Painfully Dry Hands

My teenaged son works in the meat department of a grocery store chain; one of his duties is cleaning the meat cutting equipment every day in scalding hot water. He wears rubber gloves but his hands are still extremely dry, red and chapped and are cracking around the knuckles. Before I take him to a dermatologist, can anyone recommend something to alleve the problem? He uses Cornhuskers but it hasn't helped much.

Does he also wear gloves when working with the meat?

You can get "glove liners" - snug cotton knit things to wear under the food prep gloves to absorb the sweat.

Also there is a "silicon glove" hand cream that basically waterproofs your skin for several hours.

We get either Vaseline Brand Creamed Petroleum Jelly or the store brand, about 2.50 a tube. It is thicker than peanut butter, just rub in a good amount before going to sleep, and if you can put on more during the day, it'll make a difference. But your son still needs to address what's drawing the moisture from his skin...by using gloves. I know they aren't very convenient for gripping, but it'd make a great deal of difference. When he is NOT working with his hands, he needs to have the Creamed Vaseline on them. Good Luck! We use this on cracked heels too...

Young trees and vines are an entirely different matter than well established ones. They need more frequent water. Like an inch or two once a week on newly planted. If big trees are nearby or weeds are present maybe more. Grapes are one of the most drought tolerant fruits. So that is a good standard gauge for watering needs. The nuts will need more water than grapes for best nut size and fill. There is no upside to shorting water on nuts. Peaches, nectarine, and plum after getting well rooted can benefit from some water deficit. The benefit comes in the form of sweeter and more flavorful fruit at the expense of some fruit size. I'd say water those about like the grapes. If they aren't dropping leaves or the fruit isn't shriveling they aren't too dry. Cherries, pears, and apples probably need a little water than grapes. Cut the dry periods off a little sooner.

The weather really has been strange this year, we have had one of the hottest Junes so far, no rain to speak of (usually pours this month) we did get some rain last night. So far the Echinaceas are looking pretty good some are growing gangbusters, have lots of buds forming. Some are growing slowly but look healthy. I noticed last night Summer Sky, Double Decker, Sundown, Sunset, Razzmatazz and Magnus are the forerunners in my garden as far as good healthy growth and formation of flower buds goes. One of my favorites Twilight looks healthy, the small clump seems to have finer leaves and stems this year, I'm thinking it might need a smidge of potash. Echinaceamanic what are your thoughts on this? What do you fertilize with or do you not fertilize? I hope you are going to show us more of your seedlings this year, I remember one from last year it was awesome. Annette

The recipe books "Make a Mix" and "More Make a Mix" are really good and have many different dry mixes you can make yourself to have on hand. Here are a few I found on the WWW. Bacon-flavoured dip mix (DRY MIX RECIPE) Bacon flavoured dip mix 2 tb instant bacon bits 1 ts instant beef bouillon 1 tb instant minced onion 1/8 ts minced garlic Combine all ingredients in a small bowl; blend well. Spoon mixture onto a 6-inch square of aluminum foil and foil to make airtight (or zip-lock). Label as bacon-flavoured dip mix. Store in a cool, dry place and use within 6 months. Makes one package (about 3 T) of mix. Bacon flavoured dip: Combine 1 cup of sour cream and 1 package of mix. Chill at least 1 hour before serving. Makes about 1 cup of dip. VARIATIONS: substitute 1 cup yogurt, 1 cup cottage cheese, or 1 (8 oz)package of softened cream cheese for sour cream. You can do a beautiful label with all instructions. It'S a good gift! marika Onion soup MIX 3/4 cup instant (dry) minced onions 1/3 cup beef-flavor instant bouillon 4 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon celery seeds, crushed 1/4 teaspoon sugar Combine all ingredients and keep in an airtight container. The same flavour than the onion soup from the grocery, but really cheap! marika sesame-cheese Dip mix -Dry mix RECIPE- 1 T grated parmesan cheese 1/2 t salt 1 dash pepper 2 t toasted sesame seeds 1/2 t celery seed 1/8 t garlic powder Combine all ingredients in a small bowl, blend well. Spoon mixture onto a little bag. Label, store in a cool, dry place, and use within 4 months. Makes 1 package (about 2 T) of mix. Combine 1 cup of sour cream and 1 package of mix. Chill at least 1 hour before serving. (the taste is better if you do it 24 h before you serve it, and this is the same for all dips mixes) marika Super salad Seasoning mix -DRY MIX RECIPE- Super salad seasoning mix 2 c. grated parmesan cheese 1/2 c. sesame seed 1 T. Instant minced onions 1/2 t. dried dill seed 3 T. celery seeds 1/2 t. freshly ground pepper 2 t. salt 1/2 t. garlic salt 2 T. Parsley flakes 2 T. poppy seeds 2 t. paprika Combine all ingredients. Put in a quart airtight container and label. Store and use within 3 to 4 months. Makes about 3 cups of mix. Use Super salad seasoning mix on the following: sprinkled topping over tossed green salads, baked potatoes and buttered French bread or rolls before toasting, as a garnish for potatoe salads, macaroni or egg salads and as sour cream dip made with 2 T. of mix to 1 cup of sour cream.

I also noticed the same thing so I let it all dry a good two hours then I lightly wet sanded the entire surface 1000 then went to a car wash and gently soap and water cleaned dried , then with anew microfiber cloth dabbed a little bit of high purity mineral spirits lightly wiped entire surface let it dry at least 30 minutes then do a once over with a new clean tack cloth .One section at a time recoated with a third coat let it all dry 1 1/2 - 2 hours then without touching the surface in any way sprayed on a light coat of Rust-Oleum triple thick glaze and after a couple of hours inspected by rubbing fingers lightly over surface and voila ,! No silvery dusty residue and looks as if I have sealed the chrome silvery mirror like finish I will probably lightly sand with 1500 and apply a second and third coat and I should be good .I think the trick here is to make sure the surface is well sanded and then impeccably cleaned and being very careful not to bump or touch the surface also works slot better if you are inside a garage or enclosed space so wind isn't blowing the sprayed product away from the surface it is intended to protect make sure your cans are well shaken at all times .

One of those paraffin hand treatment gadgets (the kind that heat the paraffin and you dunk your hand in) is great for this. The paraffin they supply comes mixed with mineral oil and your hands come out wonderfully soothed and greased up. You can use regular paraffin and just add some mineral oil after you use up the blocks supplied with the gadget. they are very heap at Walmart or Target or?

If the gloves are made of latex, he might have developed a latex allergy. In that case, hydrocortisone cream might help.

I agree with Oldroser. We have a nice wax dip, VERY nice for your hands. Best way to use it...
1. purchase
a. wax machine
b. baggies...gallon size cheap baggies, not zip lock
c. 2 cheap oven mitts
d.get some nice hand lotion

Now this is best to have a friend/someone at least help: put hand lotion on, don't have to work in too well, dip in wax oh about 3-4 times (wait a few seconds between dips..until wax is not shiney anymore), have someone help you put the baggie on your hand..put the oven mitt over your hand. Repeat with other hand. LEave on 15-20 minutes. Take off oven mitt, peal off wax into plastic bag, toss. You'll love how your hands feel! Repeat as often as you wish. Personally I like the professional wax

I just starte using Burt's Bees hand repair cream. Amazing stuff - it's the one that comes in the purple tube. I had some places on my hands that were cracked and bleeding and just wouldn't clear up. I used it every day for several days and it cleared right up. Now I use it all of the time.

I like Neutrogena hand cream. I agree, have him wear cotton gloves to bed after slathering lots of the cream on. This will help a lot.

I strongly recommend Moisturel cream (not the lotion), which my dermatologist told me to use. It's the only thing that works on my (formerly) cracked, bleeding hands, and I tried a lot of other creams and lotions.

Moisturel can be hard to find, as only real drugstores carry it; the places that sell lawn furniture, etc., don't usually have it. You can get it on drugstore.com, though. It's not cheap, but you can save a lot of money by buying the larger size jar.
