See if this works:
Click on tools in the browser then:
Go to internet options, then advanced settings. scroll down to multimedia and there will be a check/uncheck box next to the sentence play sounds in webpages. click on the box and you should have sound.

Here's what I have on the internet options you suggested:

Advanced

General: All about accessibility

Browsing: About configuration

Network: How to handle offline storage

Update: Updates for Firefox

Encription: Options for SSL3.0 or TLS 1.0 I have the first checked. Also contains info about certifcates.

Nothing there about multimedia.

Then, I went to Internet Explorer and performed the same function. Both "play sounds in web pages & videos are checked.

I tried a website with a video & sound in IE and still no sound. The video plays just fine.

Any other suggestions?

If the problem just occurred recently try a System restore to a time when things were working that is:

Start, programs, accessories, system tools choose System restore and follow the directions.

Zep, I've had this problem for a loooong time. Doing a system restore would require a year or more and I don't think that would help. Besides, I might lose something "vital", lol. Tks for the idea, tho.

This is baffling to say the least.

The nice thing about system restore is you can undo it if not happy with the results and return to the last place you were, but your right probably would not be effective.

Not sure what the issue is I'll look around and others may have a clue.

I think this happened to my daughter's PC once and it turned out that she had an old version of Adobe Flash player installed. Updating the flash plugin fixed it for her. I think she had to reboot after updating the plugin, but she may have only had to restart all her browsers (and not let them restore prior session).

Zep, according to that site I needed THIRTY TREE updates which would cost $30. to install.

I went to the Realtek AC97 Audio which is what's on this computer and updated the driver. Still no sound.

bpgreen, I recently got the new version of Adobe Flash player, but, I'll certainly ck into that again.

Have you had a look in the Device manager? Click Start/Control panel/System/Hardware/Device manager. Scroll down and double click on Sounds, video and game controllers. Now look for any yellow exclamation or question marks. There should not be any seeing you updated the drivers.

Take a look at the link below, there are some interesting ideas to consider. Even the one that suggests you may have the connectors in the wrong sockets should not be overlooked.

make sure you get the appropriate adobe flash for the browser you are using you need to get one for each browser type you have.
try running secunia tool and see what it is saying needs updating.

Owbitz, I don't have a System category on my control panel. There's one for sound, but nothing for device mgr.

RavenCajun, Secunia showed that I might have a problem loading Java Applet, but, found no other problems.

Question about checking my plug in the back? I haven't a clue where it is located or where it should be.

On the digital life site, I ran regedit on the Run command. Under Drivers 32, I found wavemapper to be "regular size" whatever that means! Have no idea how to acquire this driver. I couldn't find it anywhere in my Windows file.

Go back to zep's link and read the article and you will find the above link and the instructions, you can use it rather than doing a hands on registry edit.

in reference to the plug in back we mean where you have plugged in your computer speakers they must be plugged into
the line-out plug NOT the line in, they look similar but if you have it plugged in the wrong one it will not work.

I had to wait for my DH to help me move the computer out from the wall and he adjusted the plug and Voila! I have sound! Woo Hoo!
