Internet direct bookshelf speakers

I am looking for a 5.1 speaker system for my large great room. It has cathedral ceilings which is a problem.

I looked at Bose, and they sound good to me but I think they are over priced.

I have to apologize. I posted a similar question and it is not appearing on the list so I think it was lost somehow.

I hope I'm not duplicating a question.

I was hoping someone had experience with some of the internet companies that sell bookshelf speakers.

I am not looking for earth shaking sound but

enhanced music and dialog I can actually hear.

I plan on getting a sub-woofer but it won't be what most audio folks desire. This is my family room not the theater room.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I have no experience with such speakers, but I would make sure that any speakers I bought unheard could be returned within, say, a month, for any reason short of outright abuse, preferably with the vendor footing the tab for shipping.

The company's that seem to be getting good reviews have a 30 - 45 day return policy. Right now I am very interested in the SVS speakers. They have had the best response to all my questions. Covered every aspect of the project and have a lot of confidence in their product.

I will need a receiver so I'm just beginning to learn about them. I'm perplexed over the features and whether I will know what to do with it all. I'm going to do a search to see if I can learn what "upconverting" is and HDMi capablities means. I have an HDMi display so I should consider this.

Owbitz, I don't have a System category on my control panel. There's one for sound, but nothing for device mgr. RavenCajun, Secunia showed that I might have a problem loading Java Applet, but, found no other problems. Question about checking my plug in the back? I haven't a clue where it is located or where it should be. cat, it's good to "see" you, girl! On the digital life site, I ran regedit on the Run command. Under Drivers 32, I found wavemapper to be "regular size" whatever that means! Have no idea how to acquire this driver. I couldn't find it anywhere in my Windows file. Tks to everyone for your advice. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A follow up: I am extremely happy with this wireless Logitech DJ. Piece of cake to set up. No problem from the Denon to the slave amp and beyond. Very, very nice remote. I am amazed that I can use the remote to select any song and hear it anywhere around the house (speakers in kitchen, and outside are on same system). WOW. Easy to navigate my 4000+ song library by artist, genre, album, etc. Even plays existing playlists with option to edit playlists on the fly. All with the remote. Very cool. I do think the USB connecting wires could be longer, especially because of the directives to place the streaming unit X feet away from the desktop computer AND from any existing router (sheesh, then give me more than 5 feet to work with already!). I had to relocate some things to eliminate noise. And I get a rare hiccup in the stream. No biggie. Rearranging my USB connections to make this puppy a direct connect out the desktop (rather than hub) may help that. The negatives (short wireless range and only one receiver at a time) are not factors for me in my setup. So it is perfect for what I wanted. Getting Windows Media Player to learn and save Live365 Internet stations was a little dicey for me. Trying to merge Live365 Internet radio (new to me) and the Logitech DJ (also new to me) with the Windows Media Player was a stumble. Had to save stations one by one. But I now can scroll through 27 saved stations on the remote - from Mississippi blues to Reggae dancehall to Celtic traditional to South American classical guitar. Thousands more out there to add if I want. Wonderful. Fabulous. I'm loving this! Almost happy the last local classical radio station folded and led me into this journey. Best $89 I've spent in a long, long time. And thank you Steve for your help.

As part of my kitchen remodel, I lost space for my beloved floor standing Monitor Audio speakers. I replaced them with ceiling speakers from Niles, model CM963. I paid $750 for the pair. They are 3-way speakers with a 9'' woofer. The tweeter sits on an adjustable member to allow directional adjustment up to 20 deg. Although the base response of these speakers is pretty good, I decided to finally add a subwoofer to my system. I knew I would prefer to place the SW in my bookshelf so I wanted a speaker that was no deeper than 13''. After some auditions, I bought a Monitor Audio VW8 for $365. It is a powered amplifier (so it needs to be plugged in to an outlet). Cross-over frequency can be adjusted, and it has a separate volume control. I found this small subwoofer did a very nice job of adding some needed base without drawing attention to itself. I have only had these speakers installed for a few days now, and so far I find them a pleasure to listen to. I would not go so far to say they are as good as the floor standing speakers they replaced. When I listen to music, I'm typically moving around the house, so perfect speaker placement and quality isn't as important (unlike my younger days!). When watching movies, a hefty portion of the sound comes from the center speaker, so if you have a good one the left/right ceiling speakers are not as critical. Sorry for this last bit if I offend anyone, but I really dislike the Bose brand. I think they are way over hyped. Jon

Hi Carol, I am building out my hometheater in a basement and can help you a little on your speaker/placement issue since I have researched the topic. You have a giant space that you want filled with sound. Given your layout, for TV/Movie watching, I would stick with a 2.1 or 3.1 system (Front R, Center Channel, Front L) and the .1 is the subwoofer. Your rear speakers (for a 5.1 sytstem) are too far away to be used in that manner. Also, given how big your space is, you would need a massive subwoofer or 2 to properly pressurize the room for theater type bass. However, that doesnt mean you cant enjoy some of the bass. Proper placement of a subwoofer involves doing a subcrawl, however, for your purposes, I would probably place it in a corner maybe under the TV. This is will give you some "corner loading" which can maximize some bass (although its more "boomy" rather than a nice even bass sound". Don't put the sub in a cabinet. Ideally, you want the center channel directly under or over the TV aimed out the main listening position so you perceive the dialogue as coming from the TV. Now you also stated that your husband wants music and if you want music in your den and in the dining room, I would put two speakers in the dining room area and hook these up to the "zone 2" section of your receiver. That will allow you to play music in your den and dining room at the same time or each area independently (the midrange recievers, <$600, will allow you to play the SAME source in each zone. If you want to play two different sources, you will need to spend more). If this were my floorplan, this is how I would do it, even though you will have to sacrifice a "true 5.1" setup because your space doesnt really allow it, unless you are willing to put two in ceiling speakers (as rears) above the wing back chairs or speakers on stands behind the wingbacks. Now for products. Receiver: Get a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver with Zone 2 functionality. Denon, Yamaha It seems like you want things discreet, so I would recommend bookshelf speakers. While small, you can achieve great sound for your space. Ideally, you want matching speakers for your FR, C, and FL. There are a million speaker companys out ethere. These are in a good price range, recommended often around the internet. And as a disclaimer, I am in no means a pro or audiophile, these are just some ideas I came across in planning my own room.

Hi , Most ID ( iternet direct )companies provide you with a 30 day in home listening option. You can return them without any questions asked. Most require you to pay the return shipping .
I found my way to the AV123 site, they are one of the more popular ID companies . I went with the 850 Rockets, and the matching center channel. They are built like a piece a furniture and hey they sound great also.
Sign up for their forum and ask your question there. You will not find a nice bunch of audio guys willing to help you.
Also atke a look at Aperion speaker and Axiom speaker, both popular ID companies.
Regardless of where you post, you'll need to provide some more info. Actual room size and cieling height, what type of reciever will you power the speakers with etc..
It sounds like your room might do better with a pair of tower speakers, bookshelves might get lost in your room ( sound wise )

The names you mention are familiar to me. I didn't know AV123 has a forum. I will check it out.

This is off topic (sort of), but I am having trouble discerning which receiver is right for me without spending $$$$. Should I post a separate question?

Our LCD screen is HDMI with 1080p. Does that mean I should invest in a receiver that upconverts to 1080p?
I sound so clueless. I haven't had a chance to go to Borders and read "audio/visual for dummies" yet.
What I have found out is that Denon hasn't come out with the AVR-2808 which swithches to 1080. Also some receivers just aren't that good at switching. Keep in mind I don't even know what this means.lol I dread buying a receiver and finding the menu so confusing that I don't set it up correctly.

It seems logical that if my display has those capabilities I should get a receiver with the ability to switch.

TM, They ahve a great forum, Seriously a real bunch of intelligent audio guys. You might even get a response from Mark who is on the forum daily and according do reports is the nicest guy in the world.
Sign up for the forum, and post your question in the "loudspeaker and subwoofer" section. Like I said give as much info about room size, TV, how much movie viewing to regular 2 channel listening you'll be doing. As well ask about reciever recomendations . I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome ,knowledge and information you will recieve from this group.
