HardiePlank siding on floors-- Looks like concrete!

I just saw in a magazine where someone used HardiePanel (fiberboard cement) siding for floors. They had glued down large panels of it. It looked great -- like scored concrete. The article said the cost was about $1 per sq ft. Hard to believe! Has anyone heard of this or have any thoughts on how it would work? Intuitively, if the stuff is made to withstand the elements on the outside of a house, it would seem to work for floors, no? The magazine is Dwell July/Aug 08, p. 90.

Interesting idea...I like the unusual and inventive in flooring alternatives.

I would think that HardiePanel would be susceptible to powdering if used as a walking surface. However, if it was sealed with a quality waterborne, clear nonyellowing floor finish (either permanent or sacrificial), it might make for an attractive and serviceable walking surface.

As with any flooring project, you must start with a flat, sound and smooth substrate.

I will be putting Hardi plank siding up in less than a month. I live in the middle of a woods. I want to blend two different shades of paint. Gray primer(dry) than (light green first...(dry) than a gray over it,(dry) and possible another charco gray lightly to give depth to the cedar mill. Pain staking but I got time and I want my house to blend with the woods surroundings. Could someone please guide me on how to do it right. Thanks!

Hardi-plank and stone - looking for color/style suggestions

I like the front per the plan with board and batten with the stone. On the sides, you can do lap Hardie with or without the batten in the gables. We have cedar shake on the front and the shake wraps on the sides over the entire garage and the east patio area. Where we hit the main house body sides, we converted to Hardie lap siding (including the back). We have a lot of landscape on the sides so the transition isn't noticeable to our neighbors. The 2nd photo was taken right after the landscape was done on that side. Now, the vine is up the obelisk and the shrubs are big so that the transition is less noticeable. As for color, our house is a sage/grey solid stain (not paint). We are in full sun with a south exposure on the front (passive solar). I had originally wanted to do a dark brown solid stain, but we decided to go with this color because we had used on a previous house and knew it worked. Hope this helps, Cameron

qbryant - I built my house 13 years ago with HardiePlank and when I had the house painted this past summer, the painters found and repaired any defects. Nothing was wrong with any of the HardiePlank. The object is to put it up properly so that no moisture will get in or behind it. HardiePlank is like brick - you will never have to replace it under normal circumstances. Vinyl will eventually breakdown and will have to be replaced.

Hi! I'm renovating a 1942 cape cod home in New England and considering cobble stone hardie plank siding. I found a vintage solid wood gorgeous front door 2nd hand, and am looking to do a dark brown roof. I like a greige siding (grey/brown) and think cobble stone is the closest I'll come in hardie colors. Can anyone share their house pic of you went with this siding? Also, did you accent with Browns or blacks (door/roof/shutters if any, etc). I think this color could go either way- I'm hoping. Thx for help on this!!
