If in doubt, call the company and make them listen to you as you read every code to them.

I don't know if science diet is the same, but for Iams and Eukenuba the numbers listed mean two different things. The recalled foods are numbers 6339-7073 followed by 4197. My fiance works for a pet and pet supply retail location and told me that they were told to go to the manufacturer web sites and when we did there was a link to explain what the numbers mean. the 6339-7073 was the date code for when the food was manufactured and processed and the other code represents the plant where the food was sent from. I am sure that science diet's codes are similar.

I had the same issue where some of my numbers matched and some didn't- I FINALLY got through to someone at the IAMs 800 number today and said that only if all the numbers match up do I have affected food.

Frankly though- I don't think I want to take my chances. I am going to find some of these cat recipes that people talk about and try cooking for her, and stick with the dry food for awhile. I usually buy my baby's food in bulk, and when I went through and checked everything in my cupboard only 2 of her pouches matched. I know she had already eaten one pouch of the same food which was probably contaminated. But what makes me sick is wondering how many pouches of food she may have already eaten that I can't check now? So far she hasn't shown any of the symptoms, but I think I am going to take her to the vet anyways.

I was reading that Purina was also affected but don't see any links. I think Purina makes Friskies which my cats eat.

OK I am terrified. I see that I fed my dog some of the recalled food just today, she seems fine right now, but Elly can you tell us what to look for? I also had some cans that matched the upcs (one of the brands in the recall) but luckily hadn't given them to my dog yet.

Like any pet owner, I'm very worried about this recall as Menu Foods manufactured for so many. And was upset to read that after receiving reports that their food hurt animals, the company then conducted its own internal trial and fed the food to cats & dogs, some of them died:

...couldn't they have tested the food another way than that, say checking the food makeup in the chemistry lab?

My question was: How to read the product codes? Do all the numbers have to match? It seems the answer is, Yes, all the numbers have to match, so look to your cans to see if you have recalled cans.

I repeat the question so that people here who have been feeding their animals the food can look to the product codes and interpret them correctly, instead of freaking out.

Elly [and others], I wouldn't even take the chance. If I had cans/pouches manufactured by one of the companies listed, I would return them for a refund. Most larger pet stores are taking the cans/pouches back without recepts, "no questions asked".

Also, those manufacturers have been removed from my pet-food shopping list, even for kibble, until we are told what happened.

Thanks for the link, squirrelspur..I didn't read of any problem and had already read the menu link. It's an awful thing they did to test food that they suspected being deadly to test animals and allowing them to die. My cats eat primarily dry..Purina Naturals or ONE but they do like their "treat" of wet food in the morning which is 9lives tuna, friskies or Fancy feast. It's worrisome to have concerns you might be poisoning your pet. Man, I'll bet their lawyers are getting ready for battle.

The good news is that my dog that did have a meal from one of the confirmed cans recalled (all codes matching) is fine. She only gets the canned stuff stired in with the dry stuff to make it more enjoyable for her so she did not have much of it. I hope this is a good sign. Prayers to all.

We bought Nutro Natural Choice for our cats the day before the products were recalled. The UPN nos. match those on the recalled pouches list, but the expiry dates are different. Does that mean this food is OK?

I also contacted the store and the vet clinic here (owned by the same person) to alert them to the recall, the staff assured me (within 15 minutes!)that there aren't any pouches of the recalled product batches in the store. But I do know for sure that they carry the same-UPN-but-different-expiry-date pouches, so I'm wondering if this stock is good.

I can't get thru to the number listed on the webpage, and I'm not really sure if the clinic/store staff have taken this seriously, and I don't know what to do to get them to do it - 15 minutes certainly wasn't enough time to check ALL the pouches in stock!

I'm also wondering how to maximise awareness of the recall - not many people here in Dubai would've heard of it, I'm sure. If I hadn't signed up for this forum, I would've missed it too! Thank you, everyone!

I have a 15 tear old cat who already had kidney failure. She has been losing weight the last six months, so I get her to eat by feeding her only Fancy Feast canned. I'm glad fancy Feast is not on the list. It would kill me to know I was adding to her misery. My other, younger cat eats only Meow Mix dry food. I believe only wet foods are involved in this problem. I was in my local supermarket today and they had a sign that all Iams, Eucanuba and Mighty dog foods had been removed from the shelves.

There are literally going to hundreds or thousands of dead pets over this fiasco. One local lady lost two sweet dogs..one very young and the other a little older.They ate Ol' Roy bought at walmart.
