Female cat in heat questions

I have a 1 year old female cat who is now in heat, she is tormented and for some very strange reason she is fixated on our 75 lb pitbull. He is beyond patient and truly a saint as he just sits there and let's her rub all over him, etc.

Tonight (I wish I had my camera) oh my, she climbed on top of his head/back of his neck and was biting him and clinging on, straddled his head. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen. She was acting like a male cat would if he were trying to mount a female..she is so small that she literally was just straddled the back of his neck.

I need to get her fixed, I realize this. She is 100% an indoor cat. and only goes out with very close supervision.

What can be done for her during this rough time to ease her "pain"

I know nothing about cats...but I would say take her and get her fixed now. WHy wait.

Getting her spayed.

I would not underestimate the power of nature. My first cat, years back, went into heat days after we found her ...While waiting for an appointment (she got spayed ASAP), we had a stray tom rip through a screen, trying to get to her.

I see there is interest in this so I'll link to my animal communicator's website. The communicator, Gayle Nastazi, has always been very helpful to me. I have used her services with many of my cats in various situations; from dire emergencies (missing animal- found after 3 weeks!), to behavioral issues, to intergration and rescue issues with feral and abandonned cats that come into my care. I always learn something from every session. Although I know the whole idea strikes some people as pretty far-fetched (and that's OK), I feel comfortable saying that it has worked very effectively for me, and that I think it makes resolution of some difficult issues much easier. One thing I can say for certain is that Gayle is completely legitimate. I have met her in person. I also have no financial interest in this referral - just a hope that my suggestion might be useful. RE: Various Animal pee cleaners/destinkes - I think many (most?) employ some kind of enzyme. My conclusion after using all of them is that after the bottles are opened and partly used that it's possible that exposure to air in the emptying bottle degrades the enzyme significantly. It always seems to me that they work like gangbusters at first and then less so, particularly if not used up in a short time. Then I try another brand and it seems to work better (even tested side by side), but eventually poops out, too. I have tried Odor-X, Nature's Miracle and Get Serious, along with scads of others. The pattern seems to hold for all, so now I only buy in quarts not gallons, even though it's 'way cheaper in big jugs. I haven't experimented with decanting a gallon into smaller jars and keeping them closed until I've used up the other portions. Also I find it's helpful to vigorously shake the plastic bottle before applying. The idea mentioned by olychik about using rags is v. interesting and I will keep it mind. Is false heat in spayed cat possible?

I took her to the Vet and she said that she is fine and healthy, no false heat. Time for her shots anyway. She also said that the male cat probably is just curious and playful since he is younger. And that he probably likes her smell! But she doesn't like him back! They have a history of fighting, when he first arrived as a stray living outside,they fought often when she went outside. I had him neutered hoping he would settle down and he stayed outside for a long time but I finally started letting him in. I think she probably expects a fight when he is messing with her in any way. So she throws the first punch!

I took my cats in to the vet the day after I found them. I think the older cat was between one and one and a half years old when I found her. The other cat (her daughter?) was between six and ten months old. The vet looked for spay scars, did blood work to check for nasties, etc. I'm the one who mentioned my fears of pregnancy- vet felt around, noticed the enlarged teats but felt it could be from nursing the six month old (!), who made no attempts to nurse at all during this initial time I found the two. So, it's easy for this sort of thing to fly under the radar, especially if the vet is a dim-bulb, as mine was. My vet couldn't explain what the firm belly was about (these cats were otherwise very thin) and did take an x-ray, from which she determined the cat was not pregnant. To cut the vet a break, I imagine it was possible that the bones of the fetuses were not calcified enough to show up on an x-ray- it was a shock to find out she was pregnant two weeks later.

If you think a cat is going to help her and not make things worse then go ahead and get a cat. As far as male vs. female I would have to say its all up to you. You can look at it several different ways. Lets say you get a male cat I am not sure about your area but here you can't fix them until they are 6 months old. I myself just got a male cat him and the dog get along great it took a while but now you find them sleeping together on the dogs bed. But before he was 6 months old he was spraying in the house and there was nothing I could do about it. I didn't want to let him outside for fear he would be out tomin and never be back or be back in need of a trip to the vet. So I had to get more bleach and that get the cat smell out stuff. Female cats I guess are cleaner but if they come into heat early or you can't get them right to vet you have to deal with the loud near non stop meow they have. Then if she does get out she might come home and you will have deal with kittens in about 60 days. So its really all up to you. I wouldn;t go and see if you can find a adult cat. Don't get me wrong I think getting them from the pound is great but with a cat I always think what is wrong with the cat. Are they dirty, loud, rip the house up. Or it could just be the owners where moving and couldn't take the cat and they are the best cat ever. Its really like rolling dice you never know what you are going to get. I know you can find free kittens, just by driving around this time of year. Between my house and the center of town I think there are two or three signs.(apox 5 miles) Barn cats have a better knowledge of outside life but may come with alot of medical problems and are not litter trained. House rasied cats should be litter trained and may come with less health problems. So if you are looking for price vs. sex of the animal females cost more to fix then the males. But if I had to do it all over again. I think I would go with a female cat. But I have never been much of a cat person, I was a sucker and co workers had them and the condition they where in I could just leave him here. I am a sucker for a lost cause! Just my two cents.

Oh yes, be very careful with a cat in heat. The urges will drive her to do things she normally wouldn't and will attract bystanders who may take desperate actions. The other day someone was telling me a really amazing story of an indoor cat who went into heat and how she went to great lengths and very creatively managed to escape the house.

My mother recently took in a PG stray and she is worried that the cat will go into heat before she can get her fixed. Her vet won't spay until mama has finished weaning her kittens (kittens are almost 6 weeks). The cat is secluded in a very secure area, but still...

I wouldn't worry too much about her pain-wise. Just worry about keeping her in and worry about your own sanity- isn't she driving you nuts? I've never had a cat who went into heat but have always heard such awful stories about how obnoxious and unbearable they become.

Your dog sounds like a real sweetie though.

You want to ease her situation, take her to the vet and get her fixed ASAP.

By the way, that "rough time"? You are in for a very long wait if you are waiting for it to ease up. Cats are not like dogs - they don't go in and out of heat in a season. Once the female cat goes in heat, she pretty much stays their until either fixed or fertilized.

I've never had a cat who went into heat but have always heard such awful stories about how obnoxious and unbearable they become.

Just recently, I fostered a mom cat with babies. We were waiting for her to wean the babies off, so she could go into adoption/spayed.When the babies were about 8 weeks old, she went into heat.

Sweetest, neatest cat - and all of a sudden, she was peeing on kitchen counters (leaving her scent), crying a lot and loud, attacking my cats, and driving some of my male neutered cats nuts. It is frustrating both for the cat and for the owner.

Got spayed and back to normal sweet neat self.
