too dumb to ask an intelligent question but...

my neighbor gave me 2 orchids. 1st orchid was still in cellophane and it was soaking wet in the potting medium. i removed the cello wrap and let it dry out a bit. its got 4 dark green leaves and the spike looks healthy.

she brought me another. this one is in bad shape. the leaves were all dead. the spike is brown almost all the way down to the pot. is it done for?

they came from lowes. thats all the info i have. anyone have suggestions or websites?

Welcome. Glad that you found the forum. We'll help as much as possible.

Toss #2.

Can you describe #1 a bit more? Are the leaves flat and there are two going one way and two the other? If so, it is a Phal (pronounced 'fail', but you won't). These are great house plants. If you have a nice east window that would be perfect.

I think your carb is similar to my Murray. I remove the carb AND manifold as a complete assembly from the engine. 4 Star type bolts mount the manifold to the block. Then you can flip it over and remove the 2 bolts on bottom of the carb to remove it from manifold. You're correct, the 4 screws on top just hold the carb top cover on. I found it helpful to flip the carb over when removing the top as the float is hinged to the top cover and will be in more of a level position when turned over allowing it to slide out of carb body easier. Keep your work area clean and clear to insure you don't lose any small parts. I work in a copy paper case lid with raised sides to keep parts from rolling off. And be on the lookout for fuel draining out of carb when you flip it over. Good luck with your rebuild!

I have several of the smaller, colored, hybrids in the ground - they come back pretty reliably as far as being there. I have to admit that I didn't water this summer as much as I should/could have (I am on a well, but....), so the blooms weren't great. However, considering the size of the bulbs (corms, tubers, ?) when planted and when I dug one up this spring, forgetting that there already WAS something in that spot, they are obviously thriving. With some extra mulching, I would think that yours would do the same in the ground. Of course, if you LIKE them in pots, you can also do that with them...., but I would protect them from hard freezes, whether in an unheated shed/garage or in your greenhouse. While the un-improved, plain white one will grow in water - and probably not like to be in freezing water - they would also grow as a weed in sandy soil in San Francisco (where you had BETTER want them where you planted them, because you would only with assiduous efforts get all the bits of root, and thus all the sprouts, out of the soil after several years if you changed your mind about location) - the other, colored, hybrids, can thrive in drier conditions, but don't like to be soggy.

Well, first off you need to be able to put your pictures on the world wide web. You can post them on one of the photo hosting sites, or if you have one, your own web site. If you have only a picture or two, you can upload them to the GardenWeb Gallery. Once you have pictures on the web, you can then copy the link that appears in the address box and paste it into the "Optional Link URL:" that will show up on the second page of the form that you use to start a new thread. If you are on a photo hosting site, you have to do something to make the pictures public, so we can see them without logging in. That depends on the molding...is it attached to the cabinet and separate from the rest of the trim? If so it should match the cabinet. If, however it is at the ceiling and runs into crown around the rest of the room that's the trim color, it could match the trim. For example, my kitchen has 2 rows of crown...one at the cabinet and one at the ceiling. The cabinet one matches the cabinets, the ceiling one matches the rest of the trim in the room. But here is an example where the cabinet trim does not match the ceiling trim even though they both touch the ceiling. Welcome, Caroleena,

Rather than the title of your thread, how about - you lack info about orchids and, being intelligent, are checking out resources? :) What do you think?

In the thread "No flowers, now what?" I posted a growing routine plus some basic questions for someone who's new to orchids and has a Phal, as Richard described. The punctuation got hosed, and I'm planning to re-post a clean copy later today.

Does your orchid w/ the green leaves have a tag that gives the name of the orchid? If so, that'll help, too.

If you go to the American Orchid Society website, you will find orchid culture notes for different orchids. Each has a silhouette drawing of the orchip on the page. From the silhouette you can tell what kind of orchid it is, and download and print up the cultural instructions.

There are additional cultural instructions at the Canadian Orchid Congress website once you know what type of orchid you have.

Your instincts -- remove the cellophane wrap-- were certainly right. And I agree with richard -- pitch the one with no live leaves.
