted it. Do what makes you content.....as it is your life. And good luck with whatever you choose.

join up and post in the breast cancet forum, and also in the breast reduction forum. I had a breast reduction for back issues 32GG to 34D and have never looked back. Healing was a little painful but once it was over with, MAN did I love not having all that WEIGHT on me. I've not had experience with cancer, just too large of breasts, but the other womenthere should be able to help. Let us know how it goes.

Eleven years I had Inflammatory Breast Cancer and they did an Mrm on one breast only. I begged for a bilateral mastectomy but they refused saying they didn't want to put me through more than necesssary. I also had chemo first and radiation after the MRM. I hated being lopsided with a passion and now it looks like I have cancer on the other side. Believe it or not, I am excited about the thought of being even again.

I didn't do reconstruction even though my GP tried to talk me into it. It wasn't that important to me.

Being even is good. I guess it would depend on what type of breast cancer you have and what your best chances are long term. Your age may well factor in to this as well. I never was a fancy dresser and if you work in an environment where dress is important that may also make a difference in which way you choose.
