another holiday

tommorow is thanksgiving here in canada. i know that i should have bought a turkey and all the stuff that goes with it, but i just couldn't, so we are going out for pizza tonight. people just don't seem to get "it", yes Al was bedridden for 10 years and I took care of him, gave him his meds and insulin 4 times a day, i also visit him now every day at the cemetary, but i miss him so much that it's almost ripping my heart out. my Al was one of those people depended on he was a good husband, how many people after being married 25 year can say they only had 2 minor fights? he coached every sport our kids were in and other parents requested that their kids be on the team that he coached. he didn't drink or do drugs or swear, he was just a wonderful person that everyone loved. i am so tired of hearing atleast he's not in pain anymore, and yes to be selfish i wish he was in pain and was here where he is supposed to be! i'm 51 and am not supposed to be without a husband, and today i am mad at him. i'm just worrying about Christmas, i'm thinking of cancelling that too, we have no relatives here except one of Al's sister's who is not speaking to us because of the way i planned his funeral (or i should say the way Al told me he wanted it). i just had to get this off my chest, so if you've read this thank you for "listening".

Hi Debbie,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've been posting here for a little while...my mom passed away in July.

I understand still wanting them here, even if it means they would be suffering. I think that way sometimes about my mother. I was her caregiver also.

It's a shame about your sister-in-law but you don't need people like that in your life. Especially not now. Life is to short for that.

Hang in there Debbie. Holidays won't go away but your ability to cope will beome stronger over time - really, it will. Celebrate them in the best manner for you right now. Food, festivities and family get-togethers are traditional at holiday time. It's tough when the tradition has to change, such as in situations like this. But it doesn't mean that it's wrong if you break tradition and just have pizza. Your heart is in the right place.

It sounds as though you hubby was a super special guy. Kids don't take to everyone and the fact that they took to him as a coach was pretty special. I have to say, you are as well, for being the caregiver that you were for him. Take a few moments to give yourself a hug for that. Im sure he would thank you for doing that.

It's OK to be "mad" at your hubby. That's a natural feeling, and they say it's part of a healthy grieving process. Every once in a while I still get mad - my daugher left me 13 yrs ago at the age of eighteen. When I see others with grandchildren or think that no one, including myself, will know how she would be as a fully functioning adult really stings. I understand though that the feeling really isn't anger at her, it is with the situation - that she is gone and there is nothing I can do about it. The only thing I can compare it to is when your computer crashes and suddenly you lose everything you ever put into it, and you can't recover it all. At your age, it'a probably more difficult, because the two of you probably had a lifetime ahead of you. I'm sending you a hug and will include you in my prayers. May you find peace.

Karen, with all those roosters you could have a country French or Italian(Tuscan) 'thing' going and not even know it~I love both. You could bring in some lavender or red geraniums, a few French pictures/signs, maybe red/white toile dishes, and all of a sudden you're kitchen is in France. For the Italian, bottles of oil/herbs, the sunflowers, red/white check tablecloth, and I believe i've even seen a few Italian signs. You could make your own very easily, too. I understand if you're just collecting and don't want to get into a particuliar look. I'm a big collector too, but only have one roosrer. LOL With the things I collect I have at least a dozen~teacups/saucers. teapots, copper(trays,pitchers, plaques,molds,tea/coffee servers, etc.), sterling silver, whiteware, black glass, aqua-blue glass, pefume bottles, crystal, old glassware, antique books, and most recently, dihses!(thanks Judith.)LOL This isn't even counting all my decorating books and magazines, and my bins of fabric!LOL It's a sickness OR an addicition! Thank you all again...it is a precious "tree" for me ...and it brings back lots of good memories...like the heart-shaped gold & pewter pc was given to me by my grandma many yrs ago...it opens up & has our pics inside & my g'pa's too. And that silly Texas shaped pin left of the tree trunk is a junky pc from Texas...my folks wintered there after retirement...that silly colorful peacock feather you see right of the trunk is a from a pair of earrings when I got to go down & visit them in Texas once! (in the middle of an Iowa winter! It was heaven!) And the trinket angel pin...my Mom wore them on lots of things...scarfs, lapels, etc. I could rattle on a long time with you all! But I am pleased that it has inspired some of you with ideas for your keepsakes. Thanks for looking. Jeanne S.

I call it a holiday because I don't feel the need to make everyone feel the same way. I celebrate the holiday because it's fun to be a part of things, not because I believe in the "origins" of it. Would you feel equally sure that you were right if all the stores began wishing you happy XXXX for all the other religions? Or would you then say it should be nondenominational because you didn't enjoy having someone else's beliefs thrust upon you. It's easy to have an opinion about something dear to you, but do you support the parallel argument as well? I suspect not. You also said "our largely secular society" in your post. To me that says it all. Perhaps there are more people who see it in a secular way than a religious one. In that case (and I'm basing it on your own words) perhaps this is an issue of a small vocal group trying to put forth an agenda of their own against a majority. No one is stopping you from saying "Merry Christmas." Why are you so strongly in favour of forcing others to do so. The people who produce cards and run stores are basing their decisions on the wants of the largest groups. It's financial. Apparently their target demographic is larger. I think everyone should be free to celebrate what they want as they want. I don't get the sense that the OP feels that at all. To each his own I guess.

Oh, I didn't think anyone was picking on me, at all! I appreciate all your comments :) I would tell my MIL right now, if it was up to me. My concern isn't just about the lie...but I do think it was the wrong thing to do. What makes me so frustrated is that my husband is now between the proverbial rock and a hard place. The one person, who was out of it and didn't have a thing to do with this lie (two of his brothers and one sister started all this) is stuck having to deal with it. If he tells his mom the truth...and she has a bad reaction and ends up in the hospital...he'll blame himself. If she doesn't see him...and continues to worry and ends up in the hospital...he'll still blame himself. And of course his siblings will blame him, too...although this is not his fault. And to make it worse, his siblings are insisting he visit his mom, continue lying to her, convince her he's fine and somehow that will magically make her feel better. This is like a really bad made for TV movie...I told my husband that he is in a no-win situation and none of this is his fault. He got sick...it happens! His family lied to his mom and now she's going to find out. They're going to have to deal with it. She's been in and out of the hospital the last few years (heart trouble, high blood pressure, etc.) but she's also dealt with DIL's cancer, BIL's cancer (both doing well for now) and her only great-grandchild being born premature and spending a couple of months in the hospital. The woman is tougher than they want to admit...and isn't it odd that everyone else can tell her about their dramas, but they lie about my husband's illness. This only worked because we live out of town on our farm. My husband calls her, but he's running out of excuses as to why he hasn't visited for the holidays. As I said, she's not my mom...but my husband shouldn't have to be the one to take the blame for their lie. He's got enough on his plate. Add a few colorful phrases...and that was basically my email to my BIL :)
