I don't use the usual "sunless tanners" but during summer months use the Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer and after about a week it gives a gradual, natural, very light tan glow.

It doesn't wash off and feels like regular moisturizer.

This product generally gets good reviews.

I always use the brand Fake Bake. It looks natural and not orange. You'll want to use it at night and shower in the morning though. It has a color guide so you can see when you're rubbing in. You won't want to be going to the store after you first put it on because the guide makes it looks a little strange. The brown looks a tad lighter once you shower. It does rub off a little ONLY after you apply it. Usually I'll have a little bit of brown around the neck of my shirt and I'll put a towel on my pillow. The good news is it comes out in the wash with no problems. I�ve never had it rub off on my clothing after that.

Fake Bake has a bunch of different products. I use the original lotion and I also use it on my face. Oh and don't be scared when you look at the color of the lotion! Your skin doesn't end up that color. I will mention this doesn't smell nice but I deal with it.

I've heard good things about Faux Tan but I've never tried it. I like Fake Bake so much and can get it at cost so that's what I stick with.

I also see on the side of the QVC site, it mentions the "Bronzed and Buff" set. I've heard good things about that too.

One of the most important things when applying sunless tanners is to properly prepare the skin first, and you want to make sure not to apply too much on dryer areas of your skin. Sunless.com has application tips and reviews of products.

Also wanted to mention the first application give a sun kissed look. I usually will use it two nights in a row because I like the color a little deeper and won't need to apply again for at least a week.

There a select few. Also, you need to prep before using the products. Good exfoliation of your skin and then a bit of vaseline around your heels, in between your toes, anyplace where the sun would not naturally tan. I use a bit of moisturizer on any really dry spots prior to applying the self tanner.

1. "Fake Bake" - great product. Looks very dark when you put it on, almost a dk brown/black green. Trick is to do it before bed and dry completely before getting into bed. If you aren't completely dry, the tanner will stain your bedsheets and may become uneven in places. First thing the next morning take a lukewarm shower. Don't use a washcloth or puff. Just soap off. You will see a the excess tanner washing off and will be left with a natural looking tan color.

"Tan Towel" (the original) not the Loreal product. Is a wipe that will pretty much cover your arms, legs and face with one towelette. You can find these online. Pkging is white packet, black lettering.

"Whipped Chocolate" - A foam that you apply in the evening and then take a shower first thing in the morning, leaves a nice light tan. Available at beauty supply houses like Sally, etc. Works similarly to Fake Bake, but significantly cheaper in price.

The products that have a green hue to them are the best I've used. End product isn't at all orange looking.

I also use a product called Ocean Potion which is a moisturizer with a hint of self tanner year round. It is great to even out a natural tan, or to build a small amount of coloring off season. Use it every day and within a week or so, you will have a light tan. Again, you need to be careful not to tan places that mother nature wouldn't if you were outside sun bathing (bottoms of your feet, etc).

I think the biggest issue is lack of preparation in using these products. You definitely need to exfoliate, use moisturizer in dry spots prior to application. Thereafter, you need to moisturize every day to keep the tan from looking like it has cracked.

Stay away from Neutrogena spray tan, all Clarins' self tanning, and most all of the drugstore instant tan products. IMHO, these are a few of the worst offenders of making people look like someone took an orange marker and went crazy.

Oh, and wash your hands thoroughly a few times as soon as you are done applying any self tanning product. Soap them up into a good lather, and then take a nail brush and do under your fingernails and around your cuticles. Nothing worse than having self tanner on your hands. It's a dead giveway.

I will mention this doesn't smell nice but I deal with it.

This is why I don't like to use self tanners at night. I don't want to subject my husband to the stink!

I don't think I've ever smelled any self-tanning product that smelled nice at all. There must be some ingredient in all of the products that emits a certain odor.

Seems that once the product is dry the smell dissipates, at least for me.

I use the same stuff that Demi does - the Jergens. I start using it early in the spring when it is time to put on short sleeve shirts and capris. Looks nice and natural - no streaking nor do you look like a pumpkin.

I have even convinced the younger gals at work to try it.

Another vote for the Jergens, people have asked me if I used a tanning bed....nope....just jergens....I don't think it smells bad either.

The "smell" from sunless tanners comes from the very reaction to the active ingredient, dihydroxyacetone (DHA).

Regardless of what claims a self-tanner makes about unique formulations, all tanners use the same active ingredient: dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a colorless sugar that's often derived from sugar beets or sugar cane. When applied to the skin, it reacts with the amino acids in the skin's very top layer (i.e., the dead skin surface layer), turning it brown.

That telltale self-tanner aroma will make its presence known a couple of hours after application (sometimes sooner). It's just what happens when the DHA starts reacting with your skin, so not much can be done about it.
