Opinions on HardiePlank Beaded siding?

Hi everyone,

We are doing a major remodel and trying to finalize our siding choice. Our architect has spec'ed HardiePlank Beaded Smooth siding. Our contractor was surprised by that; he thinks it looks old fashioned and unusual. Our house is traditional, though I think the architect was trying to give it a fresh twist.

Of course, at this point we have changed a few of the original features (the windows are white, not bronze; the metal roof over the porch changed to shingles due to cost, etc.). I have stalked the neighborhood but can't seem to find the HardiePlank beaded siding on any houses around me. Any thoughts or advice?

I think the beaded give's a little extra textural look to the house.

I think both look great. The way your architect is doing it is less traditional, more clean and updated. Love your house design, I'm hoping to do Hardi plank in pure white as well (once I finally build). I have some reference photos that look similar, I'll try to find and share..

HardiePlank is the way to go. It is just as good as brick because it is concrete siding. We have this on our house as our neighborhood only does this or brick - no vinyl allowed.

The size of HardiPlank lap siding is given in "widths" of the individual pieces and the "exposure" (the visible part) is 1 1/4" smaller. In the northeast, a maximum width 8 1/4" HardiPlank has an exposure of 7" and there are three smaller sizes each an inch less in width and exposure. The choice would be between 4", 5", 6", and 7" exposures. In the rest of the country there are two larger exposures: 8" and 10 1/4" In New England traditional wood clapboard siding has a 4" exposure and the larger exposures are more commonly used in less traditional houses or in milder climates to the south and west. Not knowing where you live or the style of your house makes it difficult to advise you. A "reveal" is a much smaller setback usually at trim board corners.

Does anyone have Hardi Plank siding?

I will be putting Hardi plank siding up in less than a month. I live in the middle of a woods. I want to blend two different shades of paint. Gray primer(dry) than (light green first...(dry) than a gray over it,(dry) and possible another charco gray lightly to give depth to the cedar mill. Pain staking but I got time and I want my house to blend with the woods surroundings. Could someone please guide me on how to do it right. Thanks!

Painting HardiPlank - Flat? Satin? Eggshell?

Hardiplank siding paints up real nice. Make sure all caulking is complete. Make sure all cut ends are primed where possible. Good installers prime every cut before installing. No need to prime siding as hardiplank comes preprimed. Flat tends to look the best when new but will get dirty quickly. Satin is your best overall choice. Have them put on 2 coats for a paint job that will last a long time. I wouldn't put too much stock in the 'lifetime' claim. That is based on the average homeowner only staying in a particular house for 7 years. I have been using Duration since it came out, no complaints yet.

Hard to tell from the small pic, but it looks lovely and interesting to me. I suspect if you are buying the home, there are going to be a lot more pressing issues to deal with than shutter color.

We are leaning towards a 6 inch exposed smooth hardie in white painted with aura,The horror stories about hardie do scare me alittle though,it's not cheap.

i did a experiment with a peice in a cup of water and it socked all the water up in a few weeks.

Not very many options if you want that look,we are in Oklahoma with moderate rain so I hope it holds up.

No it wasn't,I should have and might do that but I knew the back wouldn't be painted so I figured it wouldn't mater,it was a small 3 x 7 peice I sit in a about 16 oz of water.It was done last month.
We are using a 3/8 rainscreen so that should help.

qbryant - I built my house 13 years ago with HardiePlank and when I had the house painted this past summer, the painters found and repaired any defects. Nothing was wrong with any of the HardiePlank. The object is to put it up properly so that no moisture will get in or behind it. HardiePlank is like brick - you will never have to replace it under normal circumstances. Vinyl will eventually breakdown and will have to be replaced.

That's the main reason for us using a rain screen and better paint.
