May be a dumb question but...

Do Jewish bakeries close for Pesach? We were visiting DD recently and a book on food in her city recommended a Jewish bakery which was apparently famous for its challah. I decided to go there as I haven't had challah since I was in the States 30 years ago (yeah, yeah, I know I could make my own but it's much easier to fly over to the other side of the country for it, then I get to visit my DD :-) ). We woke up on the day we were going and suddenly I thought "Oh no! What if it's Pesach already and it's closed?" Fortunately it wasn't and on our next visit I'm going to pay for checked luggage so I can take an empty suitcase and load up on challah, bagels and ONION BREAD!!! Oh, it's SOOOO GOOD!! Also empty the freezer a bit before I go :-)

It's not a dumb question at all! In fact, they do! Passover starts Monday night, so you're ok till then. :)

Thanks for that! I thought that must be the case, who could sell enough matzos to justify staying open :-)?
It made me smile, they had a hot "cross" bun, with a star of David piped on it in icing instead of a cross :-) A clever adaptation!

Benderboard is used for a clean, defined edge. If your paths are intended to be informal and you don't mind the gravel spilling out of the path (it definitely will anyway) the benderboard is not necessary. What borders your path? That may tell you whether a clearly defined edge is important or not. Gravel spilling into a xeriscape bed is fine. Bermuda grass mixing into a gravel path is not so fine. The nature of pea gravel makes it less than ideal for paths. If you can find crushed rock, it will be more pleasant to walk on and will travel less.

Thanks, but i'd still like to know if anyone uses a lock in conjunction with any brand auto window opener, or will locking it closed cause damage? I don't have a HF greenhouse, just the window opener. My windows swing freely, and weigh only a couple of pounds. I don't intend to disconnect the opener every time a storm is predicted, but I will lock my windows rather than risk losing one. If no one has tried this yet then I'll be the guinea pig and let you know what happens. BTW, both openers have been installed for a week and so far they are working great. Open at 70 degrees and close about the same.

Carb removal..dumb question but...

I think your carb is similar to my Murray. I remove the carb AND manifold as a complete assembly from the engine. 4 Star type bolts mount the manifold to the block. Then you can flip it over and remove the 2 bolts on bottom of the carb to remove it from manifold. You're correct, the 4 screws on top just hold the carb top cover on. I found it helpful to flip the carb over when removing the top as the float is hinged to the top cover and will be in more of a level position when turned over allowing it to slide out of carb body easier. Keep your work area clean and clear to insure you don't lose any small parts. I work in a copy paper case lid with raised sides to keep parts from rolling off. And be on the lookout for fuel draining out of carb when you flip it over. Good luck with your rebuild!

The description says the genset has a 120v recept that can deliver 50 amps (I'll bet its duplex recpt isn't rated for more than 20 amps, but that's another issue). Sounds like the 120/240 switch parallels the armature windings, reversing one, into the 120v output. So you want the 240v position for running the house. I hope you don't have anybody in your house who would die without power, such as a person who needs oxygen from a concentrator. That doesn't look like a very high quality genset, and I'd wonder about its long term reliability. Dunno about the genset and the TV. The safe answer would be just to not use it (the television set, I mean). I can't imagine burning up $expensive$ gasoline just to watch televison on a big screen set anyway. I don't expect to have all the usual comforts when the power goes off; I'm OK with heat, a working fridge, and a few lights. Different priorities, I guess. ;-)

Colleen, I sure don't know but I agree, you should fly all the way across the country to visit your daughter, and then fill up that suitcase as a double bonus!

There are some that have a Pesach kitchen and start making and selling Pesach sweets about 3 weeks before the holiday. But they do close, at least during chag, and I think a lot are closed in general during the holiday because it's an opportunity to go on vacation.

Uh, I don't think a Jewish bakery is going to be making Challah during Pesach. It breaks all the laws of Pesach!!

Well, yeah, I knew that. My question was, would the bakery close? I was wondering if there were other products they might sell which would justify keeping open, or if they would just close and give all the staff a holiday.

I'm sure any one of us can call the bakery for you and post here. If they close, they may have recommendations for other bakeries that 'convert' to Passover products. If you really want to pursue it, a local synagogue can probably help.

I think Passover products might not 'ship' well.

It's a kind thought, Jessy, but the bakery is in Melbourne, Australia (the other side of my country :-) ) so it would be easier and cheaper for me to call them myself if I needed to know if they were open for Pesach. It was more of a curiosity thing, since as I explained, I have already been there. It was just that while we were in Melbourne I suddenly realised it was almost Pesach but wasn't sure of the actual dates. Then it occured to me that if it WAS Pesach the bakery would almost certainly be closed and we would have a forty minute tram ride for nothing. I don't really need Passover products, I just like Jewish bakery products :-). I also don't really have anyone handier than you guys to ask these questions, since this being Western Australia, the nearest (and only) local synagogue is 100km away :-) We have few Jewish people here, it's a different demographic.
