THE QUIET MAN: 1 part Jameson Irish Wiskey 1 part Irish Mist........its definately a sipper & delicious!

Maybe I'll have to buy some Irish mist. I have the Jameson's aw well as the cream for some Irish coffee.

Ah KathyJane. Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!! Top O' the marnin' to ya. I really like your joke. A blessing for you: May your mornings bring joy and your evenings bring peace... May your troubles grow less as your blessings increase! And a joke in return: An Irish man has been at a pub all night drinking. The bartender finally says that the bar is closed. So your man stands up to leave and falls flat on his face. He figures he'll crawl outside and get some fresh air and maybe that will sober him up. Once outside he stands up but again falls flat on his face. He crawls home. Reaching the door he tries to stand up, and yet again, falls flat on his face. He crawls through the door and up the stairs. When he reaches his bed he summons the last of his strength and tries one final time to stand. It's no use. He tumbles into bed and is soon sound asleep, only to awaken the next morning to the sound of his wife standing over him shouting. 'So... you've been out drinking again!' 'How did you know?' he asks, his head hung in shame. 'The pub called-- you left your damn wheelchair down there again!'

It was fun reading all of this, especially since it goes back to '06. That first post of Lars with the cherry cream soda...yummmy. I only consume coffee if it's ice cream, Kahlua or some other dessert. I like tea, black, green, but not any spiced teas. Really dislike mint too. Mostly I drink flavored unsweetened seltzer, iced tea or lemonade. Occasionally I'll have a fruit soda, but I find them too sweet these days so I mix them with my seltzer. Alcohol? Not really. Don't like wine as a rule. I can deal with a little champagne or Asti. Will drink vodka, that Kahlua making it a Black Russian. Smiles. I can go several years or more without having any alcohol. Last year I turned my current [at the time] vodka into vanilla. This fall an old friend from high school came to visit and brought a bottle of vodka. I had 2 light Cape Cods and when he left I turned the Svedka into vanilla. LOL. In winter in the evening we either have hot tea or hot cocoa often. I do love hot chocolate made with cocoa or even a nice chocolate bar.

Gina, you haven't offended anyone, I'm sure! It's not your fault what someone else named these cupcakes. As a non-drinker, I'm not familiar with names of drinks, and unfortunatly, the first thing that "Car Bomb" brings to mind are terrorists and car bombs in Iraq, and other places. There is so much of that going on, & we've all seen and heard far too much of that type of thing, I think. And that's why the name is offensive. Foodsonastump, you are absolutely right! Definitely NOT a good thing to introduce the flavor of ANY kind of alcohol to kids! Anyone who has dealt with alcoholism in any way shape or form, even at a distance, knows that! But I won't get on that soap box this morning. Actually, even though I am not a 'drinker' I do love to cook & bake with it, and love to eat the finished products. I'm not familiar with the flavor of guiness, but I do think these cupcakes sound very good, and am clipping it to try soon. Thanks, Gina, for posting it. Rusty

Linda, The older I get the more I revert back to my parents' remedies. Mon & Dad were of French and Native Canadian stock, grew up in the Depression, both served in the Army in WWII and believed in self reliance. Hence I learned to grow veggies, hunt, chop wood for heat, make do with little and treat many minor ailments. My children are a mix of the old and new. But when I offer a Hot Toddy made with their Pepere's recipe or a tidbit of wisdom from their Memere, they value the product or the wisdom. Of course they also love their Ipods, computers, cell phones and the other trappings of modern life!

No such thing as a Quiet Man, especially if he is Irish, and has enjoyed some Irish Whiskey!!!

As I grow older I think this is a story I should not share because it is inappropriate behaviour but.....it is part of my life experience.

My father, Terrence John O'Grady, never drew a sober breath on St Paddy's day. He was a kind and gentle man who rarely drank to excess but for some reason he "lost it" on St Patrick's Day.

It would start with Irish Coffee and end with my Mom putting him to bed. He was never cranky or bad tempered. He and my uncles, Timothy, Myles, Patrick and Sean, would get together and play the spoons, sing, drink whiskey and beer , tell stories and laugh!

They only did that openly after Nana O'Grady pased away. While she was alive, they minded what they did in her presence and were darn sure to go to Mass ...sober!!! LOL

Not sure why they never seemed to have to work March 17th !

PS: My brother, Terrence John O'Grady, better known as Skip seems to hold this tradition true! LOL

Perhaps the title of the drink comes from a Barry Fitzgerald line in the movie "The Quiet Man".

When asked if he wanted some water for his whiskey, he replied, 'When I drink whiskey, I drink whiskey. When I drink water, I drink water.'

Now, here's a terrible pun:

I guess Grandpa was right, he told me that God invented whiskey to prevent the Irish from ruling the world! (grin)

Great story, Chase...
Since it usually fell during Lent...our celebrations were much more subdued...
Americans use any excuse to party!
Happy St.Patrick's Day to all those who imbibe, I mean celebrate...I'll toast to you with a cup of tea...

What is "irish mist." Online searching I only found reference to "honey and herbs." What herbs?

It's sort of an Irish Drambui...a whisky based liquor....and the herbs are secret.

Chase I had to laugh because your story is the same as mine(minus the spoons) except it was my father and his 12 brothers!!!!!!!!! Yeh I said 12...they loved Paddy's Day...Daddy never drank but half of them died from what my Grandma Corcoran called "The Curse"....I really enjoyed this drink very very nice but it will knock you in the dirt if you get crazy and drink it fast. Looking foward to Tuesday I love to party!! Guess thats in my genes!
