RECALL Cat food! Nutro Natural Choice & Nutro Max dry food

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) -- Today, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTROÂ® NATURAL CHOICEÂ® COMPLETE CAREÂ® Dry Cat Foods and NUTROÂ® MAXÂ® Cat Dry Foods with "Best If Used By Dates" between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

This issue was identified during an audit of our documentation from the supplier. An extensive review confirmed that only these two premixes were affected. This recall does not affect any NUTROÂ® dog food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.

Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTROÂ® dry cat food product. Cat owners who have questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.

Thanks Tally! This is the food I feed my cats. I don't know the dates on mine. As soon as I buy it I transfer it into an airtight bin, info is on the bag. I'll throw it out just in case. I buy 20lb bags. Wonder how/if they'll refund it without a bag.

This got my attention. I just had 2 whole pallets of the pouches, both adult cat and kitten food, donated to me a few days ago. Glad to see it wasn't the wet food.

I'm feeding my cat Purina and so far none of their catfood is on the list as far as I know. But they just added Purina's Alpo (dogfood) and they already had another kind of their dogfood on there. I also heard that the first kind of dry food has appeared on the list...can't remember what, but it wasn't a Purina product. I'm getting paranoid about this and am considering switching to the kitty foods at the health food stores or something. My congressman is going to get a letter about this mess! And I think everyone who loves their pets should do that also. I love my kitties and every time I buy catfood I think...could this kill them? Could it make them sick? It should never have happened! Sooo entirely preventable! If I had known that the petfood companies allowed stuff from China in their products, I'd have realized how dangerous that would be and I'm not a genius. Now, why didn't THEY know? Or DID THEY KNOW?

Where do you live, region if you are uncomfortable with particular State. Also, what does the vet think? My guys eat Nutro, in fact I am in need of more food at the moment. I intend to check the ingredient list closely for the wheat gluten since it has now come to light that the wheat gluten used by Menu Foods was obtained from a source out of the United States where the use of rat poison is not prohibited? Well if it is prohibited here in the US, why are we buying wheat gluten that has rat poison in it. The question is rhetorical, of course, since there is no answer that would be acceptable to this petowner. Geez, if my dogs are affected I am going to be one pi$$ed petowner. I feel so badly for those pets and petowners affected. For any animal to suffer because of the food it is being fed is just unacceptable in my book. I hope Menu Foods has it's head handed to it on a very ugly platter. I am actually tempted to switch foods altogether to a food not manufactured by Menu, but my dogs have done well on Nutro. What to do????

I feed Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice to 8 of our 11 dogs. They are all different breeds and mixes and range in age from 2 to about 10. Our senior German shepherd has a very touchy tummy and this is the one dog food that doesn't make him sick. I hate feeding any commercial food but can't figure out a way to feed a crew as big as ours any other way. Nutro changed hands not long ago and I don't know if this is a problem. I would think right now with the poisonings that any dog food company that wants to be thought of as being "good" would be very very careful. I noticed that one dog who got sick on it when to Nutro weight control and that contains corn. Her dog may be sensitive to corn and that caused the upset. I will keep a close eye on mine but as of today they are all fine. The ones who don't eat Nutro are my senior Shih tzus and their pup who decided a while back not to eat it and wanted something better. At the moment they are eating Prarie organic fish but that seems to be on its way out. joepyeweed, you just described my feed store, do we live in the same town? The only thing that makes me think we don't is that our feed store doesn't carry the dog meds, unfortuantely, I have to get the Advantage and Interceptor from my vet:)). I guess the thing is that I feel very strongly in supporting the local business owners (most of whom I know personally) so that we don't lose the "home town/community feel". Try to ask a question in a Petsmart or a Petco, or Jake's Dog House, three places I never buy anything from, but places I hear complaints of employees having no idea or knowledge of what is being sold or why for that matter. They don't even want to know. They are just collecting their mimimum hourly wage and watching the clock untill their shift is over. In fact, I will tell you that I find the local Petsmart beyond unsanitary. I recently contacted the Board of Health after my DD, while shopping for a toy, slipped in a pile of about 15 piles of dog poop throughout the store on a Friday evening. I tried calling to speak with the manager the following morning about the matter before calling the appropriate authority, but the kid just didn't get that it is unsanitary at best to have defication and urination in place that sells food, albeit pet food. "Petsmart's policy is that pets are a member of the family" is their motto, which he repeated ad nasuem. I asked what his feeling was about the cleanliness issue was, he responded "yes there are a few inconsiderate pet owners". If the store is willing to clean up after "inconsiderate petowners" then I wouldn't have so much of a problem with his answer. Just another reason I refuse to buy into the big chain stores.

Oh, golly, not again. It seems like every week, something is being recalled. I remember the other pet food scare, a year or so ago. My kitty was still with us then and I just bought a bunch of it at Walmart. They took it back and gave me a refund. Makes a person wonder every time we put something in our mouths or our pets mouth, whats safe. Dottie

I felt pretty good about this because when I picked it up at the SPCA in Houston, they told me that Nutro is very good food, and I saw that it was made in USA. I guess you just never know.

It does make you wonder what to do these days. With the e-coli in hamburger I now buy something ground at the store or meat market and freeze it for a week or so. Let someone else get sick first! And I usually buy a lot of pet food so it sits for a while and I always buy a premium to super-premium food in which I have a lot of confidence. That doesn't mean that problems can't happen though. And in fairness, Nutro is a pretty good, middle-of-the-road food maker. I tried it a couple times but I get better food for the same or less so I don't use it anymore. Again, in fairness, this was a mistake.

It's sad though that they don't give some info on what the possible affects of too much vitamins can be. Often, with water-soluble vitamins, it'll just leave unused. Not sure how it works in this case though.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll pass it along to people who might be affected.
