Female breast question

For the last month or so my left nipple has been itching like crazy. I have tried lotion and my eczema cream but neither work. It is driving me nuts!

I do not have children so I have never breast fed. I am 36 and in great health otherwise.

Anyone have any ideas as to what causes this or what I can do to stop the itching?

Michelle, there is probably a simple explanation and resolution, but itching of breast or nipple is reason to see your doctor.
At 36, I would assume you have a gyn...call today and describe your symptoms.

I agree, you need to have this checked out. In the meantime, check your bras. Have you been wearing a new one that might have rough threads or seams in the nipple area? have you changed your detergent?

Hmmm, I hate to say that I don't think so. A Rose-breasted Grosbeak has a stouter and paler bill; as thick as this bird's bill is, it just isn't convincing for a RBGR. A female RBGR has a very bold head pattern (but not a dark malar stripe, as this bird has) and also has white wing bars (this bird does not). This bird is pretty rufous in color; too much so for a RBGR. With all of that said, along with that long straight tail, I cannot rule out Song Sparrow here.

It's true, your body will adjust on the engorgement thing. If you pump, just do enough to take the edge off, don't empty them. If you empty them, it will take longer for your body to adjust. My breasts didn't go back to "normal" until I stopped breastfeeding. Even so, it is a new normal. At first, even though no longer enlarged, they were stretched and I thought they would look like old sweatsocks forever. But after a couple months, they looked a little closer to before baby, but not exactly. Sorry if that's a litte *too* much information. :o) You *will know* when your child is manipulating you. You know her needs better than any doctor, book, or well meaning relative. I don't think there is a set age when they figure it out, but it is a child's job in life to manipulate his/her parents. S ince they can't even manipulate their own bodies, I like to give them a little slack as babies. It's not always a bad thing, it's how they survive. You will know better than any outsider when it has crossed the line, then you can deal with it case by case. I found it easier to use the floor than the playpen. It was a lot easier for me to get down on her level that way. I saved the playpen for when she was mobile and needed a little containment for safety. Again, this is an area when you can see your child's needs, day by day, better than anyone else. If she is content, I wouldn't fix what isn't broken. She'll let you know when she needs a change of scenery.

Oh yes, be very careful with a cat in heat. The urges will drive her to do things she normally wouldn't and will attract bystanders who may take desperate actions. The other day someone was telling me a really amazing story of an indoor cat who went into heat and how she went to great lengths and very creatively managed to escape the house. My mother recently took in a PG stray and she is worried that the cat will go into heat before she can get her fixed. Her vet won't spay until mama has finished weaning her kittens (kittens are almost 6 weeks). The cat is secluded in a very secure area, but still... I wouldn't worry too much about her pain-wise. Just worry about keeping her in and worry about your own sanity- isn't she driving you nuts? I've never had a cat who went into heat but have always heard such awful stories about how obnoxious and unbearable they become. Your dog sounds like a real sweetie though.

Missy, tell your DD to look at the Gorsuch catalog online, it is a European catalog with jacket styles that are cut along the same lines and are gorgeous with slim trousers. It will def give her some recycling ideas! It takes a while for what's edgy in urban areas to become even acceptable in other regions. Keeping her choices fresh in terms of fabrics and length but not necessarily pushing the envelope on shoes / accessories is a good middle road for conservative work places or areas. She can always use some of the separates with fun heels in another setting. Whenever I see someone wearing a "stylish" outfit completely unsuited for her body type / age / coloring (like short, stubby legs in bootees) I am reminded again that style is about finding what looks good on oneself. The range of choices narrows so much as we age and the weight in our bodies is redistributed, it makes sense to have as much fun as possible with style when you are young! I guess the compensations of age are that we can afford better quality in terms of fabric and cut in our clothing.

Sorry, didn't mean to leave you hanging, it was just dry skin! A prescription of cream, a humidifier, and I am itch-free!

Whew, Michelle...I'm happy for your outcome. There's a lesser known form of inflammatory breast cancer where one early symptom is persistent itching.

I'm so pleased you just had a winter skin issue...:)

I'm pleased it was a winter skin issue too. Few people know about Inflammatory Breast Cancer. How did you know about it? When I was diagnosed with it, I was the only nurse in the area I worked (about 100 nurses) that had ever heard of it. In fact my GP, when I told him it was IBC diagnosed it as mastitis. He was amazed when he found out that I was right on with my diagnosis. Knowing about it probably helped save my life because I pushed for diagnosis. I would encourage all women to do a search on it and be aware of this type of breast cancer. It is rare, very aggressive and can hit people at a younger age than the normal breast cancer.

Heather, the subject of inflammatory breast cancer came up during a discussion with my endocrinologist one year. She is very firmly convinced that the more women know about their bodies, the more proactive they can be in taking charge of their own health. It was sort of along the lines of 'and another thing that many women haven't heard' type of topic...And I do pass this kind of information on to family and friends but that's a very small group compared to women nationwide.

She also believes very strongly in the importance of listening to your own inner sense, and not allowing yourself to ever be brushed off with your concerns by a doctor not taking a worry seriously. That when something is wrong, if you aren't burying it in the back of your mind somewhere, but paying attention to what your body is telling you, you can be treated sooner and more easily for many things, including cancer.

It sounds like that is just what you did, so you must fall into that group of very bright and informed women that my doctor would like us all to be. Please stay well!
