RECALL Cat food! Nutro Natural Choice & Nutro Max dry food

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) -- Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTROÂ® NATURAL CHOICEÂ® COMPLETE CAREÂ® Dry Cat Foods and NUTROÂ® MAXÂ® Cat Dry Foods with "Best If Used By Dates" between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

This issue was identified during an audit of our documentation from the supplier. An extensive review confirmed that only these two premixes were affected. This recall does not affect any NUTROÂ® dog food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.

Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTROÂ® dry cat food product. Cat owners who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.

Thanks Tally! This is the food I feed my cats. I don't know the dates on mine. As soon as I buy it I transfer it into an airtight bin, info is on the bag. I'll throw it out just in case. I buy 20lb bags. Wonder how/if they'll refund it without a bag.

This got my attention. I just had 2 whole pallets of the pouches, both adult cat and kitten food, donated to me a few days ago. Glad to see it wasn't the wet food.

My dog has eaten the Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance - great food and he loves the logs - I'll buy the log and cut it up and put 6-8 squares on top of the dry. He's getting a little chunky, so I switched to the lower calorie version of the Natural balance and instead of the logs bought some frozen raw dog food - the pet store said it would be less calories than the Natural Balance Logs. but, it's sortof gross to chop up the biscuit size raw thingys. I don't think I'll do the raw after this bag is gone. It stinks! My cat who I just switched to canned cat food was on Science Diet Prescrition CD cat food - He was nutritionally starved. I think he was becoming diabetic - lost the luster in his fur and lost a lot of weight. Now this happened slowly over time, but since I've switched his food he's a new cat, gained weight and is much perkier. I feel very guilty about feeding him Science Diet all these years. Rudy has always been on a premium food. We used to feed Wellness, but he likes the Natural Balance and it agrees with him, so we're happy for now.

One more reason not to feed Ol' Roy. Or Laura Lynn which I bet is worse. But all those poor animals...it's heartbreaking and so difficult for the fur babies parents.

What premium cat food hasn't been recalled?

Nancy - that isn't true. Several of the brands that had recalls over the last week did not have the ingredients on their label. Several of them are claiming that American Nutrition added the rice protein without their knowledge. Is that true? Who knows. But the ingredients were NOT on the labels. Examples: * Natural Balance - Venison products - the cat product specifically said it included no rice. Yet, it was recalled for rice protein. The blogs managed to catch their web page as they quickly updated it right after the recall to show the new ingredient. * Blue Buffalo - claims American Nutrition added the rice protein without their knowledge and according to their press releases has stopped producing with AN. * Diamond - had a statement on their web page that rice protein concentrate was not used in any of their products. Yet they recalled three products this week (two under Diamond label, two under Chicken Soup label) because they included Rice Protein. These also made by American Nutrition. So, what can I recommend at this time knowing that labels can lie? I personally would avoid any product made by American Nutrition - this would include their own brands as well as Breeder's Choice, even though they are not recalled. I feed Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice to 8 of our 11 dogs. They are all different breeds and mixes and range in age from 2 to about 10. Our senior German shepherd has a very touchy tummy and this is the one dog food that doesn't make him sick. I hate feeding any commercial food but can't figure out a way to feed a crew as big as ours any other way. Nutro changed hands not long ago and I don't know if this is a problem. I would think right now with the poisonings that any dog food company that wants to be thought of as being "good" would be very very careful. I noticed that one dog who got sick on it when to Nutro weight control and that contains corn. Her dog may be sensitive to corn and that caused the upset. I will keep a close eye on mine but as of today they are all fine. The ones who don't eat Nutro are my senior Shih tzus and their pup who decided a while back not to eat it and wanted something better. At the moment they are eating Prarie organic fish but that seems to be on its way out. Oh, golly, not again. It seems like every week, something is being recalled. I remember the other pet food scare, a year or so ago. My kitty was still with us then and I just bought a bunch of it at Walmart. They took it back and gave me a refund. Makes a person wonder every time we put something in our mouths or our pets mouth, whats safe. Dottie

I felt pretty good about this because when I picked it up at the SPCA in Houston, they told me that Nutro is very good food, and I saw that it was made in USA. I guess you just never know.

It does make you wonder what to do these days. With the e-coli in hamburger I now buy something ground at the store or meat market and freeze it for a week or so. Let someone else get sick first! And I usually buy a lot of pet food so it sits for a while and I always buy a premium to super-premium food in which I have a lot of confidence. That doesn't mean that problems can't happen though. And in fairness, Nutro is a pretty good, middle-of-the-road food maker. I tried it a couple times but I get better food for the same or less so I don't use it anymore. Again, in fairness, this was a mistake.

It's sad though that they don't give some info on what the possible affects of too much vitamins can be. Often, with water-soluble vitamins, it'll just leave unused. Not sure how it works in this case though.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll pass it along to people who might be affected.
