Has anyone tried the Bernstein diet for diabetes?

I am newly diagnosed with diabetes and a friend recommended this diet to me based on some things he had heard from others. Has anyone tried it? If so, how did it work for you?

Ask your doctor - the trained professional who made the diagnosis - what sort of diet you should have. He knows your medical history far better than any of us do.

Yes, she should follow her doctors instruction. She may have other problems to consider when planning a diet.

I am curious, just what is the Bernstein diet? I haven't heard of it.

Just want to state my facts as I have personally experienced them since using the recipe for Lisa's fish food. My pond is in it's fifth year. I started with six 5 inch koi and two shubunkins. The only thing I fed my fish during the first four years were Cheerios, watermelon, canteloupe, zuchinni and Tetra Pond food sticks. Five of my fish did not seem to grow and their coloring was bland, however the white ogon butterfly was always a little bit larger than the other five. The orange coloring on the other fish looked like a light peach and the black coloring was gray. Last spring I purchased six more koi that were five inches long. Same as the koi I started with five years ago. This year I started making my own fish food using Lisa's (goodkarma's) recipe and I can't believe what has happened. The five year olds are larger and their coloring is very vibrant, the koi I bought last year have caught up to the older larger fish (five year olds). All of the other fish are also this size. These younger fish were only about seven inches long this spring. I would guess they are now approximately 18 inches long, or longer. Here is a picture to show you exactly what I mean. The large white fish to the left of the photo is my 5 year old white ogon butterfly, the fish in the center right behind the white ogon is also 5 years old (orange and black ginrin) and the fish on the right is the 2 year old I bought last spring (white with black down the middle of its back). If you compare them, they are all the same size (the small brat in the middle is a shubunkin). If you look closely in the top of the pic you can see some of the fry that were born in the pond this spring. They are now about 4-5 inches long. I supplement the homemade fish food with Hikari Gold which they are refusing to eat since I have been making Lisa's food. Another good thing with this food is that it is a sinking food. Koi are naturally bottom feeders. The only purpose for floating fish food is to enable you to see your fish when they come to the surface to eat. As I said the facts speak for themselves. Jenny

There was something on the news about a research university (Stanford?) where they found that a large plurality of people diet better on low carbs, and a similar sized percentage diet better on low fats. They have a genetic test for it. It was something like 38% of people for one and 43% for the other. I don't know if that testing is available to the public, though one could try a month of each and see how it goes, but that's the only targeted thing I've heard of with any science behind it. They've also reported that women over 30 need to up their activity level just to maintain their weights rather than lose. (Sigh.) I agree the tried and true, good nutrition, portion control, and increase activity is the best--though hardest. And getting enough sleep. The grazing diet makes one a social pariah, but it works for me if I can just bother to do it (and I need to!). Divide your target calorie intake for the day by 5 or 6, and portion your day's food into that sized amounts, putting approximately 3 hours between servings. I've actually eaten more than usual doing this and still lost weight. It makes the people you eat with cranky though.

My latest kick is Dr. Becker's book, Real Food. I haven't started the book yet - just got it. With her recipes, you can do either raw or cooked. I tried the raw, with Feline Instincts, and my animals did really, really well on it. At first, the whole process seemed daunting, but after you get into a routine, it's fine. But, I just can't do raw anymore. I work, so I'd have to put the food out in the a.m., and then take it up bc you can't, of course, leave raw chicken sitting around. My cats are all grazers and by the time I got home, they were ravenous. When I was home on a weekend, I'd have to keep taking the food in and out of the fridge all day long for whomever was hungry at the time (I have 5 cats), so it was just tooooo much. I really wanted to like B.I. and tried for a long time to get things set up with them, but their website had too many issues and they, too, are expensive. I look at sites like catinfo.org, and naturalcatcareblog.com for info often, too. I'm hoping Dr. Becker's book can give me some better, current info on meat sources. All I usually feed my cats is chicken. I've read that beef doesn't agree with a lot of cats, so I don't give them that. And I've read that you have to be careful not to give them certain kinds of fish or too much fish, plus they don't care for fish most of the time. No pork. I've seen on the Inet that you can buy rabbit and other odd sources, even live mice (can't do that) but, again, sooo expensive. In the meantime, I use Evo, esp for my kidney cat, and Weruva. Thankfully, I've got a really great vet that is affordable, so I can spend the $ on food that I need to, but even so....sheesh! I just cannot believe people still feed their cats dry food, tho. It's like having kids and letting them eat cheetos all the time.

Just remember that meats have NO fiber. Fiber is in veggies and fruits. Seek out whole grains like wheat, oats, barley and brown rice. Make this a 'whole-life' way of eating, not a diet that you get off after a few weeks. It does work.

I looked the diet up on Google. It could be dangerous unless a person was under doctor supervision. It is a high protein, low carb diet carried to the extreme. The dieter loses a lot of weight quickly. It's not a diet that would be something that you could stay on the rest of your life. Only 850-950 calories per day. That's not enough to keep you healthy. See a Registered Dietitian for a meal plan. I am sure that your physician will be glad to suggest someone.

You really need to see an Certified Diabetic Educator....you will get so much information about diabetes including dietary guidelines.
I used to be a diabetic educator and I can not emphasis enough how important seeing a specialist in diabetic education is.
It is the best thing you can do for yourself.
I had many patients whose doctor gave them so little information or just told them to avoid sugar....they had no information of symptoms of high blood sugar, low blood sugar or the complications that may occur.
Please, please, please seen a Certified Diabetic Educator. Call your local hospital or home health agency for a referral....your doctor may not think it is necessary but truly, it is!

When my husband was diagoned 1 1/2 years ago with the early stages of diabetes, I put him on The Zone Diet which has been used extensively for a number of years to control diabetes without medication. His blood sugar is almost normal. I do not think the national diabetes association promotes the most healthy diet for diabetes - way too much starches....all I know is that The Zone Diet works - if you read the books you will understand biologically/chemically why it does work so well in keeping blood sugar at a normal even level. Do your homework and start reading and researching - it will pay off.
