FWIW, we just moved into new construction, and have a LOT of Brazilian Cherry floors. With two dogs, a two year old, and the "punch-list" people in and out, it was getting very dirty very quickly. I tried water on a microfiber mop, and it was only ok. Finally called the store where we bought the wood (duh!). They (and other places I researched on the web) said not to use water for regular cleaning. They like the Bruce hardwood cleaner, or similar, with a microfiber mop. Having researched similar cleaners, I got the Bona today - and it's amazing how well it cleaned. The new microfiber mops are great, too - 8x15", so can cover more territory more quickly. The store said to only use the cleaner every week or two; in between, you can swiffer/microfiber mop/vacuum dry, and spot clean as needed. FWIW, the big microfiber mops are now at Lowe's and Home Depot - about $15 for a mop and one cover; about $5 for replacement covers. They're on wood poles, though - so may not be as nice as the aluminum ones. Be aware that the big ones are a little hard to use when using the cleaner though - so if that's an issue, get a smaller one. Emily

I've been a professional cleaner for 17 years (and still with most of my original clients!) and the absolute best and cheapest thing to clean with is a splash of clear or lemon (not sudsy) ammonia in warm water. Using just a splash in a bucket of water will not harm the floors--I have homes that have not have the floors redone in the time I've cleaned for them and they are still beautiful and unharmed. The key is to use very little water. For me, the best tool is a mop called the Sh-mop (lots of places sell them---you can google to find them). Rather than a sponge to wring out, you get removable terry cloth covers to use. I wring them out so they're just wet enough to pick up dirt and sticky spots, but not so wet that they leave the floor with any standing water. When one gets dirty, you put another one on the mop so you are never cleaning with dirty water. Plus, they save a lot of time because the cover much more surface than a regular mop. Our cleaning crew uses Bona on our engineered wood floor every two weeks. We live on the oceanfront in Hawai‘i and always assumed the white scum showing every footprint was due to salt in the air. Yesterday, my wife tried to clean it with Bona, and it looked worse! Today, I tried using a well-wrung out sponge mop with plain water and dried it with a bath towel. It looked slightly better, but had streaks. I then got down on my hands and knees and washed with plain water and a well wrung-out towel and dried with another towel. The floor looks beautiful and shiny again, it does not show footprints, and the bottoms of our feet aren't brown. BTW, my hands felt as if they had been in Elmer's glue when I finishted, and I am nursing sore knees. We'll never again use Bona on the floor!

I use water and vinegar too (distilled white) with microfiber cloths. No streaks, fresh smell, no need for drying if the cloths are wrung out really well. However...while that cleaning method works really well, I find that I have to clean the floors on my hands and knees. Yes! Oh, it's horrible! It's because our little dog is a slob, dribbling water all over. For some reason (his saliva??), the dried drops don't simply wipe off. It takes heavy pressure on the cloths, going over and over each drop until they disappear. I have the Bona cleaner but it's no more effective than water and vinegar. A mop just doesn't do it, unless I don't have the right one.
