in-ceiling speakers

I can't find the original post where I asked about in-ceiling speakers and 2 people recommended the HTD HD-R80 high definition speakers. After reading the reviews, it seems that just about everyone raved about them. The only negative was that some said they lacked enough bass. Is there an in-ceiling sub-woofer to accompany these speakers?

Has anyone listened to the Bose 791 in-ceiling speakers? Big difference in price: $539 for the Bose and $179 for the HD-R80's. Anyone think that it's worth it?

We mainly listen to piano music and other classical.

Any thoughts out there?

We listen to all sorts of music, but I don't think our kitchen has the best acoustical architecture, so I'm not sure how much difference
more expensive speakers would make. I guess you'd have to be a real audiofile. We went with the Moderno speakers from Best Buy. I have
been happy with them. They are a little more than the HD, but less than the Bose you listed. I was able to listen to them at a Best Buy
before purchasing.

DH Here...We have a house full of in ceiling and in wall speakers from OEM Systems located in Sparks, NV. They are the best value for the money. If you buy Bose you are paying for a ton of advertising and not much more. I would suggest you visit the following website and call then for advice. www.oemsystems.com

I would stick with PS-601 or PS-801 for the in ceiling. The 801's are larger 8", and give you a little better mid-range and base if you do not have a sub-woofer. They also make an in ceiling sub-woofer but I would get a small Velodyne floor model. If you are angling music to a spot in the room, the PS-815 LCRS's are outstanding.

If money is now object, go for their top of the line. I think it is either Preference of Presence, (can't remember but you can call them). They are a little more than twice the price of the Architect Series but the sound quality is stunning.

Their speakers are sold on Amazon.com as well as on Ebay. They are about half or more less than what you pay for over priced 'big name' speakers in some big box store.

Contemporary whole house audio systems do allow each room (or zone) to play from a different source at a different level. That said, the initial reasoning for these systems - allowing the use of expensively acquired music throughout the house - is somewhat anachronistic now that one has virtually the entirety of recorded music available for $9.99/month. But it is aesthetically pleasing to have speakers hidden away in the ceilings, and controls from just a one gang keypad and/or entirely hidden away on your phone.

If installing a TV, spec out your TV size, determine vert. & horiz lengths, pull a wire left & right and center (above or below TV depending on TV location, fireplace, etc.). Leave extra wire so you can decide on whether or not you want in-wall or "on-wall" speakers. For "in-ceiling" LCRs, space accordingly in reference to your TV center. Install left and right in-ceiling or in-wall surrounds in reference to your seating area. Without knowing the layout of your room, I can't specify exact distances, the above are just generalities and are based upon a installing a flat panel TV, not a projection screen. Sub-woofer placement - although low frequencies are omni-directional, they always have a "sweet spot" - to be on the safe side, for powered subs, pull two RG6 cables, far left & right corner front of room. Also, maybe pull two 14/2 wires in the event you're using an in-wall mono-sub with an external amp. This will allow you to use either location for the best placement of sub. Two subs are always better but not always needed. make sure the contractor installs AC receptacles in these areas as well. Room aesthetics are most certainly are a factor - know where the furniture is being placed. There are also wireless options if things get rough and go south after the fact - Sunfire makes a decent wireless sub kit if you have to go that route. There are lots of others options to consider for speakers such as installing "back' speakers for 7.1, Dolby Atmos front height speakers, it all depends upon your final design. And yes #16 wire will work, but have your contractor pull at least #14 speaker wire. Don't forget a few CAT6 wires (for HDMI extenders if needed, network data & control) behind the TV. A dedicated media closet would be nice for your components, but a quality low profile audio cabinet will work fine - such as Salamander Design. Pre-wire as much as you can - pre-wiring is cheaper than opening up walls later on - it's all up to you. Plan the work, work the plan. -FP

It is very smart to have the pre-wire done as part of the build process. It will save you time and headache later. Origin Acoustic speakers are great. One of the most / only innovative speaker company's around. I don't know which model, but all of their speakers are very good (just make sure they are not the "contractor series". Wired is always better than wireless. There are no true wireless 5.1 speakers systems. They all require power and that means wires will show VS in-ceiling speakers where no wires show and you will barely notice the speakers visually. Not sure you need connection to your "VCR". But you do want wires run to make sure the cable box and the surround sound receiver and amplifiers for the house audio can be in the same location with wires running to the TV location (preferably 1 cat 6, 1 cat 6 shielded, 1 fiber optic wire) With this wiring set up, you can call any local professional (audio, video / home automation / home theater company) who can make sure you are up and running.

So, yes, I spoke to 2 good AV specialists and they all recommend the 7 wired speakers for best sound- wireless are not as reliable for where we are...but they obviously aren't considering the lighting in the room per se. The light won't have dangling pieces, just one solid piece that will be a few feet from the ceiling . I just wanted to know if anyone, maybe an av specialist here, has this current setup and if they've had any issues.

As part of my kitchen remodel, I lost space for my beloved floor standing Monitor Audio speakers. I replaced them with ceiling speakers from Niles, model CM963. I paid $750 for the pair. They are 3-way speakers with a 9'' woofer. The tweeter sits on an adjustable member to allow directional adjustment up to 20 deg. Although the base response of these speakers is pretty good, I decided to finally add a subwoofer to my system. I knew I would prefer to place the SW in my bookshelf so I wanted a speaker that was no deeper than 13''. After some auditions, I bought a Monitor Audio VW8 for $365. It is a powered amplifier (so it needs to be plugged in to an outlet). Cross-over frequency can be adjusted, and it has a separate volume control. I found this small subwoofer did a very nice job of adding some needed base without drawing attention to itself.

I have only had these speakers installed for a few days now, and so far I find them a pleasure to listen to. I would not go so far to say they are as good as the floor standing speakers they replaced. When I listen to music, I'm typically moving around the house, so perfect speaker placement and quality isn't as important (unlike my younger days!). When watching movies, a hefty portion of the sound comes from the center speaker, so if you have a good one the left/right ceiling speakers are not as critical.

Sorry for this last bit if I offend anyone, but I really dislike the Bose brand. I think they are way over hyped.

Ceiling speakers usually need an extra sub even with claims of those with built in subs. I have a few of the HTD R80's ceiling speakers with my setup mix of some free standing. For a sub check out the reviews on the Aperion's. These subs can be a bit pricey but in my opinion you will not find a more natural sounding base out there. I have the "big" guy because I have high ceilings and a long room but you may not need that. If you get on the Aperion site you can sometimes save a $100 on open box items.
The R80's ceiling speakers are not the very best you can buy but they are very very good for the money as you are buying direct and pretty much skipping the middle man. I'm not sure how Aperion is marketing these days but a few years ago they had no middle man either. I prefer to buy this way as in my case I got much more bang for my buck. The service you get with aperion is fantastic. Again, I'm not sure about "now" but when I bought my sub everything was wrapped in velvet fabric, the packaging was so nice it made the purchase even more exciting because they cared so much. I have turned a lot of guys on to aperion subs (although they will not admit) now they walk around bragging like they thought of it.

I'm very late on this post but thought I'd try and see if anyone has new info on this topic. I'm looking at all the speakers listed so far, albeit a few years later. The HTD-HD R80's look appealing. Can still get at around $90 each/ $180 a pair. Beats out the Bose 791's which are running $600 a pair.
Those Aperion sub-woofers are pricey, starting around $400 US and going way up from there. Think I'll go without for now.
I've converted a living room / kitchen into one ~25' X 25' lounge. We would like to have the speakers hidden in the ceiling and are considering 4 of the R 80's at this point. Might add a 5th for a centre speaker.

If anyone has any new advice to add I'd appreciate your input. Maybe there's something newer out there or some changes to the products listed since this post started. Thanks,
