The complaints talked about dogs also, the article seems to be saying only cat food is being recalled. Anyone have updates about the dog food?

This is the notice my vet sent, which remarks on dogs. The Nutro site only has a recall for cat foods. If I had a dog, I would not feed the dog food either since consumers are noting sick dogs also. Nutro was involved in the other big recall (2007?) with China suppliers adding a melamine filler to their products.

I switched from Nutro to Innova almost two years ago. It's a much better choice with a great balance of protein, vitamins, fatty acids and microorganisms. My dogs are super muscular and sleek. It's kind of expensive ($30lb bag for $50) and hard to find (not at the grocery store or Petsmart), I have to go to a feed store in another town to buy it.

Nutro is no better than that Purina junk.

I had switched from Chicken Soup to Nutro for Sensitive Skin because my dog was having skin issues. He was okay while I was transitioning 1/2 & 1/2 and then, within a few weeks of total Nutro, he started having siezures. First we thought breathing/trachea issues, then epilepsy - we went on several vet visits. I put him on canned Purina food (because I could pick it up quick) just to make eating easier. His seizures stopped. I switched from Nutro and he is fine now. I'm pretty sure it was Nutro, but had not made the connection while he was going through all this. I thought several times he was taking his last breath. Scary.

I use Chicken Soup sometimes, and another food, forgot the name but it has salmon, but mostly I feed raw.
It's scary what is put into food both pet and human, accidentally and not so accidentally.

Wow, that's really frightening, Mango. I'd definitely stay away from it with dogs, too. That company has been involved in at least two recalls now, too. My vet said that some of these companies actually knew that the ingredient of the last recall (wheat gluten was it?) was being filled with melamine to cut costs.

He feels Wellness food is the very best. Though he specializes in cats, it does speak for the quality of their food in general. More expensive, of course.

Thank you for posting this Squirrelheaven - I sent it on to a friend who I knew fed her cats Nutro in the past. Turns out she had switched to a locally made pet food awhile back.

After the last pet food recall I put my dogs - 2 german shepherd mixes - on a food recommended & sold by my vet. Now they're both eating a MediCal (Royal Canin) food formulated for 'mobility support' for dogs with joint problems, arthritis, etc. My oldest has had ACL surgery twice in the last year on one of her hind legs. I hope the food is helping - - it costs me $118 for a 33LB bag. :)

Squirrel, After we adopted our 14 month old cat a few weeks ago, we started gradually adding Wellness dry to the cheap food she was used to eating. She hates it. She'll eat some of the flavors of the wet (not the sardine, crab and lobster mixture).

I'll keep trying.

My kids only eat the wet. Today, they don't like the Salmon & Trout flavor they loved before. They seem to want Natural Balance Salmon only right now! which is Dick Van Patten's food (supposed to be pretty good according to the pet forum). Maybe the Trout is throwing them off flavor-wise :/ What a group.

Wow, Rilie, I thought $50/bag for the dry hypoallergenic stuff that my one cat eats a bit of was pretty bad.

Lol, I just picked up a couple of cans of the Dick Van Patten food. One duck and one venison...cuz it sounded good to *me*.

Oh boy. My allergic cat ate like never before with the rabbit. That's been discontinued. So we went to duck. Wowsers! Tired of it a bit, but took to venison like lightning. Now we kind of juggle things, according to fancy, because they do tire of eating the same thing every single day! This guy was eating some prescription cardboard substance before and is now putting some weight back on : )

I've never seen them enjoy food so much as with these new delicacies and/or better quality foods. Makes me feel good because eating is one of their devine pleasures in life : )

I think cats tend to be less finicky when there are other cats around who will clean up.

My two small dogs get Wellness. It would be expensive if I had big dogs. But no health problems at all.

Squirrelheaven, yes, it's expensive.... I'm in Canada - I think everything costs more up here.

The 2 surgeries were expensive too, even though our vet treated us very, very well..... *I hope* this food will help prevent any more of them. :) I have noticed a significant change in the older one's fur & coat. She's fluffy just like a puppy again. And I wasn't feeding them 'cheap' food before.

Plus - who am I kidding - those 2 mutts are my babies. :) So I do what I have to for their contentment and health.

One of my newer adoptions coat went silky smooth with the better foods here than she was getting at the rescue (donation foods). I've also noticed, most recently, with the even better foods I've been getting since the dermatologist got involved, that one of my long-time kitty's coat now is nice and soft. She just always had a funny kind of fur even though I wasn't feeding her cheap food. It's significantly better with all the better foods that are good for allergic animals.

I just remembered how upset my vet gets with the commercial food companies that start offering the ~exotic~ meat proteins over-the-counter. Rabbit, duck, and venison were proteins that the animals hadn't been exposed to before, so were used in prescription foods for animals who had developed food allergies (very common). But when the otc brands start using those meats, exposing the general population, the docs can no longer rely on those food sources in treating animals with food allergy problems.

Squirrel - my vet says the very same thing about the "exotic" meats. Says they were never intended as a better food for allergy-prone dogs, just something they could use to isolate and track down the real culprit. (Thus the lamb/venison Nutro we bought for "sensitive skin" was BS.) Ugh.

We use the Dick Van Patten food (natural balance) for our yorki-poo. The kind that comes in rolls, looks like summer sausage. Several flavors and the pup seems to really like it. She does get chicken breast also. The dry food we use (and she likes!) is Nutro. She's very picky with the dry foods, guess I'll start looking again.

my kidlets eat Science diet lamb and rice lite for large breeds. We switched them over a couple of months ago from Nutro large breed as regular walks weren't slimming them down enough. No problems with the Nutro. I know that in 2007 it was the canned cat food from Nutro included in the melamine scandal according to the FDA site.
Now who knows what company is next for quality control problems or at the mercy of the Chinese? Nutro wasn't cheap and had a good reputation as well.

We were feeding Nutro to our dog and both our cats until a few months ago, when we switched to Veterinarian Formulated brand (dry food, we use Friskies and Alpo wet food). We never had a problem with Nutro, and they all liked it just fine. But I was given samples of VF at the feed store, and my pets seemed to like it better. I'm really glad we switched before this recall on Nutro.

anyone use dry Hills Science dog foods?

Science Diet dry adult dog food has corn as its first ingredient. Corn allergies are common in golden retrievers (which I have). I use dog food that primarily consists of meat protein. Most recently he has been on grain-free foods - first Evo, now Taste of the Wild.

Science Diet foods are some of the worst available, full of grains and fillers. Vets push it because Hills funds many vet schools, not because it's healthy. A "don't bite the hand that feeds you" kind of thing. There are much better options, even for some the prescription foods they sell.

My dog has eaten the Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance - great food and he loves the logs - I'll buy the log and cut it up and put 6-8 squares on top of the dry.

He's getting a little chunky, so I switched to the lower calorie version of the Natural balance and instead of the logs bought some frozen raw dog food - the pet store said it would be less calories than the Natural Balance Logs.

but, it's sortof gross to chop up the biscuit size raw thingys. I don't think I'll do the raw after this bag is gone. It stinks!

My cat who I just switched to canned cat food was on Science Diet Prescrition CD cat food - He was nutritionally starved. I think he was becoming diabetic - lost the luster in his fur and lost a lot of weight. Now this happened slowly over time, but since I've switched his food he's a new cat, gained weight and is much perkier. I feel very guilty about feeding him Science Diet all these years.

Rudy has always been on a premium food. We used to feed Wellness, but he likes the Natural Balance and it agrees with him, so we're happy for now.

My ibd allergic cat is able to eat both the Wellness and Natural Balance foods without throwing them up! That is amazing for him.

Squirrel, just wanted to let you know that I stuck with the Wellness and she's eating it fine, now.

Don't even have to add any of the cheap food to get her to dig in. :)

That's great, Parma. They do get funny from time to time. I think mine were being picky with the change over to hot weather. The allergic one is hooked on Natural Balance Salmon right now, but the others are back to eating the venison again (good, cause I had a bunch left over). Next time I get to the vet, I'll pick up more Wellness. He actually sells it $.10 per can cheaper than the discount store.

She's one beautiful and lucky girl! And I'm so glad you're a SAHM : ) She must be in heaven.
